You're going to have an X-ray today.

I know. It's on our calendar at home. X-ray day.

But, oh, puddles! I don't know what it is.

Well, we're going to use an X-ray to look inside your chest and lungs.

Wow!

-How does an X-ray work, Dr Ranj?

-That's a tricky question, Ruz.

An X-ray machine makes x-rays which pass through your body to help

-make a special kind of picture.

-That's clever.

-Like a photo?

-Yes, but, in an X-ray the picture is black and white.

The soft parts inside the body, like your lungs,

show up as dark areas.

But your bones will show up as white, like this.

Wow!

I've always wondered what my lungs looked like.

-What's up, Ruz?

-Dr Ranj?

-Yes?

What are lungs?

Well, your lungs are very important.

-They help you to breathe in and out.

-So I can play the recorder?

Er, yes, but they are even more clever than that.

When you breathe in, your lungs take in something from the air,

called oxygen.

Oxygen?

And when you breathe out,

they help to get rid of something from your body called carbon dioxide.

Carbon dioxide.

That's it. See, your lungs do a really important job

keeping your body healthy.

We need to make sure your lungs are healthy and working properly.

-Can we do the X-ray now?

-OK, if you're ready.

I was born ready, Dr Ranj.

First, I need you to stand in front of this screen.

Is this going to hurt, Dr Ranj?

No, Ruz, you won't feel anything at all.

This is my favourite T-shirt, Dr Ranj, do I need to take it off?

Don't worry, it won't do anything to your T-shirt, but

you have to take it off so we get a clear picture.

Oh!

OK!

Now, I'm just going to line up the X-ray in the correct place to

-get the best picture possible of your lungs.

-OK.

All you need to do is stand very still

while I check it's lined up and ready.

-I'm keeping very still, Dr Ranj.

-Great!

So, if you're comfortable, I'm going to go behind that screen.

Dr Ranj, when you play hide and seek,

you're not supposed to tell me where you're going to hide!

We're not playing hide and seek.

I need to go behind the screen, it's a special screen which blocks x-rays.

-Why?

-Because I work in the hospital, I come into the X-ray room a lot,

being close to x-rays every day wouldn't be good for me.

What about me? Why don't I have to go behind the screen?

Don't worry, having an X-ray now and again is fine.

It won't do you any harm at all.

-Shall we do it now?

-Still ready, Dr Ranj.

OK, I just need you to take a big breath in,

-and hold it for a moment, can you do that?

-Yes.

HE BREATHES IN Very good.

And hold it.

And breathe out. HE BREATHES OUT LOUDLY

Phew!

-Now what do I do?

-That's it, Ruz, all done.

-Really?

-Yes! Would you like to see the picture of your lungs?

Here's the X-ray picture we took of your lungs, inside your chest.

Wow! My lungs are all stripy.

Those stripes are your ribs, Ruz. And in the middle, that is your heart.

Wow!

What are ribs?

Your ribs are like a cage of strong bone which protects your heart

and your lungs.

-You have 12 pairs of ribs.

-Wow!

Your lungs are the darker shapes behind your ribs,

-and on this picture, I think they look very healthy too.

-Great!

So with healthy lungs, you should have plenty of puff

-to play the recorder.

-I'd better get practising then.
