And I'm Rory. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:13
I'm here at a zoo in Bristol to see how the vets here | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
keep some royal reptiles fit and healthy. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19

Hello, I'm Chloe! | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
And this is my dog called Willow. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
She's a King Charles spaniel. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
And she is so cute! | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
We play lots and lots. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
I blow bubbles and she chases them. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
I love giving Willow cuddles. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
DING-DONG | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
-Hi, Chloe! -Hi, Ferne | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
-You must be Georgie. Hello! -Hi, Ferne. -Hi, Willow! | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
She's beautiful. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
Would you like to come in? | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
I'd love to! | 0:01:33 | 0:01:34
She's so lovely, look at this belly! | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
How old is Willow? | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
Six and a half. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
-So she's older than you are! -Mm. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
Is Willow like a furry big sister? | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
Yeah! | 0:01:50 | 0:01:51 | |
I heard you do something really special with Willow, don't you? | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
-Yeah, she goes to the doggy dentist. -That is amazing! | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
You take her to the vet's to get her teeth cleaned! | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
-Georgie, why do you take her to the vet's? -As she gets older, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
her teeth get harder to look after and really dirty, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
-so the vets keep on top of it. -Perfect! | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
So between Willow to the doggy dentist, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
-how else do you look after her teeth? -Come on, I'll show you. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
Come on, Willow! | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
Come on! | 0:02:18 | 0:02:19
Oh, what's in here? | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
Doggy toothbrush, and doggy toothpaste. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
Wow! And this is her special toothbrush? | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
-Yeah. -How do you use it? | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
Well, we put the toothbrush on our finger, you put the toothpaste on, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:38
and then we just brush Willow's teeth. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
-But we don't need to brush her teeth today, do we? -No. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
Cos we are going to the vet's. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
-Would you like to come, too? -I would love to! | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
Shall we go? Come on! | 0:02:50 | 0:02:51
Meet the vet! | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
This is Martin. | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
He's been a vet for over 20 years! | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
He once treated a lion with a sore tooth! | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
And helped an elephant | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
with an orange stuck in its throat. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
Come on, Willow! | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
Good girl. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
-Right, Willow, do you want to come through? -Come on! | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
-Hi, Georgie, hi, Ferne. -Hi. -Hi, Chloe. -Hi. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
-How are you? -Good. -Good! | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
Thank you, Martin. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:35
-Shall we get Willow up on the table? -Sure. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
Look at those teeth, Chloe! | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
-Whoa! -I know! | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
So, Martin, what's first? | 0:03:44 | 0:03:45
First thing we need to do is give her a good check over, | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
to make sure her heart, lungs, and belly are all good, | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
-and that there's no problems. Has she been well? -Yeah. -Yeah. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:56
-She like her food? -Yeah. -Yeah, she does! | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
So we're going to have a little listen to her heart. OK? | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
-Oh, this'll be nice. Do you want to listen? -Yeah? | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
-Can you hear it? -Here we go. Pop those in your ears. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
-Tell me, what can you hear? -SLOW BUMPING | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
-Like, bump, bump, bump... -That's right. -Bump, bump... | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
Do you think it sounds good? | 0:04:14 | 0:04:15
-Yeah. -Yeah, good. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
Also, when I listen to her heart, | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
I also listen to her breathing, to her lungs, so her lungs are good. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
What next, before her teeth? | 0:04:23 | 0:04:24
We'll give her a little medicine to make her a bit sleepy. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
That medicine's called anaesthetic. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
-But we don't go to sleep when our teeth are going to get cleaned. -No. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
So why is she? | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
Because she won't sit still nicely for me, | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
so we're going to make her just a little bit sleepy | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
and then I can clean all the way round her teeth. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
When you go to the dentist, you lie there and go "ahh". | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
Do you think Willow would do that? | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
No! She would be like... | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
Yeah, that's right. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:53
So if she's a bit sleepy, I can open her mouth and I can do it. OK. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
Sounds good, doesn't it? | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
Shall I keep Willow company | 0:04:59 | 0:05:00
-while she gets her anaesthetic and her teeth cleaned? -Yeah. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:04
-That would be lovely. -See you later, Willow. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
Let me explain. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:11
Anaesthetics are a group of medicines | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
that make animals comfortable for operations, procedures or tests. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
Some anaesthetic will numb an area of the body, | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
so the patient doesn't feel what's happening. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
And sometimes it makes the patient fall into a really deep sleep. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:30
BOING! BOING! BOING! | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
While Chloe and her mum wait outside, | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
vet Martin gets Willow ready for her anaesthetic. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
Come on, Willow. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:43
OK, sweetheart, little scratch. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
That's all. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
Well done, Willow. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
OK? | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51 | |
Willow gets a small injection of liquid anaesthetic first. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
And she's being the perfect patient. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
Next, Willow gets more anaesthetic as a gas | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
through a tube in her mouth. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03
Willow can't feel any pain at all. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
She's fast asleep. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:08
There we go, Willow. Things are going well. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
And now, vet Martin is able to start having a good look at her teeth, | 0:06:14 | 0:06:19
and then he can start cleaning them. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
This is suction, just like we get in the dentists. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
Wow, you can see a difference already! | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
Are you just getting rid of all of the plaque and the build-up? | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
-Yes, you can see it coming off. -Yes! | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
-Pearly white teeth in a minute. -Yes! | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
Are her teeth good for a six-and- a-half-year-old King Charles? | 0:06:42 | 0:06:47
They are good, but they're good because she comes in once a year | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
and has a good clean up. And then I polish them. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
So polishing teeth kind of smooths them over, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
-kind of puts a protective layer over them as well? -Kind of, yeah. | 0:06:56 | 0:07:00
So when they polish your teeth, it's not just to make you look good. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:04
It also has a proper function. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
Brushing at home is really important for dogs. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:10
-Should you brush your dog's teeth twice a day? -Once a day's fine. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
As long as you can do it four times a week that's... | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
a good idea. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
Martin cleans and polishes all the teeth in Willow's mouth. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
So, Martin, how did Willow do? | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
She did great. She's had enough anaesthetic, | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
-that should feel quite comfortable when she wakes up. -OK. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:34
-So shall we leave her to wake up? -Yes. -There we are! | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
-Hey, Willow. -Hi, Willow. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
Oh, hello! Coming to say hello. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:46
-How are you feeling? -She did so well, didn't she? | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
Oh, she did really, really well. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
She's a little bit sleepy still, | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
so if we just give her a little longer, she should be great. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
Perfect. How about while Willow wakes up, | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
we see what else has been happening at the vet's today? | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
Willow isn't the only dog at the vet's today. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
I'm Karen, and you're Eva, | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
and this is Brian. He's 18 months old. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
He's at the vets today because he cut himself on wire, | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
and he's had his stitches in his leg, | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
so he's come to have them looked at today. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
And Lizzie the cat has been brought in by her owner, Sharon. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
Martin gives Lizzie a full check over, and her vaccinations. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:40
It's been a busy day for Martin and his team. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
Look who we have! | 0:08:49 | 0:08:50
Willow! Willow! | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
Still a little bit sleepy, but hi! | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
Good girl. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
Thank you, Martin. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
-Thank you very much, Martin. -No problem. -Bye! -Cheers, bye! | 0:09:00 | 0:09:04
Chloe and Georgie, I've had such a wonderful time meeting you, | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
and Willow did so well in her procedure, it was great to see. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:11
But I'd love to come and visit when she's back to her bouncing self, | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
-would that be OK? -Yes. -Thank you very much. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
Let's see what Rory's been up to today. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
Vet's go! | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
TOOT-TOOT! | 0:09:28 | 0:09:29
This zoo has lots of different animals. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
They all receive care and attention from a team of resident vets, | 0:09:33 | 0:09:37
and I'm going to meet one of them now. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
This way. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:42
-Hi, Charlotte, hi, Kelly. -Hi, Rory. -Hi, Rory. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
Today, you guys are going to be doing a check-up | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
-on a royal resident. -That's right, | 0:09:50 | 0:09:52
today we're doing a check-up on Taylor. Taylor is a royal python. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:56
Wow! That looks a look like a pillowcase to me. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
Yes, Taylor's travelling in a pillowcase today, | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
-to make sure she doesn't get damaged. -OK. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:04
-So here she is. -She is beautiful! | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
Royal pythons are also known as ball pythons, | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
and they are found in parts of Africa. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
They're called royal pythons because it's thought | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
that African kings used to wear them as giant, living necklaces, | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
a long time ago. Can you imagine that? | 0:10:20 | 0:10:22
So first of all we're going to check that she's moving around OK, | 0:10:22 | 0:10:26
and that she is nice and strong. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
So when I hold her, I can feel her coils are nice and strong | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
-and she's nice and muscular. She's moving forward nicely. -Yeah. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:36
-Next, we check her body condition. -OK. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
We want to make sure she's not too fat or too thin | 0:10:38 | 0:10:41
and you do that by running your fingers along the muscles | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44
either side of the spine. She seems in good condition to me. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:48
She looks absolutely gorgeous. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:50
-Next, I want to look in her mouth. -How do you do that with a snake?! | 0:10:50 | 0:10:54
I'm just going to gently open her mouth with this wooden stick. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:58
-So you can see in there it's a nice pale pink colour. -Very pale pink. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:02
So that all looks healthy to me. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:04
And you can see that she's flicking her tongue in and out. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
-Tasting the air. -Yes, that's right. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
So you and I see the world with our eyes, | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
and we use our other senses like smell and hearing as well, | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
and snakes are similar, but they smell with their tongue as well. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
-Next thing I'm going to do is get a heart rate. -Oh, wow! | 0:11:20 | 0:11:24
-The heart in snakes is about a third of the way down. -OK. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
MACHINE CRACKLES | 0:11:27 | 0:11:28
BUMP-BUMP | 0:11:28 | 0:11:30
BUMP-BUMP | 0:11:31 | 0:11:32
-That's incredibly slow! So is that quite normal? -Yeah. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:38
Snakes and other reptiles do have very slow heart rates. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:41
We'll pop her back in her pillowcase and take her to the X-ray machine. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:45
OK. An X-ray is like a photograph of the inside of your body. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:49
-So we'll see her skeleton? -That's right. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
-We'll see her skeleton and maybe some of her organs as well. -Amazing. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:56
Charlotte and Kelly stand behind the screen to take the X-ray, | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
and moments later, I get to see the results. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:02
Wow! | 0:12:02 | 0:12:03 | |
So on here you can see Taylor's skull, | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
and then the spine, with all the ribs coming off... | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
-All the way down. -..all the way down. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
-Amazing, aren't they, snakes? -Absolutely incredible creatures. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:15
Well, she has been really brave. Is there anything else? | 0:12:15 | 0:12:19
No, that's her check-up complete. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
-She's done really well. -Yes, you've been marvellous. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
Thank you very much for letting us come and see it all! | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
Not long ago I met Chloe, her mum Georgie, | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
and their lovely dog Willow, who had to get her teeth cleaned. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
And now I'm back to see how they're getting on back home. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
-Hi, Chloe, hi, Georgie. -Hi, Ferne! -Hi, Ferne! -Hi! Hello, Willow! | 0:12:44 | 0:12:49
-Oh, she looks great! How's she getting on, Chloe? -Good. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
-Does she still have her nice, white, shiny teeth? -Sparkly clean. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
-Perfect! And has she been playing lots? -She's been playing loads. | 0:12:56 | 0:13:01
Good girl, Willow. She's been so good. Shall we play with her now? | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
-Yeah! -That would be fun. Come on! | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
Come on! | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
GIGGLING | 0:13:11 | 0:13:13
So fast! | 0:13:16 | 0:13:18
