Well, Kiwa, we come to hospital to have operations

-for lots of different reasons.

We might have an operation to mend a part of our body

-that isn't working properly.

-Oh, yeah, like my auntie.

She fell off her bike and had to have an operation on her knee.

Or we might have an operation to remove something

from inside our bodies that's making us unwell.

So, why am I having an operation today?

Well, you have something on your skin that's giving you problems.

Yeah, it's a flappy lump on my cheek,

and if it gets scratched or snagged, it bleeds an awful lot.

That flappy lump is an extra bit of skin. It's called a skin tag.

Skin tag?

Skin tags are usually harmless, but because yours gets snagged

and bleeds, it's best to have it removed.

-Will it hurt?

-No. Don't worry, Kira, it won't hurt.

-Good. Phew.

Is something else worrying you, Kiwa?

Well, I'm just so hungry, Dr Ranj.

-I haven't had any breakfast, and I woke up really early.

-Sorry, Kiwa.

For a few hours before an operation,

it's important that you don't eat or drink.

-Oh. Can't I even just have one little grape?

-Sorry, no.

But you'll be able to eat what you like after your operation.

Well, it's almost time for your operation, Kiwa,

Most operations are done by a hospital doctor called a surgeon.

A surgeon.

A surgeon is trained to mend your body using special instruments.

No, not musical instruments, Kiwa, hospital instruments.

Very clever tools that a surgeon uses to mend your body.

Is the surgeon coming here to do my operation, Dr Ranj?

No, Kiwa. Your operation will be done in theatre.

Oh! Theatre! Then I shall need a fancy costume.

And today I am having an operation.

In hospital, operations are done in a room we call an operating theatre.

You mean there's no stage or coloured lights?

Only special bright lights

-so the surgeon can see everything very clearly.

-And no fancy costumes?

Just the gown that you're wearing.

Everyone who has an operation wears a gown like that.

Oh. OK.

So, are you ready for your operation now, Kiwa?

I think so. But I'll have to get into my wheelchair first.

-No need, Kiwa.

-Hmm?

Your hospital bed has got wheels,

so you get to ride in it while I push you along.

Anaesthetic is a special medicine that makes you go to sleep.

Oh. Am I going to have some sleepy medicine, Dr Ranj?

Yes, Kiwa, and then the surgeon will remove your skin tag

-while you're asleep.

-So, I won't even know when it's done?

This sleepy medicine is a gas,

so all you have to do is breathe normally, using this.

Do I have to put it over my face?

Don't worry, it's quite comfortable.

Maybe. Some patients do have fun dreams,
