Are you ready to make some healthy snacks

for the surprise party at the hospital?

-ALL: Yes!

-Brilliant.

I've found some lovely ingredients we can use,

so let's have a look in my cookbook and see if we can find a recipe.

Quick, quick! What's in my cookbook?

Let's have a look.

What tasty treats are we going to cook?

Ooh! Look at those. We are going to make funky beet muffins today.

And our friends at the hospital are going to love these.

But before we start cooking,

-what have we got to do first?

-ALL: Wash our hands!

Wash our hands. Come on, everyone.

# Roll up your sleeves

# Give your hands a wash with slippy-dippy soap

# Splish splash splosh

# Have you done your hands?

# Washed and dried

# Sleeves rolled up

# Apron tied

# What can you do? I can cook! #

Well, we've washed our hands, so let's get started.

The first thing we do to make our funky beetroot muffins

is crack an egg. Now, an egg like this comes from a dinosaur.

ALL: No, a chicken!

-Yes, it does!

-Chicken! KATY LAUGHS

Silly Katy, I'm joking! It comes from a chicken.

So, grab your egg, and we're going to open it up,

and I'll show you how.

We go, knock, knock, knock, to make a little crack,

then you use your thumbs to open it up, like this. Whoop!

There we go. So, knock, knock, knock...

And then you go, whoop!

Brilliant, team, you did that perfectly!

Next, everyone, we're going to add the lovely, juicy orange juice.

So, splosh that in, after three. One, two, three, splosh!

And now, everyone, give everything a really good mix.

So take your fork, and off you go.

-Oh, mine's going like a yellow bubble bath.

-Mine is, too.

Can you whisk, too? I knew you could.

Right, grab your bowl, that's it. Have you got your fork?

And then go, whisk, whisk, whisk!

Excellent! Keep going, everyone.

When it's all whisked up, you can stop.

We're going to call this bowl our wet bowl,

and we're just going to pop it to one side, for now.

-Now, does everybody know what this is?

-Beetroot.

That's right, it's beetroot. And do you know

if beetroot grows above the ground, or below the ground?

Below!

Below, that's right, because it's a root vegetable.

And it's going to give our muffins such an amazing red colour.

You can use fresh beetroot, but we're going to use cooked beetroot.

We'll grate the beetroot in pairs, OK?

So, pop the beetroot into the top of your grater, like this.

And the other person push down on the top, like that,

and the other person turn the handle.

Out it comes. Oh, wow! Look at it coming out of the grater!

We got a bit!

And if any of it gets stuck,

use your fork to scrape it out, like this.

And once you've done your beetroot,

just pop it in your wet bowl. Ha-ha!

And now it's time to give everything a really good mix,

so off you go, everyone.

That looks fantastic!

OK, everyone, stop mixing and pop your wet bowl to one side.

Next, we're going to take a bowl of flour,

and add to it something called baking powder.

-Now, who wants to know a secret?

-Yes!

-Do YOU want to know a secret?

OK, everyone say, ssh!

Baking powder is magic. It is.

Because when you put baking powder in a recipe,

it magically makes everything rise up, like this.

Whoop! Ha-ha! Why don't you pretend to rise up with us?

Ready, everyone? Get down low... Whoop!

All right, everyone, just add a teaspoon of baking powder

to our flour.

Take a teaspoon and just sprinkle it

into your bowl. Sprinkle, sprinkle.

Next, we're going to add some lovely seeds.

-Now, do you know what kind of seeds these are?

-Sunflower!

Sunflower seeds! Come on, sprinkle them in, too. There we go.

And then, finally, we're going to add something called mixed spice.

And mixed spice has got a really lovely smell.

Why don't you all have a smell and tell me what you think?

-Josie, what do you think?

-Ginger.

-It smells like ginger,

because it's actually got ginger in it. It's lovely.

We're not going to add all of this, just a teaspoon.

So grab your teaspoons. Load it up and pop it into your bowl.

There we go. And because the ingredients in this bowl are dry,

we'll call it our dry bowl.

And the next thing we want to do

is add the wet bowl to the dry bowl,

and this is my very favourite part.

So grab your wet bowl and, after three,

we're going to put it into the bowl with a big splosh. Ready?

One, two, three, splosh!

-ALL: Splosh!

-Woo hoo!

I've got some beetroot left over -

I'll just use a spoon to scrape it out.

And then, I'm going to give everything

a really, really good mix,

so off you go... That's it.

It looks beautiful. It's going a lovely pink colour.

Where's the flour gone?

-Hiding!

-It's hiding!

And once everything's really well mixed together,

we're going to play the Two Spoon Game.

And I'll show you how to do it. You scoop up the mixture

and then you use the other spoon to slide it off into your muffin tin.

Slide. So, scoop and slide.

All right, everyone, off you go. Scoop and slide. Scoop and slide.

Scoop and slide!

So that's it, guys, you've done it.

You have made your funky beet muffins,

and you've done it all by yourselves.

And all we've got to do now is pop these in the oven to cook.

Josie, these look amazing.

Now, remember, the oven is hot, so don't go near.

You need to ask a grown-up to help you here.

Now, we can't have a party without any party decorations, can we?

-But I wonder where my friend is, to help me make them!

-Oh, very nice.

Look, everyone, it's Mr Maker!

ALL: Hello, Mr Maker!

Whilst the muffins are in the oven, cooking,

why don't you go and see Mr Maker? I'll see you in a bit.

Hello, everyone! Ha-ha!

We need to make some decorations. Do you know what we can make?

Some decorations, eh? I've just had a great idea!

Let's make some foil fruit decorations.

But first, we'll need somewhere to make them!

CHILDREN: Wow!

Come on, let's make it! Come on! Come on!

CHILDREN GIGGLE

OK, my friends, are you ready to start making?

ALL: Yes!

Brilliant! Are YOU ready?

Fantastic! Let's make some foil fruit decorations.

And to do that, we will need some kitchen foil, yellow tissue paper,

some gloopy glue, some sticky tape, a pen and a paintbrush,

a glue stick, some googly eyes and a small piece of ribbon.

Now, the first thing we're going to do is take some foil. There we are.

That's it. And then, open it up onto the table.

Now we're going to take a piece of ribbon and make a loop

and stick it to the top of the foil.

Now, this can be a little bit fiddly, so you might want to help each other.

-Me too!

-Have you done it, Josie?

-Yes!

-Well done!

Now we need to scrunch up the foil

into the shape of the fruit that we want to make.

And today, we're going to make bananas!

And remember to keep the loop at the top,

because that's how we're going to hang it up later.

Keep scrunching, but don't squeeze it too tightly,

because we want to see the shape of the banana.

-Is yours a banana yet?

-Nearly.

When you've finished, hold up your bananas. There we are.

Good work, mini-Makers! And now, we need to colour in our bananas.

Now, what colour are bananas?

ALL: Yellow!

That's right. So let's use some yellow tissue paper.

Now, we need to tear this tissue paper into very small pieces,

and put them in the bowl.

-Perfect!

-I did that.

-One last piece, there.

Pick up your bananas, everybody,

and we're going to cover the banana in gloopy glue.

Use a brush for this. That's it.

Cover the whole thing.

Well done, very good.

OK, everyone, put your brushes down into the bowls, and now,

we're going to start sticking on tissue paper.

That's it, mini-Makers, just push on the paper like that.

And our banana will start to take shape.

This is a bit sticky, isn't it?

CHILDREN: Yes!

We're going to cover the whole thing now, aren't we?

CHILDREN: Finished!

-Are you all finished?

-Yes.

And now, we need to leave this to dry.

It can take quite a while,

but today, we're going to use some Maker magic!

Ho-ho! There we are, nice and dry.

And now, we can finish off our bananas by using a brown pen

to add some extra detail. Here we go.

Lots and lots of wiggly lines.

Ha-ha! And now, for a finishing touch, let's add some googly eyes.

Use your glue stick and put a little bit of glue

on the googly eyes, first.

Then hold your banana in one hand, and then stick it on to your banana.

We have one very funny-looking finished banana! Ha-ha!

Well done, everyone. There we are.

We've made a funny, foil fruit decoration,

and there are some other ideas you could try, too.

How about this juicy orange, made with orange tissue paper

and stickers?

Or how about this tasty apple, made with a pipecleaner stalk

and cardboard leaves?

Or you could try these delicious strawberries,

-with paint blobs for seeds, and leaves made of felt.

-Oh, wow!

These muffins look amazing. I'd better tell everyone they're ready.

-Everyone, the muffins are ready! Come and get them!

-Ha-ha!
