ALL: Hello! | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
-I'm Zoe. -I'm Ned. -And I'm Florie. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
Today we are at an animal rescue centre which is near our school. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:56
This is the place where animals are looked after | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00
and are hopefully given new homes. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
There's ponies, donkeys, rabbits, cats, and even farm animals. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:10
And we're here to see their goose Clementine. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
She's very cute. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
-Hi, Florie. Hi, Zoe. Hi, Ned. KIDS: -Hello, Ferne! | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
-Hi, Neil! -Hi, Ferne! | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
Neil is one of the carers here at the rescue centre. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
This place is fantastic. There are so many animals, aren't there? | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
-KIDS: -Yes. -But we're going to see one special animal. Who's that? | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
-Yeah, we're going to see Clementine the goose. -Should we go see her? | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
-KIDS: -Yeah. -Come on. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
CHICKENS CLUCK | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
GOOSE HONKS | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
Hello, Clementine. Hello. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
She is beautiful. What type of goose is she? | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
-Emden goose. -She's an Emden goose? | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
Wow, and I love her blue eyes. Ned, do you know how old Clementine is? | 0:02:05 | 0:02:10
-Five years old. -That's quite young, isn't it? | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
How long do geese live for, Neil? | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
-They can live up to about 18 years. -Wow. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
Can you guys see anything special about Clementine's feet? | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
-Clementine has webbed feet. -Yeah, that's right. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
And why do you think webbed feet are good? | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
-KIDS: -Because they're helpful for swimming. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
Does Clementine like swimming, Neil? | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
She loves swimming, especially in her big pond over there. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
I can see that she's limping, her right foot here is swollen. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
Yeah, she suffers from arthritis, we like to try and keep an eye on it | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
so we're hopefully going to get her to see the vet later on | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
-and see if we can get it sorted out. -Oh, I hope so. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
So shall we go meet Ian the vet? And, Neil, you can bring Clementine? | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
-Absolutely. -Come on, guys. Let's go. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
This is vet Ian. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
He is originally from the country Australia, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
where he used to care for kangaroos. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
And he once helped a camel with a sore tummy. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
-Hiya, Ian. Hi, Natasha. -Hey, Ferne. Hey, guys. -Hello. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
Ian is one of the vets who works at the centre. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
Natasha is a veterinary nurse who is helping out. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
Where do we start with Clementine? | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
We'll give her a check over and have a look at her sore foot. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
-Great. -So we start at her head, and just check her beak and her eyes, | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
make sure they're nice and bright. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
Do you think she looks bright and alert? | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
-Or does she look sleepy and tired? -KIDS: -Bright and alert. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:53
She does look bright, doesn't she? She looks quite happy and bright - | 0:03:53 | 0:03:57
she's been eating her breakfast really well. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
It's good to check her general condition, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
so make sure she's not too skinny. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
How can you tell cos they're covered in feathers? | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
You can feel, it's called the keel bone, | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
and it's just in there, in their chest region down here. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
And the keel bone, it should be nice and round. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
It shouldn't be sticking up and pointy, | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
and so you can feel for that. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
So if you want to have a feel, you can | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
just gently rub your hands in here, and then you can just reach here. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
Can you feel there's a little ridge? | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
What does it feel like, Ned? | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
Is it nice and round or is it really pointing out? What do you think? | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
-It feels a bit pointy. -A little bit pointy? | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
Yeah. It's not too bad. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
But do you know what? You're probably right, and that probably | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
says to us, maybe she's not as fat and happy as she could be. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
And can you guys think of a reason why | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
she might not be feeling that happy at the moment? | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
-She has a sore foot. -That's exactly right. -Bingo. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
I think you might be right. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
She damaged an ankle of hers earlier in the year. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
She's been left with this swelling, and she now has | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
anti-inflammatories once a day, which helps, | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
but just recently, she's become quite sore on that ankle again. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
So an anti-inflammatory is kind of like medicine that you | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
-put in her food and it helps with the swelling, doesn't it? -Exactly. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
-With swelling and soreness. Yeah. -OK. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
So we need to look a little bit further at this foot, | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
and see if we can do anything for her. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
When a wound or injury swells up, turns red and hurts, | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
it's often a sign of inflammation. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
Inflammation is the body's way of sending the right healing cells | 0:05:31 | 0:05:36
to an injured part of the body. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
Arthritis is one possible cause of inflammation. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
It occurs when joints like your knees and ankles | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
become sore and stiff. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:47
Inflammation is the body's way of telling us something is wrong. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:52
-OK, I'll come round and have a look at this foot. -Great. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
-Switch around. -What are you checking for? | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59
So I'm just checking for heat. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
It's important always to compare one foot to the other. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
-I'm checking it for heat. -What does it mean if it's hot? | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
If it's hot, it could meet it's inflamed, | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
which could be infection or it could be secondary to arthritis. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:14
It can give you clues as to what could be wrong. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
Are you trying to see if she's got an infection | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
-or arthritis that's making it swell? -Any clues, yeah. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
It's no hotter than the other foot, | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
-but you can see she doesn't like playing around with this foot. -Yeah. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:30
These toes...certainly the central one is very stiff. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
And then I'll gently just check her...her tendons. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:38
She doesn't seem to mind that, does she? | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
How do you think she's doing, you guys? Is she being brave? | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
-KIDS: -Yeah. -Yeah? She's being very good. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
It doesn't look like it's sore for her when you touch it. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
No, it's not super sore, but again, I'm not going to squeeze too | 0:06:50 | 0:06:54
hard because we know that it is sore | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
as she is limping on the leg more than previously. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
It's hard to tell why her foot is swollen. What's next? | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
I'm going to take her to the surgery this afternoon | 0:07:03 | 0:07:07
and we'll do an X-ray to have a look | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
and see what's going on inside that foot. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
An X-ray is a photograph that lets vets see the bones inside an animal. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:17
Vet Ian has to take Clementine back to his surgery, | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
where he has the special camera that can take the X-ray | 0:07:20 | 0:07:24
and later on, we'll get to see the photographs. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
While Clementine gets a much-needed X-ray, | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
let's see who else Ian checked on today. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
CLEMENTINE YIPS | 0:07:33 | 0:07:34
-Yip yip yip! -Yip yip. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
Vet Ian had a busy day seeing lots of animals | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
that were at the rescue centre. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
There were loads of rabbits to check on. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
One called Flash hurt his back very badly, but he is now up | 0:07:51 | 0:07:55
and moving around again. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
He's clean, he's bright, it's amazing. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
Pumpkin the guinea pig had also hurt his back, and he had his teeth | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
knocked out, but they are all grown back now and he is doing well. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:10
And this sparrowhawk was found with a broken wing. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
It will need an operation to help fix it. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
What an amazing job the team at the rescue centre and vet Ian do. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:23
CLEMENTINE HONKS | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
We've got Clementine's X-ray here. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
This is where Ian saw more swelling on the foot. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
This is because she's got arthritis. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
But Ian will give her medicine to help with the pain | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
and make her comfortable. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
-Isn't that good? KIDS: -Yeah! | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
Yeah, well done, Clementine. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
I've had such a wonderful time meeting you and gorgeous Clementine. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
Would it be all right if I came back soon to see how you're getting on? | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
-KIDS: -Yeah! -Thank you very much. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
Let's see what Rory's been up to. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
CAR HORN HONKS | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
RORY: At this wildlife park in the Highlands of Scotland, | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
lots of different animals are cared for by a team of vets and keepers. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:14
Today, vet Jane and keeper Morag are introducing me | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
to an animal with some very impressive horns. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
-Hi, Jane, Hi, Morag. BOTH: -Hi, Rory. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
-Who lives here? -We have markhor in here. Three boys. -Brilliant. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:34
Turkmenian markhor are a type of large goat found in central Asia. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:38
They've got relatively short legs, broad hooves, | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
and an impressive mane. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
The coolest thing about them are the big curly horns on their head - | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
both males and females have them. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
Is there a particular animal you want to look at today? | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
Today we'll look at Yoakum - the largest, oldest male we have here. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:56
He gets overgrown feet, so he's due a hoof trim. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
They're big animals, how do you get close enough to work on them? | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
We have to use a tranquillizer, to put him in a deep sleep | 0:10:02 | 0:10:06
so we can go in and handle him and he won't get stressed. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
-Shall we get to work? -Yes. -Yeah. -Cool. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
Yoakum has been given a red dart with a tranquillizer in it | 0:10:14 | 0:10:18
to make him sleepy. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:19
Once he's asleep, Jane and Morag cover his eyes | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
with a jumper to keep him calm so they can treat him. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:26
OK, so Yoakum is lying here. What do you want to do first? | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
First we want to check he's asleep enough | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
and he's OK and there's not a problem with the anaesthetic. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:36
We'll put some cotton wool in his ears | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
and try and keep the noise down so we don't wake him. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
-Then we'll listen to his heart. -OK. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
HEART BEATS | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
-OK. -All sounding good? -Yeah, that also looks good. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
I'm happy he's nice and asleep, and we can go and do his foot trim. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
So these are some pretty big clippers you've got here. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:57
Those are some tough hooves to get through? | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
They can be for the big nails - we have to trim off quite a lot. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
Obviously this isn't painful cos he's asleep | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
but when they wake up, there's no pain? | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
No, it's like trimming your toenails. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
-He has no feeling in that at all. -How often do you have to do this? | 0:11:11 | 0:11:15
We have to do these guys about every three months, but in their | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
natural environment, they'd live in a very rocky, hard area. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:22
They'd naturally wear away by rubbing on the rocks. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:24
Yes. It can cause problems and infections if they're too long - | 0:11:24 | 0:11:28
-the hoof splits. -Right, OK. Looks good. -OK. The other one. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:32
And, Jane, do you take the opportunity of the animal | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
being in a deep sleep to check anything else while you're here? | 0:11:35 | 0:11:39
We'll do a health check because it's often the only opportunity we get. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:43
One left. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:44
We'll then put some antibiotic spray on his feet, | 0:11:46 | 0:11:49
which will give him blue feet for the rest of the day. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
The spray is just to stop any bugs getting in? | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
Yeah, that's just... | 0:11:55 | 0:11:56
helps any infection. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
Once the tranquillizer wears off, Yoakum wakes up | 0:11:58 | 0:12:00
and is back on his freshly trimmed hooves. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:04
You're both happy with how Yoakum's doing? | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
Yep, happy. He's sleepy, but he's woken up nicely. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
Feet look good. He'll snooze this afternoon. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
He's been a very well-behaved boy. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
Thank you for letting me see such a cool procedure. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
-Thank you. -Thank you. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:20
Not long ago, I met Ned, Florie, and Zoe, and they introduced me to | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
Clementine the goose, who had a sore foot. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
Now I'm back to see how they're getting on. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
GOAT BLEATS | 0:12:34 | 0:12:35
-Hi, guys. KIDS: -Hi, Ferne! | 0:12:45 | 0:12:47
Are you giving these lovely ducks and chickens | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
and geese some more straw? | 0:12:50 | 0:12:52
-KIDS: -Yeah. -Oh, fantastic job. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:54
-How's Clementine's foot? NED: -Good. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:56
-Yeah. -Yeah. -Is she doing better? KIDS: -Yeah. | 0:12:56 | 0:13:00
Her foot is still swollen, but her new medicine must be working | 0:13:00 | 0:13:04
as she's having a lovely time swimming in that pond. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
It's fantastic that Clementine is doing so much better. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:11
Thank you for joining us, | 0:13:11 | 0:13:12
I hope you had fun finding out all about this beautiful goose. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:17
-FLORIE: -Well done, Clementine. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
