Oh, I know, I know! A big, green cake!

This green thing wears glasses.

It's very, very close to me. So close I can touch it.

Just one more thing to do.

We're going to have a story.

-It might be about making a yummy cake.

-Or playing games.

Or singing funny songs.

Who's ready for a story?

Hmm...I was thinking maybe...a-ha! I know just the book!

-Is everyone settled down, ready to listen?

-Yes, Driver Dan.

-I'm ready too.

-And all of you? Sitting down comfy

-and ready to listen?

-ALL: Yes, Dan.

-This story is called Special Seeds.

It was written by Sarah Fabiny. The pictures are by Lauren Tobia.

One sunny morning,

Lemar came running up the path to his sister Letitia.

He was waving a big, bright envelope.

Nan had sent them a packet of seeds.

"What do you think might grow from them?" Lemar asked eagerly.

"Let's plant them and find out," said Leticia.

So, they fetched their spades, a rake and a watering can,

and found the perfect sunny spot in the garden.

They raked the ground, carefully scattered the seeds,

gently covered them with soil and then sprinkled them with water.

"It's so exciting," said Lamar.

"Maybe Nan's seeds will grow into a great big banana cake tree!"

And he licked his lips,

as he imagined eating Nan's delicious cake every day.

Yummy! A big banana cake tree!

"Or they might grow into a reading tree,"

said Leticia, hopping up and down with excitement,

as she pictured a tree that blossomed with books.

Nan was the best bedtime story reader ever.

I think you're the best story reader, Driver Dan.

Thank you, Sweetie.

"I've got it! It's going to be a pumpkin soup tree!" Lamar exclaimed.

He remembered how Nan's amazing soup always made them better

when they weren't feeling well.

Leticia spun a cartwheel, as she imagined the loveliest tree

she could think of, with long wrap-around branches.

"I think a tree that could give us hugs and kisses

"like Nan's would be the very best of all."

"You're right," said Lamar. "We'll just have to wait and see."

Oh-ho-ho-ho! I'd like a hugging tree.

The children watered Nan's special seeds every day.

First, green shoots appeared, then little by little,

the plants started stretching up to the sun.

They grew bigger and bigger and bigger, until one day,

when Lamar and Leticia went out to check the plants...

they had the most wonderful surprise!

Nan's special seeds had grown into something lovely

that they hadn't even thought of... a bed of beautiful flowers.

"Hooray!" Cheered Lamar.

"Now we've got the perfect way of saying thank you to Nan

"for all the wonderful things she does for us!"

"Yes," beamed Leticia. "And showing her how very much we love her!"

The End. Wasn't that a good story?

I loved the huggy, kissy trees!

Ho-ho! The cake tree was my favourite.

The flowers at the end looked so pretty.

I'm like a plant that's getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

We're stretching up to the sun.

Look at all the pretty flowers. ALL: Hooray!
