Episode 15 Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic

It's a brand new term

and CBBC has sent these four magicians back to school.

They're some of the hottest magicians in the country.

And when they're not in your classrooms,

they're out in public, thrilling families.

Catherine's going to set you a magical challenge

in Tricks Of The Trade.

Catherine will show you how to spin this

glass of juice around turning it upside down without spilling a drop.

Can you work out how to do it?

It's going to be incredible.

Now Fergus is at a theme park getting up close and magical.

-Right, boys, do you know what an autograph is?

-Yeah.

-Yeah?

It's when you get a signature from a famous person.

Now, I collect them on these cards, but you can see at the moment,

I don't have any autographs.

What I'd like you to do, Joseph, is to take one of these out,

and I'd like you to be the very first autograph in my collection.

-Does that sound good?

-Yeah.

So then scribble your autograph, or your name, across that card.

Lovely jubbly.

And then if you can just hold it up to that camera there,

and that's perfect. Good.

Now, obviously, when I start collecting a lot of these autographs,

going through and looking for particular ones becomes difficult.

Here's what's incredible. Watch your card.

If I put your card halfway down amongst the others,

all I have to do to get it back is say your name. Joseph.

And look, it comes back up to the top.

-How did he do that?!

-Watch it again.

This time, it's going to stay face up.

It'll go about two thirds of the way down in the deck.

You're going to see the moment the ink rises.

At the moment, nothing.

-That top card is black.

-When I count down from three, say Joseph.

-Three, two, one.

-Joseph!

-Look! Oh, my gosh!

Wow.

When I get lots of these autographs,

sometimes I have to get rid of signatures I don't want,

and I can do that by rubbing.

He made Joseph's signature vanish, but how?

I like Joseph and I like your signature, so I want that back.

-What do you see there?

-Blank.

It's blank on the front and back.

This trick is going to be great, unless Fergus blows it.

-He did blow it!

-And blow - look what comes back.

They can't believe it! But it's going to get even better.

Now, Ned, what I'd like you to do is hold your right hand out for me,

and I'd like you to put your left hand on top of your right hand

and look after Joseph's card.

Don't let Joseph's card go.

Now, I'm going to sign my autograph on a card. Is that OK with you three?

-What do you see there?

-Nothing.

-Nothing. What do you see there?

-Nothing.

-Blank and blank.

So, if I take the pen,

I'm going to put my autograph across the back of this card.

-Here we go.

-So Fergus has his own autograph and they've got Joseph's.

So I've got my autograph card. Whose autograph card have you got?

-Joseph's.

-Joseph's. Very good.

If I pick up Joseph's autograph card and mine, watch this.

Does the ink move there?

Rub it for yourself, Joseph.

It doesn't move, does it?

When I collect, maybe over the course of a year,

loads and loads of autographs, it's better to not have them

on two separate cards, but drag one off one of the cards

and put them both together for ever with Joseph on the one card.

And just look at that! A great trick signed and sealed.

Now it's time for Catherine to reveal

the secret in Tricks Of The Trade.

Catherine will show you how to spin this glass around,

turning it upside down, without spilling a drop of liquid.

Can you work it out? How many of you got it?

Maybe you think it works by freezing the liquid.

Nah. This is simple but very impressive.

All you do is hold the mouth of the glass

and spin it 360 degrees in one movement and without hesitating.

Something called inertia keeps the liquid in the glass,

and keeps you and your friends from getting wet.

If you try it, please go outside and use water instead of juice,

or else your friends may not thank you for it. Did you get it?
