Lily-Rose, you should draw a picture of your hyacinth for the scrapbook.

I will. I wish I could put the smell in it.

It's a ladybird. It's the first one I've seen all year.

They must be starting to come out of hibernation.

It looks like we've got a report coming in.

There's the Green Balloon! Hello!

Oh, yes! It's Melika, Centine, and Zara. Hello, down there!

-ALL: Hello!

-It's the time of year when there are blossoms on the tree.

-And the first leaves start to bud.

-Come and see!

By looking at the shape of the buds, we can work out what trees they are.

-What's this tree?

-Look at the buds.

-Blackthorn?

-No.

-Beech?

-No.

It's tricky to work out which tree it is.

There's two growing at each side. By-two, by-two, by-two!

And there's one in the middle, at the top.

-So this one is a sycamore.

-Let's go and find some more trees.

This one has got red and green.

-And it looks like it snows on the green.

-And it has "sprouches",

and there's only one on it, not two.

-So this one is a...

-Crab apple!

Let's go to the next one.

-This is kinda spiky.

-It's like a blossom.

And it has...these are white and the buds are round.

All in favour?

We think it's blackthorn.

Yeah? Is that lavender?

The little bud is white and fluffy, so it must be the same as this one.

TOGETHER: It's an elder tree!

Hey! These have got green bobs on them.

OK, this one looks like there's lots of leaves, some covering each other.

They're green, and spiking out.

It could be common hawthorn.

Why don't you see which trees you can find where you live?

Sky, do you know anything about seeds?

Oh, well, a little bit. What do you want to know?

-Well, my fruit seed experiment isn't growing.

-Right, OK.

How come some of them have pictures on the front and some don't?

-I left them out in the rain.

-That's probably the reason

why they haven't come out yet. They probably stayed in the soil

to keep nice and warm because it's been really cold recently.

Now it's spring we'll put them outside so they can grow.

-I'll look in the balloon to see if we can find some seeds.

Hello, Jelly! I'm going to plant some seeds. What are you doing?

This is Special Reporter, Jelly,

reporting for the Green Balloon Club. And I'm here,

in the kitchen garden, at Chiswick House.

And I've come to help some friends do some gardening, so I'd better go!

I've got a wheelbarrow, I'd better go and catch up with my friends.

This is the kitchen garden, but you don't grow things here

you need for the kitchen, like the kitchen sink and pots and pans. No!

-This is our team of gardeners, aren't we, people?

-Yes!

This is Karen, and she's going to help us, aren't you?

-Yes, hello, Jelly.

-Hello. Are you ready to do some planting?

-Yeah!

-Come on, let's go!

That's good, keep going.

This is where we're going to do our planting.

First we have to dig a hole because we're going to plant

-something in it, but what are we going to plant?

-Potatoes.

Oh! T-t-tobatoes?

ALL: Potatoes!

Yes, we're going to plant tobatoes!

-Hi, Jelly.

-Have you got the tobato seed?

-Yeah.

We've got such a fantastic hole, we're ready to plant them.

-They look like real potatoes already.

-They're seed potatoes.

We've put them out to "chit" - they start growing these little shoots.

I'll go see what's happening in the greenhouse.

We have to put the dibber into the tray,

then take it out and then you see some holes.

I've had so much fun gardening today.

Ant, how many legs does a ladybird have?

Ladybirds are beetles, and beetles always have six legs.

-So six legs.

-One,

two,

three,

four,

five,

six legs. How many spots does a ladybird have?

It depends on what kind of ladybird it is.

We have about 40 different kinds of ladybirds in this country,

and this ladybird has two spots, so one on each side.

There. It looks great.

If you look, it looks just like a ladybird.

Oh, yes, it's got antennae.

There.

It looks even better!

You don't have to go far in your garden or your park to find me.

When Spring arrives and it starts to warm up,

we start to wake up from the cold.

I'm a ladybird, and I have a distinctive red body

and little black spots.

My bright colours are a warning to predators that I taste nasty.

That's why birds and most animals don't eat me.

I'm an armour-plated bug.

And just like other beetles, I can fly away home.

If I land on you, I won't bite, I'm harmless, you know.

I'm known as the gardener's friend, as I eat garden pests.

Aphids are pests as they destroy garden plants.

They breed so quickly, and there's so many of them. Every summer

there's an epic bug battle between us ladybirds and aphids.

Aphids are really my favourite grub.

But as fast as I can munch them up, more of them are produced.

I can eat as many as 30 aphids in one day.

As summer becomes autumn, I have to find a warm place to fly away to,

and sit out the winter.

You can help me and other ladybirds by putting up

a comfy home in your garden to keep us nice and warm in the winter.

because they're really good to have in your garden.

Let's have a look around.

Jay! Come and look, Sky's got some new seeds for a new experiment.

What seeds have you got there, Lily-Rose?

I've got runner bean seeds. Aren't they pretty?

They are. Can you give one out to everyone?

Try and guess what these are.

-Kidney beans.

-Runner beans?

-Right! Everyone take one.

-We can't grow them.

-Why not?

-Because they're food.

-That's right, they are food

but they're also seeds, so we could plant a kidney bean

and a runner bean and see which one would grow best.

Everyone's got a cup, and a paper towel.

Great. What you've got to do first is fold them in half.

Everyone fold them. Lovely!

Next, what we've got to do is grab a little bit of this paper,

which is all shredded,

and place it in the middle of your folded pieces of tissue paper.

What we've got to do next is make a bit of a Swiss roll, OK?

Just give it a roll from the corners and the sides

so that all the paper goes in the middle.

Next we've got to get our cups and put them inside,

let them kind of release... I think some of you

need to put a bit more of this paper in the top to fill it up.

That's brilliant.

Next, we we take our runner bean and put it down the side of the cup,

then take a pencil and use the blunt end to push the seeds down

quite near the bottom.

-Ok, is everyone there?

-Yes,

-yes.

-Lovely!

Now take your kidney bean and put it on the opposite side,

so if your runner bean's there, put the kidney bean on the other side.

Lovely! I think we need to move ours a bit there.

We've got the kidney bean on one side

and the runner bean on the other.

To make our seeds grow, what do we need?

Water!

Yes, so first of all, Cat, you put your cup over here on the tray

then pour some water in. Be careful.

I'll tell you when to stop.

Stop!

Well done. Next up is Jay.

Stop!

OK. Lily-Rose.

We've got to stop, we've got to have some water for Ant.

Can you see how it's soaking it all up? Great, isn't it?

Stop! What we've got to do next is make a fist with our hand,

then we've got to place it over the cup like this

then we've got to pour the extra water back inside the jug.

-Go first, Lily-Rose, are you ready?

-Yep!

-OK, let's hold that.

This week's Spot is... magnolia blossom!

Let's get spotting!

Magnolia trees can be found in gardens.

A magnolia tree grows big and beautiful flowers.

They can be different colours like white, pink and purple.

The flowers grow at the end of its branches.

They can grow quite big, about the size of your hand.

The flowers smell lovely, like sweet lemons.

So remember the clues...

It has lots of petals.
