Hello, there! It's good to see you, isn't it, Skipper?

0:01:020:01:06

Hello! I was just looking at something interesting.

0:01:060:01:09

What is it?

0:01:090:01:10

I'll show you in a minute. Come inside, we're all ready.

0:01:100:01:15

Come on, Skipper.

0:01:150:01:17

ALL: Hello!

0:01:180:01:20

Welcome to the Green Balloon Club.

0:01:200:01:23

There's a really nice smell in here.

0:01:240:01:27

You're right! It smells, sort of...

0:01:270:01:30

..perfumey!

0:01:300:01:33

Is it you, Cat?

0:01:340:01:36

No, I'm not wearing perfume.

0:01:360:01:38

Is it you, then, Skipper?

0:01:390:01:41

Dogs don't wear perfume!

0:01:410:01:43

LAUGHTER

0:01:430:01:46

Is it you, Jay?

0:01:460:01:47

I don't wear perfume! What about Sky?

0:01:470:01:50

Oh! It's not me.

0:01:500:01:51

Then it's got to be you, Lily-Rose.

0:01:510:01:54

I'm not wearing perfume.

0:01:540:01:56

Then what is the smell?

0:01:560:01:58

-It's my Hyacinth.

-Aah!

-It's got a flower now.

0:01:580:02:02

-Mmm! It smells really nice!

-It's filling up the whole balloon.

0:02:020:02:06

-It's fantastic, Lily-Rose, thanks for bringing it in today.

-Sky!

0:02:060:02:11

-Should we do the register now?

-I almost forgot about that.

0:02:110:02:15

-Would you and Skipper like to do it today?

-Yes, please. Skipper,

0:02:150:02:20

-is Lily-Rose here?

-Skipper!

0:02:200:02:22

Sit! Paw...good girl!

0:02:220:02:27

Good girl, Skipper, Lily-Rose is here. Skipper, is Ant here?

0:02:270:02:32

-Paw...good girl! I'm here, Skipper.

-Ant's here.

0:02:320:02:37

Now it's us. Skipper!

0:02:370:02:40

Sit! Paw...good girl!

0:02:400:02:45

Right, we're here. You're so clever! And now it's you, Jay.

0:02:450:02:50

Skipper! Come on!

0:02:500:02:53

Sit! Paw...good girl!

0:02:530:02:56

Jay's here. And now it's Sky.

0:02:560:02:59

Skipper! Skipper!

0:02:590:03:03

Sit!

0:03:030:03:05

Paw...oh, good girl, Skipper, I'm here.

0:03:050:03:09

Sky's here. Skipper, Skipper, come!

0:03:090:03:14

Good girl, Skipper. Now it's you. If you're here, wave to Skipper.

0:03:160:03:21

Good girl, Skipper.

0:03:270:03:29

That's everyone present and correct.

0:03:290:03:32

ALL: Shall we do the Green Balloon Club Chant? Yes!!

0:03:320:03:36

DRUM BEAT

0:03:360:03:40

# We love animals, plants and birds

0:03:410:03:44

# We love snails and slugs

0:03:440:03:47

# Large and small we love them all

0:03:470:03:49

# And we never ever step on bugs

0:03:490:03:51

# Cos we are the Green Balloon Club.#

0:03:510:03:56

Lily-Rose, you should draw a picture of your hyacinth for the scrapbook.

0:03:560:04:00

I will. I wish I could put the smell in it.

0:04:000:04:03

-I've found something to draw for the scrapbook.

-What is it?

0:04:030:04:07

It's a ladybird. It's the first one I've seen all year.

0:04:070:04:11

They must be starting to come out of hibernation.

0:04:110:04:15

TRUMPET BURST

0:04:150:04:17

It looks like we've got a report coming in.

0:04:170:04:19

There's the Green Balloon! Hello!

0:04:190:04:24

Oh, yes! It's Melika, Centine, and Zara. Hello, down there!

0:04:240:04:29

-ALL: Hello!

-It's the time of year when there are blossoms on the tree.

0:04:290:04:34

-And the first leaves start to bud.

-Come and see!

0:04:340:04:38

By looking at the shape of the buds, we can work out what trees they are.

0:04:410:04:47

-What's this tree?

-Look at the buds.

0:04:470:04:51

-Blackthorn?

-No.

0:04:510:04:54

-Beech?

-No.

0:04:540:04:55

It's tricky to work out which tree it is.

0:04:550:04:59

There's two growing at each side. By-two, by-two, by-two!

0:04:590:05:03

And there's one in the middle, at the top.

0:05:030:05:06

-So this one is a sycamore.

-Let's go and find some more trees.

0:05:060:05:11

This one has got red and green.

0:05:150:05:17

-And it looks like it snows on the green.

-And it has "sprouches",

0:05:170:05:22

and there's only one on it, not two.

0:05:220:05:25

-So this one is a...

-Crab apple!

0:05:250:05:30

Let's go to the next one.

0:05:300:05:33

-This is kinda spiky.

-It's like a blossom.

0:05:380:05:43

And it has...these are white and the buds are round.

0:05:430:05:47

All in favour?

0:05:470:05:49

We think it's blackthorn.

0:05:490:05:52

Yeah? Is that lavender?

0:05:570:05:59

The little bud is white and fluffy, so it must be the same as this one.

0:05:590:06:06

TOGETHER: It's an elder tree!

0:06:060:06:08

Hey! These have got green bobs on them.

0:06:150:06:19

OK, this one looks like there's lots of leaves, some covering each other.

0:06:190:06:26

They're green, and spiking out.

0:06:260:06:29

It could be common hawthorn.

0:06:290:06:32

Why don't you see which trees you can find where you live?

0:06:320:06:39

ALL: Bye!

0:06:400:06:42

ALL: Bye!

0:06:420:06:43

ALL: Bye!

0:06:430:06:44

Bye! Thanks for showing us those!

0:06:440:06:49

Sky, do you know anything about seeds?

0:06:490:06:52

Oh, well, a little bit. What do you want to know?

0:06:520:06:55

-Well, my fruit seed experiment isn't growing.

-Right, OK.

0:06:550:07:02

How come some of them have pictures on the front and some don't?

0:07:020:07:06

-I left them out in the rain.

-That's probably the reason

0:07:060:07:10

why they haven't come out yet. They probably stayed in the soil

0:07:100:07:14

to keep nice and warm because it's been really cold recently.

0:07:140:07:18

Now it's spring we'll put them outside so they can grow.

0:07:180:07:22

-I'll look in the balloon to see if we can find some seeds.

-Thanks!

0:07:220:07:27

Special Report!

0:07:270:07:29

Hello, Jelly! I'm going to plant some seeds. What are you doing?

0:07:290:07:33

This is Special Reporter, Jelly,

0:07:400:07:42

reporting for the Green Balloon Club. And I'm here,

0:07:420:07:46

in the kitchen garden, at Chiswick House.

0:07:460:07:49

And I've come to help some friends do some gardening, so I'd better go!

0:07:490:07:54

I've got a wheelbarrow, I'd better go and catch up with my friends.

0:07:570:08:02

This is the kitchen garden, but you don't grow things here

0:08:020:08:06

you need for the kitchen, like the kitchen sink and pots and pans. No!

0:08:060:08:11

-This is our team of gardeners, aren't we, people?

-Yes!

0:08:150:08:19

This is Karen, and she's going to help us, aren't you?

0:08:190:08:23

-Yes, hello, Jelly.

-Hello. Are you ready to do some planting?

0:08:230:08:27

-Yeah!

-Come on, let's go!

0:08:270:08:29

That's good, keep going.

0:08:310:08:33

This is where we're going to do our planting.

0:08:330:08:37

First we have to dig a hole because we're going to plant

0:08:370:08:40

-something in it, but what are we going to plant?

-Potatoes.

0:08:400:08:44

Oh! T-t-tobatoes?

0:08:440:08:46

ALL: Potatoes!

0:08:460:08:48

Yes, we're going to plant tobatoes!

0:08:480:08:51

-Hi, Jelly.

-Have you got the tobato seed?

-Yeah.

0:08:510:08:54

We've got such a fantastic hole, we're ready to plant them.

0:08:540:08:58

-They look like real potatoes already.

-They're seed potatoes.

0:08:580:09:03

We've put them out to "chit" - they start growing these little shoots.

0:09:030:09:08

I'll go see what's happening in the greenhouse.

0:09:080:09:11

Hello, everybody!

0:09:200:09:21

All: Hello!

0:09:210:09:24

-What are we all doing in here?

0:09:240:09:26

-I'm planting some peas...

-OK, and boys, what are you planting?

0:09:260:09:34

BOYS: Spinach!

0:09:340:09:35

What are you doing at the moment, girls?

0:09:350:09:39

-We're putting the compost into the pipe.

-Boys, what are you doing?

0:09:390:09:44

We have to put the dibber into the tray,

0:09:440:09:49

then take it out and then you see some holes.

0:09:490:09:52

It's time to plan the seeds!

0:09:520:09:54

The best bit. Girls, do you want to get your peas?

0:09:540:09:58

And boys, do you want to start planting your spinach?

0:09:580:10:03

And then do you know what we need to do?

0:10:070:10:10

-All: Water them!

-Water them, that's right.

0:10:100:10:13

I've got to go now,

0:10:130:10:14

but thank you very much for inviting me to help you. Bye bye!

0:10:140:10:19

ALL: Bye!

0:10:190:10:20

This is special reporter, Jelly,

0:10:200:10:23

reporting for the Green Balloon Club.

0:10:230:10:26

I've had so much fun gardening today.

0:10:260:10:28

Back to you in the balloon. Up, up and away!

0:10:290:10:32

Ant, how many legs does a ladybird have?

0:10:440:10:47

Ladybirds are beetles, and beetles always have six legs.

0:10:470:10:51

-So six legs.

-One,

0:10:510:10:53

two,

0:10:530:10:55

three,

0:10:550:10:57

four,

0:10:570:10:58

five,

0:10:580:11:00

six legs. How many spots does a ladybird have?

0:11:000:11:04

It depends on what kind of ladybird it is.

0:11:040:11:07

We have about 40 different kinds of ladybirds in this country,

0:11:070:11:12

and this ladybird has two spots, so one on each side.

0:11:120:11:17

There. It looks great.

0:11:270:11:29

If you look, it looks just like a ladybird.

0:11:290:11:33

Oh, yes, it's got antennae.

0:11:330:11:36

There.

0:11:380:11:39

It looks even better!

0:11:390:11:41

You don't have to go far in your garden or your park to find me.

0:11:460:11:50

When Spring arrives and it starts to warm up,

0:11:500:11:54

we start to wake up from the cold.

0:11:540:11:58

I'm a ladybird, and I have a distinctive red body

0:11:580:12:02

and little black spots.

0:12:020:12:04

My bright colours are a warning to predators that I taste nasty.

0:12:040:12:09

That's why birds and most animals don't eat me.

0:12:090:12:12

I'm an armour-plated bug.

0:12:120:12:14

And just like other beetles, I can fly away home.

0:12:140:12:19

If I land on you, I won't bite, I'm harmless, you know.

0:12:190:12:23

I'm known as the gardener's friend, as I eat garden pests.

0:12:230:12:28

Aphids are pests as they destroy garden plants.

0:12:310:12:34

They breed so quickly, and there's so many of them. Every summer

0:12:340:12:39

there's an epic bug battle between us ladybirds and aphids.

0:12:390:12:43

Aphids are really my favourite grub.

0:12:500:12:53

But as fast as I can munch them up, more of them are produced.

0:12:530:12:57

I can eat as many as 30 aphids in one day.

0:12:570:13:01

As summer becomes autumn, I have to find a warm place to fly away to,

0:13:090:13:14

and sit out the winter.

0:13:140:13:17

You can help me and other ladybirds by putting up

0:13:220:13:26

a comfy home in your garden to keep us nice and warm in the winter.

0:13:260:13:31

So bye for now, look out for me in spring!

0:13:310:13:35

If you're doing any gardening, remember to look out for ladybirds,

0:13:410:13:46

because they're really good to have in your garden.

0:13:460:13:51

Look! We've got a ladybird on our website this week.

0:13:510:13:57

We've got a ladybird, or a hyacinth,

0:13:570:13:59

for this week's secret picture password. Which one shall I choose?

0:13:590:14:04

I think Ant would choose the ladybird,

0:14:040:14:07

but Lily-Rose would choose the hyacinth.

0:14:070:14:10

Which one would you choose?

0:14:100:14:13

I think I'll choose the hyacinth because it smells so nice.

0:14:150:14:19

Yes!

0:14:210:14:22

So remember, if you're going on our website this week,

0:14:220:14:26

the secret picture password is the hyacinth. Now we're in,

0:14:260:14:31

I want to have a look through the telescope.

0:14:310:14:36

I really like this. Here we go!

0:14:340:14:36

Shall we choose the city or the woodland?

0:14:360:14:41

I think I'll choose the woodland.

0:14:410:14:44

Now we've got to choose autumn or winter.

0:14:440:14:48

Which shall we go for?

0:14:480:14:50

I think I'd like to see what it looks like in autumn.

0:14:500:14:54

Ooh! That's lovely! Look at all the autumn leaves.

0:14:540:14:58

Let's have a look around.

0:14:580:15:00

There are some things that light up!

0:15:000:15:02

Watch what happens when I click on them.

0:15:020:15:06

Jay! Come and look, Sky's got some new seeds for a new experiment.

0:15:120:15:16

What seeds have you got there, Lily-Rose?

0:15:160:15:20

I've got runner bean seeds. Aren't they pretty?

0:15:200:15:23

They are. Can you give one out to everyone?

0:15:230:15:26

Try and guess what these are.

0:15:260:15:28

-Kidney beans.

-Runner beans?

-Right! Everyone take one.

0:15:280:15:32

-We can't grow them.

-Why not?

0:15:320:15:35

-Because they're food.

-That's right, they are food

0:15:350:15:39

but they're also seeds, so we could plant a kidney bean

0:15:390:15:43

and a runner bean and see which one would grow best.

0:15:430:15:47

Everyone's got a cup, and a paper towel.

0:15:470:15:49

Great. What you've got to do first is fold them in half.

0:15:490:15:54

Everyone fold them. Lovely!

0:15:540:15:58

Next, what we've got to do is grab a little bit of this paper,

0:15:590:16:06

which is all shredded,

0:16:060:16:09

and place it in the middle of your folded pieces of tissue paper.

0:16:090:16:14

What we've got to do next is make a bit of a Swiss roll, OK?

0:16:140:16:19

Just give it a roll from the corners and the sides

0:16:190:16:23

so that all the paper goes in the middle.

0:16:230:16:27

Next we've got to get our cups and put them inside,

0:16:270:16:30

let them kind of release... I think some of you

0:16:300:16:34

need to put a bit more of this paper in the top to fill it up.

0:16:340:16:38

That's brilliant.

0:16:380:16:40

Next, we we take our runner bean and put it down the side of the cup,

0:16:400:16:46

then take a pencil and use the blunt end to push the seeds down

0:16:460:16:51

quite near the bottom.

0:16:510:16:53

-Ok, is everyone there?

-Yes,

-yes.

-Lovely!

0:16:530:16:56

Now take your kidney bean and put it on the opposite side,

0:16:560:17:00

so if your runner bean's there, put the kidney bean on the other side.

0:17:000:17:05

Lovely! I think we need to move ours a bit there.

0:17:050:17:09

We've got the kidney bean on one side

0:17:090:17:12

and the runner bean on the other.

0:17:120:17:14

To make our seeds grow, what do we need?

0:17:140:17:17

Water!

0:17:170:17:20

Yes, so first of all, Cat, you put your cup over here on the tray

0:17:200:17:24

then pour some water in. Be careful.

0:17:240:17:27

I'll tell you when to stop.

0:17:270:17:29

Stop!

0:17:310:17:32

Well done. Next up is Jay.

0:17:320:17:35

Stop!

0:17:420:17:43

OK. Lily-Rose.

0:17:430:17:45

We've got to stop, we've got to have some water for Ant.

0:17:490:17:53

Can you see how it's soaking it all up? Great, isn't it?

0:17:570:18:00

Stop! What we've got to do next is make a fist with our hand,

0:18:000:18:06

then we've got to place it over the cup like this

0:18:060:18:10

then we've got to pour the extra water back inside the jug.

0:18:100:18:14

-Go first, Lily-Rose, are you ready?

-Yep!

-OK, let's hold that.

0:19:140:19:17

-I think it's Ben.

0:19:170:19:22

ALL: Hello!

0:19:220:19:24

This week's Spot is... magnolia blossom!

0:19:290:19:32

Let's get spotting!

0:19:320:19:34

Magnolia trees can be found in gardens.

0:19:380:19:41

A magnolia tree grows big and beautiful flowers.

0:19:440:19:48

They can be different colours like white, pink and purple.

0:19:480:19:54

The flowers grow at the end of its branches.

0:19:540:19:57

They can grow quite big, about the size of your hand.

0:19:570:20:01

The flowers smell lovely, like sweet lemons.

0:20:010:20:05

So remember the clues...

0:20:050:20:07

It has lots of petals.

0:20:090:20:11

The flowers grow at the end of its branches.

0:20:120:20:16

The flowers smell lovely.

0:20:160:20:19

Get spotting! Bye!

0:20:200:20:22

A magnolia blossom! I want to go and spot one. Perhaps I could grow one?

0:20:230:20:29

Don't think we've got enough growing here? I'm not sure

0:20:290:20:33

we'd have enough room for a magnolia tree.

0:20:330:20:36

We can look out for magnolia when we land, which will be really soon.

0:20:360:20:41

Someone look after the beans, cos we're coming in to land!

0:20:410:20:45

And whenever we land it's...

0:20:520:20:56

ALL: Time for a song!

0:20:560:20:58

# It's our world, we're the children of tomorrow

0:21:080:21:14

# Yes it's our world, we want the trees and grass to grow

0:21:140:21:20

# Though we are young we all realise the little things we do

0:21:200:21:27

# Make a difference so let's all care for our world

0:21:270:21:33

# Care for the world

0:21:330:21:35

-# By not wasting precious water. #

-Yes, that's right!

0:21:350:21:40

# Care for the world,

0:21:400:21:41

# Saving energy, so let's all pull together

0:21:410:21:46

# Every boy and girl

0:21:460:21:47

# Let's make sure that we recycle every day

0:21:470:21:54

# Plastic, paper, clothes and bottles, don't throw them away

0:21:540:22:00

# It's our world, everybody everywhere

0:22:000:22:06

# Yes it's our world, let's all show how much we care

0:22:060:22:13

# Though we are young we all realise there's so much we can do

0:22:130:22:18

# And we promise that we'll care cos it's our world

0:22:180:22:24

# Care for the world

0:22:240:22:26

# By not wasting precious water

0:22:260:22:30

# Care for the world

0:22:300:22:33

# Saving energy so let's all pull together

0:22:330:22:37

# Every boy and girl,

0:22:370:22:39

# Let's make sure that we recycle every day

0:22:390:22:46

# Plastic, paper, clothes and bottles, don't throw them away

0:22:460:22:51

# It's our world, we're the children of tomorrow

0:22:510:22:57

# Yes it's our world, we want the trees and grass to grow

0:22:570:23:03

# Though we are young, we all realise the little things we do

0:23:030:23:10

# Make a difference so let's all care for our world

0:23:100:23:16

# And we promise that we'll care cos it's our world

0:23:160:23:22

# Yes, it's up to you and me cos it's our world. #

0:23:220:23:29
