Jelly's invited us to a special winter party.

She said something about going camping.

It's really special and important. It's for dressing our tree.

No, it is! Because it's traditional in wintertime to dress a tree,

to celebrate how brilliant it is.

And we're going to dress it in memories and dreams and wishes.

It's to remind me of all the friends I have made all over the country.

I love them so much, so they should be loved and not trodden on.

I loved having a tea party with the birds.

That was the best surprise ever.

This looks like a good place to look for firewood.

What are we looking for?

-Dry wood.

-Well, you can look on the ground,

but a good place to look is up in the trees...ah, look!

These things, if they're hanging off,

these are better, because they're often drier.

-How do you know when it's dry?

-You can break it easily.

You can break it easily, and it makes a good noise, like that.

-SNAP

-That's what we're after.

We're after the tiny bits like this. This helps us get the fire started.

Also these big bits at the end, and even bigger than that.

Once it's started, that's really useful.

-We should have a competition. What do you think?

-Yeah.

See who can collect the most? There's an old saying -

"He or she who collects least wood, sits furthest from the fire."

So if you want to stay warm, you'd better collect the most!

Cat, Ant, Skipper, let's see who gets most wood. Come on, let's go.

Well, what do you think about this?

-Do you think that's good for the fire?

-Yeah.

Well, it's a bit wet, isn't it?

And it's full of little holes.

It's quite old, and that means there's a lot of bugs in here.

When it gets like this, wood's best left here,

because it makes a home for lots of bugs.

-Let's go and look somewhere else, shall we?

-Yeah.

We have to pick them up very carefully.

They feel very prickly.

That's why they're called giant prickly stick insects.

They look a bit scary, but they're very gentle.

-because they've got millions of legs?

They move in waves.

Their body is split into lots and lots of segments.

Hey, guys! We need to get this fire started. Who's going to help me?

-Right, well, what do we need to make fire?

-Wood!

-Sparks.

That's right, Ant, sparks.

I've got this thing called a firesteel,

and look what this does. Ready?

Cool, huh?

-So we're going to use this to make some fire.

-It's like fireworks.

It is just like fireworks. So what we do, is we get this,

which is called fire cloth or char cloth,

a special cloth that's got charcoal in it,

which means that, when you give it a spark, it burns really well.

-You see that? See how it's lit?

-Yeah.

It burns nice and slowly, so what we can do...

is we then put it in here...

Start to burn, hopefully.

What do you call straw that you use for this? Small bits of wood.

-Do you know?

-No.

-You call it tinder.

And the other thing fire needs is air, so...

what we're going to do is start blowing this.

All right, let's see who's got the magic breath. Go!

No. Don't think so.

Do a really big one.

-It's starting to smoke there.

-It's starting to come out.

I think Nature Chris has got the magic breath.

Doesn't that burn your fingers?

It doesn't, but it could do quite easily,

so you shouldn't do this unless you know what you're doing.

Luckily, I've been taught by an expert.

-See the smoke? Look!

-Ah!

-Go on, have another go. Keep going.

-Ooh, it smells lovely.

-That's the first flame.

-There you go, look!

-Put it down, quickly!

-Can you see it starting to come there?

-Yeah.

So we're going to put it in here.

-Ooh! Cool!

Well, that's good, isn't it? How about that for a fire?

Crackle, pop!

-Can you hear the wind going through it?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

That's good, because fire needs air to get underneath it. It likes that.

Is the wind blowing it to make it bigger,

-like we started blowing it to get it started?

-Exactly.

All we need to do is put some of these sticks we collected earlier,

start building it up, and we'll have a bonfire!
