It's a brand new term and CBBC has sent these

0:00:020:00:03

four magicians back to school.

0:00:030:00:06

They're pretending to be supply teachers,

0:00:060:00:09

so that they can perform amazing magic

0:00:090:00:12

on unsuspecting classes.

0:00:120:00:14

But because you know and love them,

0:00:140:00:16

this time we've cunningly disguised them.

0:00:160:00:18

Then we hid secret cameras all over classrooms

0:00:210:00:25

and watched as they taught spectacular lessons.

0:00:250:00:28

Went flying around, like a magic saucer.

0:00:280:00:31

CHILDREN GASP IN AMAZEMENT

0:00:310:00:33

That was sick.

0:00:330:00:34

It's more magic, it's more outrageous.

0:00:360:00:39

I was just flabbergasted.

0:00:390:00:40

But how long will it take before the classes shout...

0:00:400:00:43

Hello, it's me, Iain, and welcome back to school for a new term.

0:00:500:00:54

It's Help! My Supply Teacher Is Still Magic.

0:00:540:00:58

You could say it's Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic Two,

0:00:580:01:01

this time it's even trickier.

0:01:010:01:04

Once again, we've swapped regular teachers with magicians

0:01:040:01:08

and because you know them, we've disguised them.

0:01:080:01:11

We've filmed the results with special cameras

0:01:110:01:13

hidden in the classrooms. Yeah, we've got more double bluffs

0:01:130:01:16

than a fox going to a chicken's fancy dress party dressed as a fox.

0:01:160:01:20

We're also showing you loads of great tricks.

0:01:200:01:23

Tricks like this.

0:01:230:01:24

Watch as I magically dissect this orange into equal pieces.

0:01:240:01:28

Here's what's coming up.

0:01:340:01:35

Fergus is undercover in this class of Year Threes.

0:01:370:01:40

He does a trick about blood cells that will send their hearts racing.

0:01:400:01:44

James is locked and loaded in Up Close And Magical.

0:01:450:01:48

You've been sending in clips of all your best magic tricks

0:01:490:01:52

and later on, I will be picking my favourite.

0:01:520:01:55

The Wannabe Wizards have wands and they know how to use them.

0:01:550:01:59

But first...

0:01:590:02:00

Do you think you'd be able to tell if your teacher started doing magic?

0:02:000:02:05

Do you?

0:02:050:02:06

This is Fergus.

0:02:070:02:09

He studies magic and now he's about to teach using it.

0:02:090:02:12

The disguise is on.

0:02:120:02:14

It's a white coat, because he's been developing this trick at the lab.

0:02:140:02:18

Enter Year Three.

0:02:200:02:21

They don't know it yet, but they're about to get an amazing

0:02:210:02:24

lesson about blood that will hit a rich vein of magic.

0:02:240:02:28

So far, none of them have noticed the hidden cameras

0:02:280:02:31

in their classroom or recognised Fergus as our magician.

0:02:310:02:35

But will they buy his lesson about cells?

0:02:350:02:38

Now, today we're going to be doing a very exciting experiment with blood.

0:02:380:02:43

You can see there's a fact file behind me,

0:02:430:02:45

which has got lots of really interesting things about blood.

0:02:450:02:48

Let's see if they spot the magic in amongst the facts.

0:02:480:02:51

So blood is very, very important.

0:02:510:02:55

It means we can breathe, it means we can walk, it means we can eat,

0:02:550:02:58

it means we can do everything to survive.

0:02:580:03:01

Now, when scientists or doctors do experiments with blood,

0:03:010:03:05

they use something called a Petri dish.

0:03:050:03:08

Now, a Petri dish is normally a lot smaller than this.

0:03:080:03:10

Note there's nothing under that dish.

0:03:100:03:13

But so everyone in this class can see,

0:03:130:03:15

I've got a much bigger bowl made of metal.

0:03:150:03:18

I've also got something called a pipette. A pipette.

0:03:180:03:23

Now a pipette allows for blood to be sucked up, transferred

0:03:230:03:28

and put somewhere else.

0:03:280:03:30

All scientifically correct so far.

0:03:300:03:32

But this lesson's about to be sucked up

0:03:320:03:34

and put somewhere else labelled magic.

0:03:340:03:36

These are going to act as my blood cells, OK?

0:03:360:03:42

So, the first part is to take one of those blood cells

0:03:420:03:45

and to suck it up into the pipette. Ready?

0:03:450:03:48

Goes into the pipette.

0:03:490:03:51

Now he's putting it under the dish.

0:03:510:03:54

It goes under the Petri dish.

0:03:540:03:56

So we take the second red blood cell, OK?

0:03:570:04:02

Check out if you see it disappear this time.

0:04:020:04:04

Watching closely? Goes into the pipette.

0:04:040:04:08

And under the Petri dish.

0:04:130:04:15

The last red blood cell goes exactly the same as the other ones.

0:04:150:04:20

The pipette goes into the side of the hand, takes the blood cell.

0:04:200:04:26

Squeezing the pipette and squeezing the truth.

0:04:260:04:28

And then we can place it under the Petri dish. All three blood cells!

0:04:280:04:34

-How cool is that?

-The class clearly believe that Fergus is teaching them

0:04:340:04:37

real science, but they'll know it's magic soon and it'll all kick off.

0:04:370:04:41

Sometimes we get an infection in the body,

0:04:410:04:45

so you might have had a cold or the flu, a cough, something like that.

0:04:450:04:48

The magic's about to spread like an infection too.

0:04:480:04:52

That's going to be represented by a green cell.

0:04:520:04:57

So imagine that's the infection goes into the Petri dish, right?

0:04:570:05:00

OK, so the green ball is in the dish.

0:05:000:05:03

And that goes in with all the other blood cells.

0:05:030:05:05

The red balls have gone in too. That's four balls.

0:05:050:05:08

When the body is fighting an infection, do you know what happens?

0:05:080:05:13

Those blood cells actually begin

0:05:130:05:17

to start

0:05:170:05:20

and multiply.

0:05:200:05:23

And there it still goes and goes.

0:05:240:05:26

Whoa, there was only four balls and now there are loads.

0:05:260:05:30

It doesn't stop until, look,

0:05:300:05:31

the infection is totally full on,

0:05:310:05:33

it's still going.

0:05:330:05:35

This lesson's been all thrills and blood spills, but now it's

0:05:380:05:41

time for Fergus to spill the beans about his magical secret.

0:05:410:05:46

Now, who thought that was cool?

0:05:460:05:48

-CLASS:

-Me!

0:05:480:05:49

Was that the best experiment you've ever seen?

0:05:490:05:52

-CLASS:

-Yes.

-Good.

0:05:520:05:54

Now, there is something I haven't actually told you and that's

0:05:540:05:58

I'm not actually a teacher and I'm not really a scientist.

0:05:580:06:05

I'm actually a magician and all of you have been set up

0:06:050:06:09

by your families, your friends, your school and there's

0:06:110:06:14

a camera there in the classroom and there's a camera here and there's

0:06:140:06:18

a camera there and you're all going to appear on a CBBC show called

0:06:180:06:21

Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic.

0:06:210:06:23

THEY SCREAM EXCITEDLY

0:06:230:06:25

No wonder they're excited, that was a sensational trick.

0:06:270:06:31

Let's hear how it made their pulses race.

0:06:310:06:34

My favourite bit was when he made millions

0:06:340:06:38

and millions of multiples of cells.

0:06:380:06:40

He only started with four balls and they just kept appearing.

0:06:400:06:44

It was impossible to keep count.

0:06:440:06:46

Thousands and thousands of balls came out.

0:06:480:06:50

It was just like the whole building was going to explode.

0:06:500:06:53

An explosive trick and the class had no idea Fergus was a magician.

0:06:550:07:00

How long would it take for you to shout...

0:07:000:07:02

Later on, you'll see what happened

0:07:080:07:09

when Katherine went undercover at another school.

0:07:090:07:13

She did a trick with sand that was anything but wet.

0:07:130:07:17

Right now though, James is at a farm

0:07:170:07:19

and he's about to get up close and magical.

0:07:190:07:21

OK, I'm going to show you an absolutely fantastic trick,

0:07:210:07:24

but I need to borrow a ring? Have you got a ring? Great.

0:07:240:07:28

Keep your eye on that ring.

0:07:280:07:30

We're going to keep this safe and secure in this hand.

0:07:300:07:33

And you can see, if I wrap my fingers slowly around the ring,

0:07:330:07:36

is there any way that ring could leave my hand?

0:07:360:07:39

That ring is going nowhere, right?

0:07:390:07:40

Especially when you can see from the top,

0:07:400:07:43

you can see from the bottom. In fact, you can see all angles.

0:07:430:07:45

Would you roll up my sleeve?

0:07:450:07:47

Excellent and hold onto my wrist, making it impossible, OK?

0:07:470:07:50

You have complete control at the moment

0:07:500:07:52

and there's no way that ring can leave my hand.

0:07:520:07:55

Watch.

0:07:550:07:56

If I blow, see, the ring completely disappears.

0:07:570:08:01

Whoa, the ring's disappeared. How is that possible? But there's more.

0:08:010:08:05

-Did you see where it went?

-No.

0:08:050:08:07

Well, that might be a problem.

0:08:070:08:09

Ah, right.

0:08:090:08:10

No need to worry, cos the ring is still safe and secure.

0:08:120:08:16

In fact,

0:08:160:08:18

just here...

0:08:180:08:20

Does that ring look familiar?

0:08:210:08:23

It's locked.

0:08:230:08:24

It's locked, secure, on this combination padlock.

0:08:260:08:30

Now the only way you can open this lock is if you know

0:08:300:08:33

the correct combination and if the numbers aren't right, it won't open.

0:08:330:08:38

Now, unfortunately, I don't know what the combination is

0:08:380:08:41

but maybe you could help me.

0:08:410:08:43

So, if you take the padlock and think of any random four numbers.

0:08:430:08:48

Put them in.

0:08:480:08:50

And give it a little pull. Did it open?

0:08:540:08:56

No, ah.

0:08:560:08:57

But wait, seeing as you're in control, it only makes sense

0:08:580:09:01

if we make this personal to you.

0:09:010:09:03

Now, I'd never ask a woman how old she is, especially on TV.

0:09:030:09:06

But if you could put in the year of your date of birth.

0:09:060:09:09

Now, before you open that padlock, nobody's asked you before how old

0:09:140:09:18

-you are and we've never met and we've never set anything up?

-No, no.

0:09:180:09:21

If you'd just pull that padlock.

0:09:210:09:24

Take the ring off.

0:09:240:09:25

The ring's been returned, the padlock undone,

0:09:250:09:28

but James' secret is safe.

0:09:280:09:30

That trick was absolutely amazing.

0:09:310:09:33

Now Katherine's going to set you a magical challenge

0:09:340:09:37

in Tricks Of The Trade.

0:09:370:09:39

If you fancy yourself as a magician,

0:09:390:09:40

here's a trick you can try on your mates.

0:09:400:09:43

Katherine's got a large cup, a plastic card...

0:09:430:09:47

..three ten pence coins like these...

0:09:490:09:51

..and a jug of water.

0:09:530:09:55

With the plastic card balancing on the edge of the cup like this,

0:09:560:10:01

Katherine will show you how to balance

0:10:010:10:03

the three coins on this end of the card, without them falling off.

0:10:030:10:07

Can you work out how to do it?

0:10:100:10:12

Keep watching and you'll find out later in the show.

0:10:120:10:14

It's going to be incredible.

0:10:140:10:16

Right now we have something amazing for you.

0:10:180:10:21

This is the Interactive Illusion.

0:10:210:10:23

This is a trick where you can take part at home.

0:10:230:10:25

So come on, you need to pay close attention.

0:10:250:10:27

So come right over here, right next to the TV.

0:10:270:10:30

If you haven't got a TV, just come close to the radio.

0:10:300:10:34

We're not on the radio? Well, maybe just the computer.

0:10:340:10:37

Just watch closely.

0:10:370:10:39

You ready? Good.

0:10:440:10:46

Start by placing your finger on any of these animals

0:10:460:10:50

in this row here.

0:10:500:10:52

Now spell out the animal

0:10:520:10:53

that you have chosen,

0:10:530:10:54

moving one space for each letter.

0:10:540:10:58

You can move up or down,

0:10:580:10:59

left or right, but not diagonally.

0:10:590:11:03

If you had chosen camel,

0:11:030:11:04

you would move your finger five spaces,

0:11:040:11:07

spelling the word camel.

0:11:070:11:09

C-A-M-E-L.

0:11:090:11:13

Spell your animal now.

0:11:130:11:15

I don't think you're on the horse,

0:11:200:11:22

so we'll remove that.

0:11:220:11:23

Now move your finger five spaces.

0:11:230:11:26

You can move up or down, left or right.

0:11:260:11:28

That's great.

0:11:320:11:34

OK, you're not on the badger

0:11:340:11:35

or the cat, so we'll remove those.

0:11:350:11:37

Now, move seven spaces,

0:11:390:11:41

up or down, left or right.

0:11:410:11:43

OK, so you're not on the camel

0:11:490:11:51

or the lion.

0:11:510:11:53

I'd like you to move five more spaces.

0:11:530:11:55

OK, you're not on the fish.

0:12:000:12:03

Now, move one more space.

0:12:030:12:05

All done?

0:12:070:12:09

So you started on an animal

0:12:090:12:10

and you've moved to a random location,

0:12:100:12:13

but I know you're thinking of a magician's favourite animal,

0:12:130:12:17

a rabbit!

0:12:170:12:18

Were you thinking rabbit?

0:12:180:12:20

Now it's time to hare off to the farm,

0:12:200:12:22

where Fergus is getting up close and magical.

0:12:220:12:25

Gemma, could you just say stop

0:12:250:12:27

-on a card for me?

-Stop.

-Lovely.

0:12:270:12:28

I'd like you to have a peek at this card and remember it.

0:12:280:12:31

-Mm-hm.

-Have you got that?

-Yeah.

0:12:310:12:33

I'm just going to show it to the camera as well.

0:12:330:12:35

It's the three of hearts. Remember that card.

0:12:350:12:38

Now, I'm going to find your card in quite an unusual way.

0:12:380:12:41

How long do you think it would take

0:12:410:12:43

if I was to go through the cards, take out your card,

0:12:430:12:47

put two holes in your card and then thread this chain through the card?

0:12:470:12:50

How long do you think that would take?

0:12:500:12:52

-I think it would take you about...

-Half a minute?

0:12:520:12:56

-Half a minute?

-Three minutes.

-Not that fast.

0:12:560:12:58

Maybe three minutes, maybe between half a minute and three minutes.

0:12:580:13:01

But what I want you to do is imagine I've already done it.

0:13:010:13:05

So, imagine you can see the card,

0:13:050:13:07

you can actually visualise the card on the chain.

0:13:070:13:10

-What was the card?

-The three of hearts.

-The three of hearts, Gemma.

0:13:100:13:13

Watch - one, two, three.

0:13:130:13:18

I just wave and can you see?

0:13:180:13:20

Look, just rub the chain.

0:13:200:13:21

Can you see? That's gone right the way through the card.

0:13:210:13:25

Whoa! Let' get a rewind.

0:13:250:13:27

One, two, three.

0:13:270:13:31

Fergus just made the card they chose appear threaded on the chain.

0:13:310:13:35

That's amazing.

0:13:350:13:36

Through the card and actually, if I take the chain off and show the

0:13:360:13:41

camera, you can see that that has gone all the way through the card.

0:13:410:13:45

Have a look.

0:13:450:13:46

It's magic.

0:13:470:13:49

-Isn't that cool?

-Yeah.

-Marvellously cool.

0:13:490:13:52

All he hardly did was just wave it round the key chain

0:13:520:13:56

-and then after that it just vanished.

-Like magic.

0:13:560:14:01

That trick was the best trick I ever seen in magic history.

0:14:010:14:08

Wow. Well the quantity of the magic is exhausting

0:14:090:14:13

and the quality has been out of sight.

0:14:130:14:15

So far out of sight, it's making me squint.

0:14:150:14:18

So I feel like I've earned a sit down, but before I do,

0:14:190:14:22

let's have a look at what's coming up.

0:14:220:14:24

It's all kinds of ridiculousness.

0:14:240:14:26

Katherine reveals a secret in tricks of the trade.

0:14:270:14:30

Have you worked it out yet?

0:14:300:14:32

John's jumping coins are up close and magical.

0:14:320:14:36

And watch what happens

0:14:360:14:37

when Katherine goes undercover in another school.

0:14:370:14:40

Will she fool the class or will they realise

0:14:400:14:43

their supply teacher is still magic?

0:14:430:14:45

Isn't that clever?

0:14:450:14:46

Oh! Each week I'm bringing you

0:14:470:14:49

another of my new favourite magic movers and shakers,

0:14:490:14:53

doing tricks in their own cribs, yards and front rooms.

0:14:530:14:56

We call them the Wannabe Wizards.

0:14:560:14:59

So I've got my comfy chair.

0:14:590:15:01

I've got my computer thingy to watch them all on

0:15:010:15:04

and I've got my trendy Anglepoise.

0:15:040:15:07

Let's do this already.

0:15:080:15:09

We asked you to send in clips

0:15:110:15:13

of yourself performing your best magic tricks.

0:15:130:15:16

We received loads of clips from all over the country.

0:15:160:15:18

Each week I'll be choosing a favourite Wannabe Wizard

0:15:180:15:21

and showing them to you guys.

0:15:210:15:23

My Wannabe Wizard this time is Lewis from Lancashire

0:15:230:15:26

and he's the straight man in a magical double act.

0:15:260:15:29

Hello, everybody. I'm going to be doing a trick called The Wonder Rope.

0:15:290:15:32

But this isn't just any ordinary rope, it's a magic rope.

0:15:320:15:35

You see, if I just hold it this way and slide my hand across,

0:15:350:15:39

it stiffens all the way through, no matter where I hold it.

0:15:390:15:43

Now if I could just ask my assistant, Fido,

0:15:430:15:46

to come along and hold this for me, while I get the instructions.

0:15:460:15:49

Oh, you've broke it.

0:15:490:15:51

Haven't had it two minutes and you've broke it, Fido.

0:15:510:15:54

OK, I'll try again.

0:15:540:15:57

Oh, you're no use, Fido. Go.

0:15:570:15:59

All right, I'll give you one more chance.

0:16:000:16:03

OK, hold this while I get the instructions.

0:16:030:16:06

That's it, I've had it with you.

0:16:070:16:09

Fido, go! You trot along and get your dinner. Go.

0:16:090:16:13

OK, now I'll just show you how it's done.

0:16:130:16:15

You just hold the rope like that, slide across and there it is.

0:16:150:16:19

And that's The Wonder Rope.

0:16:190:16:20

Fido!

0:16:200:16:21

Magic.

0:16:230:16:24

It sure was and that's why Lewis is my Wannabe Wizard.

0:16:240:16:27

Now it's time for Katherine to reveal

0:16:290:16:31

the secret in Tricks Of The Trade.

0:16:310:16:33

With a plastic card balancing on the edge of a cup like this,

0:16:330:16:37

Katherine will show you how to balance the three coins

0:16:370:16:40

on the end of the card, without them falling off.

0:16:400:16:43

Come on, have you worked it out?

0:16:430:16:45

How many of you got it?

0:16:450:16:47

Does it work because Katherine has a steady hand?

0:16:470:16:52

No.

0:16:520:16:53

Is it about how far she put the coins on the card?

0:16:530:16:57

No.

0:16:570:16:59

Want to know how it's done?

0:16:590:17:00

Fill the cup with water,

0:17:010:17:03

right up to the brim.

0:17:030:17:04

When the water touches the card,

0:17:060:17:08

it makes something called surface tension.

0:17:080:17:11

This causes the card to stick

0:17:110:17:13

and allows you to put weight on the end of the card.

0:17:130:17:16

If you take it slowly, that is.

0:17:160:17:18

Katherine's being very careful.

0:17:180:17:20

OK, so that's the first one balancing on the card.

0:17:220:17:25

Now for the second.

0:17:250:17:26

There's two coins balancing.

0:17:270:17:29

No water spilt.

0:17:290:17:31

No wobble on the card.

0:17:310:17:33

Here comes the third.

0:17:330:17:36

Good skills, Katherine.

0:17:360:17:38

Did you get it?

0:17:380:17:39

Are you amazing already?

0:17:390:17:41

Now you've got something to impress all your friends with.

0:17:410:17:45

Next it's time for John, who's at a car museum,

0:17:450:17:48

getting up close and magical.

0:17:480:17:50

-Hi, girls, how are you?

-Good.

-Good.

-Amazing.

0:17:500:17:53

You're amazing, already?

0:17:530:17:54

When I show you this, you'll be even more than amazing.

0:17:540:17:57

I'm going to show you a trick using coins. Have a look.

0:17:570:17:59

Hold out your hand. You can have a look at these coins and, yes,

0:17:590:18:02

you can have a look at those coins. They're £2 coins.

0:18:020:18:05

I haven't got any other coins, no extra coins, just four coins.

0:18:050:18:08

Here's what's going to happen.

0:18:080:18:09

We're going to try and make money change hands.

0:18:090:18:12

Faye, would you help me with this?

0:18:120:18:14

I'll hold one coin, you take the other three.

0:18:140:18:16

John has one of the £2 coins.

0:18:160:18:18

Faye has the other three.

0:18:180:18:20

I throw it up in the air and it vanishes and it appears over here.

0:18:200:18:25

John made his coin jump from one hand to the next. A magical start.

0:18:250:18:29

Check that coin, make sure it's genuine. I'll take these.

0:18:290:18:32

You saw that one jump across, all right, you saw it jump across.

0:18:320:18:35

This next one you're going to hear jump across, all right?

0:18:350:18:39

So you'll actually hear the next one jump across.

0:18:390:18:42

Can you hold these coins again for me? Is that all right?

0:18:420:18:45

If I put them in your hand like this,

0:18:450:18:47

don't do anything with them yet, just hold them like that.

0:18:470:18:50

Can you give me that last coin?

0:18:500:18:51

Here's what I want you to do, Faye.

0:18:510:18:53

Can you very, very carefully, get your other hand

0:18:530:18:56

and just cup it over the coin like this?

0:18:560:18:58

John has one coin. Faye has the other three.

0:18:580:19:00

Then you're going to give the coins a shake for me.

0:19:000:19:03

Can you do that? Give them a shake.

0:19:030:19:05

Bit more, give them a nice good shake. That's it, now stop.

0:19:050:19:08

Did you hear the sound change?

0:19:080:19:09

I think one of the coins has vanished but don't look yet.

0:19:090:19:12

Listen to mine, see if we can make it arrive.

0:19:120:19:15

COINS JINGLE

0:19:150:19:16

Now I've got two and how many have you got?

0:19:170:19:19

You've got two as well.

0:19:190:19:21

It's pretty amazing so far.

0:19:210:19:23

Now listen, you've seen one jump across

0:19:230:19:26

and you've heard one jump across.

0:19:260:19:28

This time you're going to feel one jump across. OK?

0:19:280:19:32

We'll take all four coins.

0:19:320:19:33

Anna, would you help me with this one?

0:19:330:19:35

Can you hold your fingers like this for me? Excellent.

0:19:350:19:38

Maybe this hand. Wonderful.

0:19:380:19:39

I want you to hold those coins exactly the same way

0:19:390:19:42

that I'm holding mine. All right?

0:19:420:19:44

Exactly the same way, just like this by the edges.

0:19:440:19:46

That's it. Don't drop them just yet. I'm going to hold mine here.

0:19:460:19:49

Drop yours into your hand and I'll drop mine into my hand

0:19:490:19:52

and as soon as you drop them,

0:19:520:19:54

grab hold of them so I can't switch them.

0:19:540:19:56

Are you ready? One, two, three, go.

0:19:560:20:00

Now, did you feel anything?

0:20:000:20:02

Them drop into my hand?

0:20:020:20:05

Do you feel anything now? Have a little feel.

0:20:050:20:08

-Feels like one.

-It feels like one. I told you she'd feel it.

0:20:080:20:11

Open it up.

0:20:110:20:13

Now you've just got one coin and I didn't touch anything.

0:20:130:20:15

You dropped it in, and in my hand I've got three coins.

0:20:150:20:18

-Oh!

-That's pretty impressive but do you know what we'll do now?

0:20:180:20:21

You're actually going to get a chance to make it happen yourself.

0:20:210:20:24

Count them into your hand.

0:20:240:20:26

You've got one, two, three,

0:20:260:20:29

four coins. How many have I got?

0:20:290:20:31

-None.

-None. Excellent.

0:20:310:20:32

If I make those into a little pile like this,

0:20:320:20:34

here's what I want you to do for me.

0:20:340:20:36

I'll ask you in a moment to take one of those coins

0:20:360:20:38

and lift it and place it into my hand

0:20:380:20:41

and as soon as you place it into my hand, close your hand tight

0:20:410:20:44

so that there's no way I could sneak any coins back in there.

0:20:440:20:47

OK, can you do that now? Lift it in, onto my hand

0:20:470:20:50

then immediately close your hand tight.

0:20:500:20:52

Excellent. How many are in your hand?

0:20:520:20:54

-Three.

-How many are in my hand?

-One.

0:20:540:20:56

One. Excellent. Watch.

0:20:560:20:58

It vanishes.

0:20:580:21:00

Completely gone.

0:21:000:21:01

And how many have you got now in your hand?

0:21:010:21:04

-Four.

-Four.

0:21:040:21:06

Wow.

0:21:060:21:08

They're speechless.

0:21:080:21:09

I'm speechless.

0:21:090:21:11

John's speechless. I'm speechless.

0:21:110:21:14

He was just, like, making it vanish.

0:21:140:21:18

I had to place it into his hand and he just made it disappear

0:21:180:21:21

and jump into my hand.

0:21:210:21:23

I didn't, like, feel anything.

0:21:230:21:25

Amazing.

0:21:250:21:27

-Fantastic.

-Brilliant.

0:21:270:21:30

Did you see that? You didn't?

0:21:300:21:33

You need to watch slower next time.

0:21:330:21:36

Next up is Katherine, and guess what?

0:21:360:21:38

She's about to be a supply teacher to fool another class.

0:21:380:21:42

The disguise is on, the hidden cameras are set.

0:21:420:21:44

Enter Year Five.

0:21:460:21:47

They don't know it yet, but Katherine's about to take

0:21:470:21:50

a magical lesson about water that's very fishy.

0:21:500:21:53

None of them have recognised Katherine in her disguise or

0:21:530:21:56

noticed the hidden cameras in their classroom.

0:21:560:21:58

But will they be able to hide their excitement once the magic begins?

0:21:580:22:02

-Hello, everyone. CLASS:

-Hello.

0:22:020:22:04

My name is Miss Goldstone

0:22:050:22:07

and I'm going to be taking your class today, so we're going to be

0:22:070:22:10

doing a bit of science and a bit of geography mixed together.

0:22:100:22:13

We're learning all about water purification.

0:22:130:22:17

Now, I've got a bowl of water here on the table

0:22:170:22:20

and this is going to represent the water that we buy in a supermarket.

0:22:200:22:24

Watch that bowl of clear water very closely.

0:22:240:22:27

That's where the magic's going to happen.

0:22:270:22:29

Depending on where this water comes from,

0:22:290:22:31

it has to go through different purification processes to make

0:22:310:22:34

it clean enough for us to drink.

0:22:340:22:36

Not many people realise this, but a lot of our water starts off

0:22:360:22:40

very dark and dirty and contaminated.

0:22:400:22:44

How did that happen?

0:22:440:22:46

She's turned it from clear water to dirty water right before their eyes.

0:22:460:22:50

And depending on where that water's come from,

0:22:500:22:53

it has different chemical elements in it.

0:22:530:22:55

Katherine's started to muddy the waters of this lesson

0:22:550:22:58

but they still don't suspect a thing.

0:22:580:23:00

For example, our purified water often comes from lakes,

0:23:000:23:04

it comes from rivers and wetlands,

0:23:040:23:06

and you can find something called magnesium in it.

0:23:060:23:09

Now, magnesium is a chemical element and I've got some red sand here

0:23:090:23:13

and this is going to represent the magnesium.

0:23:130:23:17

OK? So we're going to put this into our water.

0:23:180:23:22

So she's poured the red sand into the bowl

0:23:220:23:24

and it's dissolved into the dirty water.

0:23:240:23:27

There we go.

0:23:270:23:30

Now, another chemical element that's found is iron

0:23:300:23:33

and I've got some yellow sand here to represent the iron.

0:23:330:23:38

So again, this is going to go into our water.

0:23:380:23:40

There you go. And again we're going to mix that in.

0:23:420:23:44

Now the yellow sand has been added to the dirt in that water.

0:23:440:23:48

There we go. And finally, I've got some blue sand here.

0:23:480:23:53

Now this blue sand represents the chlorine that's found in the water.

0:23:530:23:56

OK, so this is going to go in as well.

0:23:560:23:58

Like that and again it's all mixed up together.

0:24:000:24:02

Katherine's added the blue sand to the water and that's dissolved too.

0:24:020:24:06

The magic's about to happen. Keep your eyes on that bowl.

0:24:060:24:09

As I said, all these chemical elements are dissolved

0:24:090:24:13

into the water, so, for the water to be safe for us to drink,

0:24:130:24:17

we need to take all these chemical elements out.

0:24:170:24:19

They're with you, Katherine, they totally believe you're a teacher.

0:24:190:24:23

Now reel them in with the magic.

0:24:230:24:24

There are a lot of different processes that we can use for that.

0:24:240:24:27

One of the processes is called a pressure filter system.

0:24:270:24:31

This is when all the water is put into a big tank

0:24:310:24:35

and put under pressure and squeezed through a filter.

0:24:350:24:38

There's nothing in her hands or up her sleeves.

0:24:380:24:41

This is often used to remove magnesium

0:24:410:24:43

and it's actually brought back to its solid form like that.

0:24:430:24:50

She's pulled the red sand right out of the water and it's dry.

0:24:500:24:53

Isn't that clever?

0:24:530:24:56

Now, another process that's quite often used is something

0:24:560:24:59

called a slow sand system.

0:24:590:25:02

Now, this can take a long time,

0:25:020:25:04

it can take up to ten days for the water to pass through the sand.

0:25:040:25:07

But this is used a lot...

0:25:070:25:08

..to take out the iron.

0:25:100:25:12

Now she's pulled out the yellow sand and it's dry.

0:25:160:25:20

The class can't believe it and there's more where that came from.

0:25:200:25:24

And now the final process that's used is boiling the water.

0:25:240:25:28

Now, when we boil the water, it actually separates the contaminated

0:25:280:25:33

water with the pure water and allows us to take out all the chlorine.

0:25:330:25:39

It's been purified by some pure magic.

0:25:390:25:42

Like that.

0:25:420:25:43

Now just remember, everybody, that was just a demonstration of how

0:25:440:25:49

you purify water, so I don't want you trying to purify puddles outside

0:25:490:25:53

or your bathwater at home, so you can turn it into drinking water.

0:25:530:25:56

That does give you some idea about how our water

0:25:560:26:00

comes from the source and into the bottles of water that we drink.

0:26:000:26:03

The water's dirty and now it's time for Katherine to come clean.

0:26:030:26:08

So, would you all like to know a secret?

0:26:080:26:12

-CLASS:

-Yes.

0:26:120:26:14

Yeah?

0:26:140:26:15

What you just saw then, that wasn't really just a water demonstration,

0:26:150:26:20

that was actually a magic trick, because I'm not

0:26:200:26:24

a teacher, I'm a magician and all of you have been set up by your

0:26:240:26:28

parents and your teachers and you're all being filmed right now.

0:26:280:26:33

There's a camera over there and there's a camera over there,

0:26:330:26:36

and there's a camera over there, cos you're all going to be on

0:26:360:26:39

Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic.

0:26:390:26:41

CHEERING

0:26:410:26:43

Katherine's trick with sand used sleight of hand

0:26:430:26:46

and it deceived my eyes.

0:26:460:26:47

But how did the class see it?

0:26:470:26:50

At first I was, like, really confused cos

0:26:500:26:53

in my mind, I was like, "How could she do that?"

0:26:530:26:56

-Just don't know what happened there.

-Yeah.

-Wow.

0:26:560:26:59

Can't believe it.

0:26:590:27:01

They couldn't believe it because the coloured sands

0:27:010:27:03

disappeared into the water, but all came out dry.

0:27:030:27:07

All the chlorine.

0:27:070:27:09

That was weird because you can't do that

0:27:090:27:12

because it all dissolves in the water.

0:27:120:27:14

An incredible trick and this class didn't realise...

0:27:140:27:22

See you later, but until then, if you're at school and you think

0:27:270:27:31

something magical is occurring, maybe you'll find yourself shouting,

0:27:310:27:35

"Help! My Supply Teacher Is Still Magic!"
