It's a brand new term and CBBC has sent these | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
four magicians back to school. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
They're pretending to be supply teachers, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
so that they can perform amazing magic | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
on unsuspecting classes. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
But because you know and love them, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
this time we've cunningly disguised them. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
Then we hid secret cameras all over classrooms | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
and watched as they taught spectacular lessons. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
Went flying around, like a magic saucer. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
CHILDREN GASP IN AMAZEMENT | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
That was sick. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34
It's more magic, it's more outrageous. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
I was just flabbergasted. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:40
But how long will it take before the classes shout... | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
Hello, it's me, Iain, and welcome back to school for a new term. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
It's Help! My Supply Teacher Is Still Magic. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
You could say it's Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic Two, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
this time it's even trickier. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
Once again, we've swapped regular teachers with magicians | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
and because you know them, we've disguised them. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
We've filmed the results with special cameras | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
hidden in the classrooms. Yeah, we've got more double bluffs | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
than a fox going to a chicken's fancy dress party dressed as a fox. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
We're also showing you loads of great tricks. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
Tricks like this. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
Watch as I magically dissect this orange into equal pieces. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:28
Here's what's coming up. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:35
Fergus is undercover in this class of Year Threes. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
He does a trick about blood cells that will send their hearts racing. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
James is locked and loaded in Up Close And Magical. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
You've been sending in clips of all your best magic tricks | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
and later on, I will be picking my favourite. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
The Wannabe Wizards have wands and they know how to use them. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
But first... | 0:01:59 | 0:02:00
Do you think you'd be able to tell if your teacher started doing magic? | 0:02:00 | 0:02:05
Do you? | 0:02:05 | 0:02:06
This is Fergus. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
He studies magic and now he's about to teach using it. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
The disguise is on. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
It's a white coat, because he's been developing this trick at the lab. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
Enter Year Three. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
They don't know it yet, but they're about to get an amazing | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
lesson about blood that will hit a rich vein of magic. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
So far, none of them have noticed the hidden cameras | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
in their classroom or recognised Fergus as our magician. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
But will they buy his lesson about cells? | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
Now, today we're going to be doing a very exciting experiment with blood. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
You can see there's a fact file behind me, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
which has got lots of really interesting things about blood. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
Let's see if they spot the magic in amongst the facts. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
So blood is very, very important. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
It means we can breathe, it means we can walk, it means we can eat, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
it means we can do everything to survive. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
Now, when scientists or doctors do experiments with blood, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
they use something called a Petri dish. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
Now, a Petri dish is normally a lot smaller than this. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
Note there's nothing under that dish. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
But so everyone in this class can see, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
I've got a much bigger bowl made of metal. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
I've also got something called a pipette. A pipette. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:23
Now a pipette allows for blood to be sucked up, transferred | 0:03:23 | 0:03:28
and put somewhere else. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
All scientifically correct so far. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
But this lesson's about to be sucked up | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
and put somewhere else labelled magic. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
These are going to act as my blood cells, OK? | 0:03:36 | 0:03:42
So, the first part is to take one of those blood cells | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
and to suck it up into the pipette. Ready? | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
Goes into the pipette. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
Now he's putting it under the dish. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
It goes under the Petri dish. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
So we take the second red blood cell, OK? | 0:03:57 | 0:04:02
Check out if you see it disappear this time. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
Watching closely? Goes into the pipette. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
And under the Petri dish. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:15
The last red blood cell goes exactly the same as the other ones. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:20
The pipette goes into the side of the hand, takes the blood cell. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:26
Squeezing the pipette and squeezing the truth. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
And then we can place it under the Petri dish. All three blood cells! | 0:04:28 | 0:04:34
-How cool is that? -The class clearly believe that Fergus is teaching them | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
real science, but they'll know it's magic soon and it'll all kick off. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
Sometimes we get an infection in the body, | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
so you might have had a cold or the flu, a cough, something like that. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
The magic's about to spread like an infection too. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:52
That's going to be represented by a green cell. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:57
So imagine that's the infection goes into the Petri dish, right? | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
OK, so the green ball is in the dish. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
And that goes in with all the other blood cells. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
The red balls have gone in too. That's four balls. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
When the body is fighting an infection, do you know what happens? | 0:05:08 | 0:05:13
Those blood cells actually begin | 0:05:13 | 0:05:17
to start | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
and multiply. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
And there it still goes and goes. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
Whoa, there was only four balls and now there are loads. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:30
It doesn't stop until, look, | 0:05:30 | 0:05:31
the infection is totally full on, | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
it's still going. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
This lesson's been all thrills and blood spills, but now it's | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
time for Fergus to spill the beans about his magical secret. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:46
Now, who thought that was cool? | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
-CLASS: -Me! | 0:05:48 | 0:05:49
Was that the best experiment you've ever seen? | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
-CLASS: -Yes. -Good. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
Now, there is something I haven't actually told you and that's | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
I'm not actually a teacher and I'm not really a scientist. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:05
I'm actually a magician and all of you have been set up | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
by your families, your friends, your school and there's | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
a camera there in the classroom and there's a camera here and there's | 0:06:14 | 0:06:18
a camera there and you're all going to appear on a CBBC show called | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
THEY SCREAM EXCITEDLY | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
No wonder they're excited, that was a sensational trick. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:31
Let's hear how it made their pulses race. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
My favourite bit was when he made millions | 0:06:34 | 0:06:38
and millions of multiples of cells. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
He only started with four balls and they just kept appearing. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
It was impossible to keep count. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
Thousands and thousands of balls came out. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
It was just like the whole building was going to explode. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
An explosive trick and the class had no idea Fergus was a magician. | 0:06:55 | 0:07:00
How long would it take for you to shout... | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
Later on, you'll see what happened | 0:07:08 | 0:07:09
when Katherine went undercover at another school. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
She did a trick with sand that was anything but wet. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
Right now though, James is at a farm | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
and he's about to get up close and magical. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:21
OK, I'm going to show you an absolutely fantastic trick, | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
but I need to borrow a ring? Have you got a ring? Great. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
Keep your eye on that ring. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
We're going to keep this safe and secure in this hand. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
And you can see, if I wrap my fingers slowly around the ring, | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
is there any way that ring could leave my hand? | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
That ring is going nowhere, right? | 0:07:39 | 0:07:40
Especially when you can see from the top, | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
you can see from the bottom. In fact, you can see all angles. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
Would you roll up my sleeve? | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
Excellent and hold onto my wrist, making it impossible, OK? | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
You have complete control at the moment | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
and there's no way that ring can leave my hand. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
Watch. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:56
If I blow, see, the ring completely disappears. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
Whoa, the ring's disappeared. How is that possible? But there's more. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
-Did you see where it went? -No. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
Well, that might be a problem. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
Ah, right. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:10
No need to worry, cos the ring is still safe and secure. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
In fact, | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
just here... | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
Does that ring look familiar? | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
It's locked. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:24
It's locked, secure, on this combination padlock. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
Now the only way you can open this lock is if you know | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
the correct combination and if the numbers aren't right, it won't open. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:38
Now, unfortunately, I don't know what the combination is | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
but maybe you could help me. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
So, if you take the padlock and think of any random four numbers. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:48
Put them in. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:50
And give it a little pull. Did it open? | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
No, ah. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:57
But wait, seeing as you're in control, it only makes sense | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
if we make this personal to you. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
Now, I'd never ask a woman how old she is, especially on TV. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
But if you could put in the year of your date of birth. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
Now, before you open that padlock, nobody's asked you before how old | 0:09:14 | 0:09:18
-you are and we've never met and we've never set anything up? -No, no. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
If you'd just pull that padlock. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
Take the ring off. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:25
The ring's been returned, the padlock undone, | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
but James' secret is safe. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
That trick was absolutely amazing. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:33
Now Katherine's going to set you a magical challenge | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
in Tricks Of The Trade. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:39
If you fancy yourself as a magician, | 0:09:39 | 0:09:40
here's a trick you can try on your mates. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
Katherine's got a large cup, a plastic card... | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
..three ten pence coins like these... | 0:09:49 | 0:09:51
..and a jug of water. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
With the plastic card balancing on the edge of the cup like this, | 0:09:56 | 0:10:01
Katherine will show you how to balance | 0:10:01 | 0:10:03
the three coins on this end of the card, without them falling off. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
Can you work out how to do it? | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
Keep watching and you'll find out later in the show. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
It's going to be incredible. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
Right now we have something amazing for you. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
This is the Interactive Illusion. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
This is a trick where you can take part at home. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
So come on, you need to pay close attention. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
So come right over here, right next to the TV. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
If you haven't got a TV, just come close to the radio. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34
We're not on the radio? Well, maybe just the computer. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
Just watch closely. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
You ready? Good. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
Start by placing your finger on any of these animals | 0:10:46 | 0:10:50
in this row here. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:52
Now spell out the animal | 0:10:52 | 0:10:53
that you have chosen, | 0:10:53 | 0:10:54
moving one space for each letter. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:58
You can move up or down, | 0:10:58 | 0:10:59
left or right, but not diagonally. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
If you had chosen camel, | 0:11:03 | 0:11:04
you would move your finger five spaces, | 0:11:04 | 0:11:07
spelling the word camel. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
C-A-M-E-L. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
Spell your animal now. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15
I don't think you're on the horse, | 0:11:20 | 0:11:22
so we'll remove that. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:23
Now move your finger five spaces. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
You can move up or down, left or right. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:28
That's great. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:34
OK, you're not on the badger | 0:11:34 | 0:11:35
or the cat, so we'll remove those. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:37
Now, move seven spaces, | 0:11:39 | 0:11:41
up or down, left or right. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:43
OK, so you're not on the camel | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
or the lion. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:53
I'd like you to move five more spaces. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:55
OK, you're not on the fish. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
Now, move one more space. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:05
All done? | 0:12:07 | 0:12:09
So you started on an animal | 0:12:09 | 0:12:10
and you've moved to a random location, | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
but I know you're thinking of a magician's favourite animal, | 0:12:13 | 0:12:17
a rabbit! | 0:12:17 | 0:12:18
Were you thinking rabbit? | 0:12:18 | 0:12:20
Now it's time to hare off to the farm, | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
where Fergus is getting up close and magical. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
Gemma, could you just say stop | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
-on a card for me? -Stop. -Lovely. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:28
I'd like you to have a peek at this card and remember it. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
-Mm-hm. -Have you got that? -Yeah. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:33
I'm just going to show it to the camera as well. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:35
It's the three of hearts. Remember that card. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
Now, I'm going to find your card in quite an unusual way. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
How long do you think it would take | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
if I was to go through the cards, take out your card, | 0:12:43 | 0:12:47
put two holes in your card and then thread this chain through the card? | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
How long do you think that would take? | 0:12:50 | 0:12:52
-I think it would take you about... -Half a minute? | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
-Half a minute? -Three minutes. -Not that fast. | 0:12:56 | 0:12:58
Maybe three minutes, maybe between half a minute and three minutes. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
But what I want you to do is imagine I've already done it. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
So, imagine you can see the card, | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
you can actually visualise the card on the chain. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
-What was the card? -The three of hearts. -The three of hearts, Gemma. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
Watch - one, two, three. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:18
I just wave and can you see? | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
Look, just rub the chain. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:21
Can you see? That's gone right the way through the card. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:25
Whoa! Let' get a rewind. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
One, two, three. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
Fergus just made the card they chose appear threaded on the chain. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:35
That's amazing. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:36
Through the card and actually, if I take the chain off and show the | 0:13:36 | 0:13:41
camera, you can see that that has gone all the way through the card. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:45
Have a look. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:46
It's magic. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
-Isn't that cool? -Yeah. -Marvellously cool. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
All he hardly did was just wave it round the key chain | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56
-and then after that it just vanished. -Like magic. | 0:13:56 | 0:14:01
That trick was the best trick I ever seen in magic history. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:08
Wow. Well the quantity of the magic is exhausting | 0:14:09 | 0:14:13
and the quality has been out of sight. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
So far out of sight, it's making me squint. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
So I feel like I've earned a sit down, but before I do, | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
let's have a look at what's coming up. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:24
It's all kinds of ridiculousness. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
Katherine reveals a secret in tricks of the trade. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
Have you worked it out yet? | 0:14:30 | 0:14:32
John's jumping coins are up close and magical. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:36
And watch what happens | 0:14:36 | 0:14:37
when Katherine goes undercover in another school. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:40
Will she fool the class or will they realise | 0:14:40 | 0:14:43
their supply teacher is still magic? | 0:14:43 | 0:14:45
Isn't that clever? | 0:14:45 | 0:14:46
Oh! Each week I'm bringing you | 0:14:47 | 0:14:49
another of my new favourite magic movers and shakers, | 0:14:49 | 0:14:53
doing tricks in their own cribs, yards and front rooms. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
We call them the Wannabe Wizards. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
So I've got my comfy chair. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:01
I've got my computer thingy to watch them all on | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
and I've got my trendy Anglepoise. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:07
Let's do this already. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:09
We asked you to send in clips | 0:15:11 | 0:15:13
of yourself performing your best magic tricks. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:16
We received loads of clips from all over the country. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:18
Each week I'll be choosing a favourite Wannabe Wizard | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
and showing them to you guys. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
My Wannabe Wizard this time is Lewis from Lancashire | 0:15:23 | 0:15:26
and he's the straight man in a magical double act. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:29
Hello, everybody. I'm going to be doing a trick called The Wonder Rope. | 0:15:29 | 0:15:32
But this isn't just any ordinary rope, it's a magic rope. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
You see, if I just hold it this way and slide my hand across, | 0:15:35 | 0:15:39
it stiffens all the way through, no matter where I hold it. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:43
Now if I could just ask my assistant, Fido, | 0:15:43 | 0:15:46
to come along and hold this for me, while I get the instructions. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:49
Oh, you've broke it. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:51
Haven't had it two minutes and you've broke it, Fido. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:54
OK, I'll try again. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
Oh, you're no use, Fido. Go. | 0:15:57 | 0:15:59
All right, I'll give you one more chance. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:03
OK, hold this while I get the instructions. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
That's it, I've had it with you. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:09
Fido, go! You trot along and get your dinner. Go. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:13
OK, now I'll just show you how it's done. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:15
You just hold the rope like that, slide across and there it is. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:19
And that's The Wonder Rope. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:20
Fido! | 0:16:20 | 0:16:21 | |
Magic. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:24
It sure was and that's why Lewis is my Wannabe Wizard. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
Now it's time for Katherine to reveal | 0:16:29 | 0:16:31
the secret in Tricks Of The Trade. | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
With a plastic card balancing on the edge of a cup like this, | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
Katherine will show you how to balance the three coins | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
on the end of the card, without them falling off. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
Come on, have you worked it out? | 0:16:43 | 0:16:45
How many of you got it? | 0:16:45 | 0:16:47
Does it work because Katherine has a steady hand? | 0:16:47 | 0:16:52
No. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:53 | |
Is it about how far she put the coins on the card? | 0:16:53 | 0:16:57
No. | 0:16:57 | 0:16:59 | |
Want to know how it's done? | 0:16:59 | 0:17:00
Fill the cup with water, | 0:17:01 | 0:17:03
right up to the brim. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:04
When the water touches the card, | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
it makes something called surface tension. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:11
This causes the card to stick | 0:17:11 | 0:17:13
and allows you to put weight on the end of the card. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:16
If you take it slowly, that is. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:18
Katherine's being very careful. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:20
OK, so that's the first one balancing on the card. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
Now for the second. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:26
There's two coins balancing. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
No water spilt. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
No wobble on the card. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
Here comes the third. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:36
Good skills, Katherine. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:38
Did you get it? | 0:17:38 | 0:17:39
Are you amazing already? | 0:17:39 | 0:17:41
Now you've got something to impress all your friends with. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:45
Next it's time for John, who's at a car museum, | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
getting up close and magical. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
-Hi, girls, how are you? -Good. -Good. -Amazing. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
You're amazing, already? | 0:17:53 | 0:17:54
When I show you this, you'll be even more than amazing. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:57
I'm going to show you a trick using coins. Have a look. | 0:17:57 | 0:17:59
Hold out your hand. You can have a look at these coins and, yes, | 0:17:59 | 0:18:02
you can have a look at those coins. They're £2 coins. | 0:18:02 | 0:18:05
I haven't got any other coins, no extra coins, just four coins. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:08
Here's what's going to happen. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:09
We're going to try and make money change hands. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
Faye, would you help me with this? | 0:18:12 | 0:18:14
I'll hold one coin, you take the other three. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:16
John has one of the £2 coins. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
Faye has the other three. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:20
I throw it up in the air and it vanishes and it appears over here. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:25
John made his coin jump from one hand to the next. A magical start. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:29
Check that coin, make sure it's genuine. I'll take these. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:32
You saw that one jump across, all right, you saw it jump across. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:35
This next one you're going to hear jump across, all right? | 0:18:35 | 0:18:39
So you'll actually hear the next one jump across. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:42
Can you hold these coins again for me? Is that all right? | 0:18:42 | 0:18:45
If I put them in your hand like this, | 0:18:45 | 0:18:47
don't do anything with them yet, just hold them like that. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
Can you give me that last coin? | 0:18:50 | 0:18:51
Here's what I want you to do, Faye. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:53
Can you very, very carefully, get your other hand | 0:18:53 | 0:18:56
and just cup it over the coin like this? | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
John has one coin. Faye has the other three. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:00
Then you're going to give the coins a shake for me. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
Can you do that? Give them a shake. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
Bit more, give them a nice good shake. That's it, now stop. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
Did you hear the sound change? | 0:19:08 | 0:19:09
I think one of the coins has vanished but don't look yet. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:12
Listen to mine, see if we can make it arrive. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:15
COINS JINGLE | 0:19:15 | 0:19:16
Now I've got two and how many have you got? | 0:19:17 | 0:19:19
You've got two as well. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:21
It's pretty amazing so far. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:23
Now listen, you've seen one jump across | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
and you've heard one jump across. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:28
This time you're going to feel one jump across. OK? | 0:19:28 | 0:19:32
We'll take all four coins. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:33
Anna, would you help me with this one? | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
Can you hold your fingers like this for me? Excellent. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
Maybe this hand. Wonderful. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:39
I want you to hold those coins exactly the same way | 0:19:39 | 0:19:42
that I'm holding mine. All right? | 0:19:42 | 0:19:44
Exactly the same way, just like this by the edges. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:46
That's it. Don't drop them just yet. I'm going to hold mine here. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
Drop yours into your hand and I'll drop mine into my hand | 0:19:49 | 0:19:52
and as soon as you drop them, | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
grab hold of them so I can't switch them. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:56
Are you ready? One, two, three, go. | 0:19:56 | 0:20:00
Now, did you feel anything? | 0:20:00 | 0:20:02
Them drop into my hand? | 0:20:02 | 0:20:05
Do you feel anything now? Have a little feel. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
-Feels like one. -It feels like one. I told you she'd feel it. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
Open it up. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:13
Now you've just got one coin and I didn't touch anything. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:15
You dropped it in, and in my hand I've got three coins. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
-Oh! -That's pretty impressive but do you know what we'll do now? | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
You're actually going to get a chance to make it happen yourself. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
Count them into your hand. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:26
You've got one, two, three, | 0:20:26 | 0:20:29
four coins. How many have I got? | 0:20:29 | 0:20:31
-None. -None. Excellent. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:32
If I make those into a little pile like this, | 0:20:32 | 0:20:34
here's what I want you to do for me. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:36
I'll ask you in a moment to take one of those coins | 0:20:36 | 0:20:38
and lift it and place it into my hand | 0:20:38 | 0:20:41
and as soon as you place it into my hand, close your hand tight | 0:20:41 | 0:20:44
so that there's no way I could sneak any coins back in there. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
OK, can you do that now? Lift it in, onto my hand | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
then immediately close your hand tight. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
Excellent. How many are in your hand? | 0:20:52 | 0:20:54
-Three. -How many are in my hand? -One. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
One. Excellent. Watch. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:58
It vanishes. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:00
Completely gone. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:01
And how many have you got now in your hand? | 0:21:01 | 0:21:04
-Four. -Four. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
Wow. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:08 | |
They're speechless. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:09
I'm speechless. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:11
John's speechless. I'm speechless. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:14
He was just, like, making it vanish. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:18
I had to place it into his hand and he just made it disappear | 0:21:18 | 0:21:21
and jump into my hand. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:23
I didn't, like, feel anything. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:25
Amazing. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:27
-Fantastic. -Brilliant. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
Did you see that? You didn't? | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
You need to watch slower next time. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:36
Next up is Katherine, and guess what? | 0:21:36 | 0:21:38
She's about to be a supply teacher to fool another class. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:42
The disguise is on, the hidden cameras are set. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:44
Enter Year Five. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:47
They don't know it yet, but Katherine's about to take | 0:21:47 | 0:21:50
a magical lesson about water that's very fishy. | 0:21:50 | 0:21:53
None of them have recognised Katherine in her disguise or | 0:21:53 | 0:21:56
noticed the hidden cameras in their classroom. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:58
But will they be able to hide their excitement once the magic begins? | 0:21:58 | 0:22:02
-Hello, everyone. CLASS: -Hello. | 0:22:02 | 0:22:04
My name is Miss Goldstone | 0:22:05 | 0:22:07
and I'm going to be taking your class today, so we're going to be | 0:22:07 | 0:22:10
doing a bit of science and a bit of geography mixed together. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:13
We're learning all about water purification. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:17
Now, I've got a bowl of water here on the table | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
and this is going to represent the water that we buy in a supermarket. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:24
Watch that bowl of clear water very closely. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:27
That's where the magic's going to happen. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:29
Depending on where this water comes from, | 0:22:29 | 0:22:31
it has to go through different purification processes to make | 0:22:31 | 0:22:34
it clean enough for us to drink. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:36
Not many people realise this, but a lot of our water starts off | 0:22:36 | 0:22:40
very dark and dirty and contaminated. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:44
How did that happen? | 0:22:44 | 0:22:46
She's turned it from clear water to dirty water right before their eyes. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:50
And depending on where that water's come from, | 0:22:50 | 0:22:53
it has different chemical elements in it. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
Katherine's started to muddy the waters of this lesson | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
but they still don't suspect a thing. | 0:22:58 | 0:23:00
For example, our purified water often comes from lakes, | 0:23:00 | 0:23:04
it comes from rivers and wetlands, | 0:23:04 | 0:23:06
and you can find something called magnesium in it. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:09
Now, magnesium is a chemical element and I've got some red sand here | 0:23:09 | 0:23:13
and this is going to represent the magnesium. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:17
OK? So we're going to put this into our water. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:22
So she's poured the red sand into the bowl | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
and it's dissolved into the dirty water. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:27
There we go. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
Now, another chemical element that's found is iron | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
and I've got some yellow sand here to represent the iron. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:38
So again, this is going to go into our water. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:40
There you go. And again we're going to mix that in. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:44
Now the yellow sand has been added to the dirt in that water. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:48
There we go. And finally, I've got some blue sand here. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:53
Now this blue sand represents the chlorine that's found in the water. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
OK, so this is going to go in as well. | 0:23:56 | 0:23:58
Like that and again it's all mixed up together. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:02
Katherine's added the blue sand to the water and that's dissolved too. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:06
The magic's about to happen. Keep your eyes on that bowl. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:09
As I said, all these chemical elements are dissolved | 0:24:09 | 0:24:13
into the water, so, for the water to be safe for us to drink, | 0:24:13 | 0:24:17
we need to take all these chemical elements out. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:19
They're with you, Katherine, they totally believe you're a teacher. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:23
Now reel them in with the magic. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:24
There are a lot of different processes that we can use for that. | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
One of the processes is called a pressure filter system. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:31
This is when all the water is put into a big tank | 0:24:31 | 0:24:35
and put under pressure and squeezed through a filter. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
There's nothing in her hands or up her sleeves. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
This is often used to remove magnesium | 0:24:41 | 0:24:43
and it's actually brought back to its solid form like that. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:50
She's pulled the red sand right out of the water and it's dry. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:53
Isn't that clever? | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
Now, another process that's quite often used is something | 0:24:56 | 0:24:59
called a slow sand system. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:02
Now, this can take a long time, | 0:25:02 | 0:25:04
it can take up to ten days for the water to pass through the sand. | 0:25:04 | 0:25:07
But this is used a lot... | 0:25:07 | 0:25:08
..to take out the iron. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:12
Now she's pulled out the yellow sand and it's dry. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:20
The class can't believe it and there's more where that came from. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:24
And now the final process that's used is boiling the water. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:28
Now, when we boil the water, it actually separates the contaminated | 0:25:28 | 0:25:33
water with the pure water and allows us to take out all the chlorine. | 0:25:33 | 0:25:39
It's been purified by some pure magic. | 0:25:39 | 0:25:42
Like that. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:43
Now just remember, everybody, that was just a demonstration of how | 0:25:44 | 0:25:49
you purify water, so I don't want you trying to purify puddles outside | 0:25:49 | 0:25:53
or your bathwater at home, so you can turn it into drinking water. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
That does give you some idea about how our water | 0:25:56 | 0:26:00
comes from the source and into the bottles of water that we drink. | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03
The water's dirty and now it's time for Katherine to come clean. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:08
So, would you all like to know a secret? | 0:26:08 | 0:26:12
-CLASS: -Yes. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:14
Yeah? | 0:26:14 | 0:26:15 | |
What you just saw then, that wasn't really just a water demonstration, | 0:26:15 | 0:26:20
that was actually a magic trick, because I'm not | 0:26:20 | 0:26:24
a teacher, I'm a magician and all of you have been set up by your | 0:26:24 | 0:26:28
parents and your teachers and you're all being filmed right now. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:33
There's a camera over there and there's a camera over there, | 0:26:33 | 0:26:36
and there's a camera over there, cos you're all going to be on | 0:26:36 | 0:26:39
Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
CHEERING | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
Katherine's trick with sand used sleight of hand | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
and it deceived my eyes. | 0:26:46 | 0:26:47
But how did the class see it? | 0:26:47 | 0:26:50
At first I was, like, really confused cos | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
in my mind, I was like, "How could she do that?" | 0:26:53 | 0:26:56
-Just don't know what happened there. -Yeah. -Wow. | 0:26:56 | 0:26:59
Can't believe it. | 0:26:59 | 0:27:01
They couldn't believe it because the coloured sands | 0:27:01 | 0:27:03
disappeared into the water, but all came out dry. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:07
All the chlorine. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:09
That was weird because you can't do that | 0:27:09 | 0:27:12
because it all dissolves in the water. | 0:27:12 | 0:27:14
An incredible trick and this class didn't realise... | 0:27:14 | 0:27:22
See you later, but until then, if you're at school and you think | 0:27:27 | 0:27:31
something magical is occurring, maybe you'll find yourself shouting, | 0:27:31 | 0:27:35
"Help! My Supply Teacher Is Still Magic!" | 0:27:35 | 0:27:38
