-Yes, and we're going to have a picnic.

I've got a fantastic recipe for us to cook together.

Follow me, and I'll show you.

-Welcome to my outdoor kitchen. Who's ready to do some cooking?

-ALL: Me!

-Do you want to see what we're going to cook today?

OK, I'll show you. It's under here. Today's recipe is spiced fun buns!

-Yum!

-They smell good. Mmm!

But before we cook them, we have to do something really important.

-Do you know what it is?

-ALL: Wash our hands.

That's right, we've got to wash our hands. Come on, team.

Right, let's get started.

To make our spiced fun buns,

we're going to need three spoonfuls of currents,

two spoonfuls of caster sugar and one spoonful of fruit peel.

So that is three, two, one, blast off!

OK, let's get measuring then.

-One... Do we go up to three?

-Yes.

Two.

Three.

One, two... OK, let's get one spoonful of fruit peel.

-Here we go.

-One.

-Finished!

-Now that we've got everything in our bowl,

we're going to give it a good mix and you can join in at home too.

Just get your bowl and your spoon

and give everything a really good mix like this.

Mix, mix, mix. There we go.

Let's call this our fruity bowl and for the fruity bowl,

we're going to do the fruity dance.

Who can do the fruity dance, like this?

Fruity, fruity, fruity, fruity, fruity!

Can you do the fruity dance with us?

Next, we're going to do some more measuring, but this time,

we get to play with the scales.

This weight weighs as much as the flour we need,

which we're going to put on the other side.

So when this red pointy thing points to the middle,

that's when the two sides are balanced.

What ingredient do we need next in our spiced fun buns?

What is next? Well, let's see if you can guess what it could be.

So, we've got some raspberries,

a loaf of brown bread, and some of mixed spice.

What would you choose for our spiced fun buns?

I'll give you some clues and you can guess what you think it might be.

The special ingredient is brown.

Well, raspberries are red, so we can take that one away.

OK, here's another clue.

The special ingredient is brown and it's a powder.

Well, brown bread isn't a powder, so we can take that one away too.

Which leaves us with mixed spice.

We're going to use mixed spice in our spiced fun buns

and I went to find some.

I've come to Alderley in Gloucestershire

to find out what goes into mixed spice.

Come on, let's go and have a look.

I'm here with Becky, who's a flavourist.

Becky's going to tell me what different spices are in mixed spice.

This is coriander from India.

We also have fennel, which comes from India.

This is cinnamon and this comes from China.

-They're like little wooden sticks!

-The ginger comes from Africa.

It's like white seaweed.

This is nutmeg and it's from the Caribbean.

And we have cloves that come from Indonesia.

They smell really strong! Actually, they smell a bit like Christmas.

And now we just need to use this, which is called a pestle and mortar.

All of these ingredients are ground up.

Look at all the colours mixing together.

And there we have it, a lovely mixed spice.

-Shall be put it in the bag now, Becky?

-We can.

It smells absolutely fantastic. Great.

This mixed spice is going to taste delicious in our spiced fun buns.

Those spices smelt amazing. So let's take a pinch of mixed spice.

Then sprinkle it into this bowl with the flour in it. That's it.

Bring your flour bowl into the middle of your mats,

because next, we're going to use some butter.

Scoop the butter out of the bowl.

It's all sticky! Now, this is how you do tickling.

First of all, you need your tickle fingers.

So put your fingers like this and go, tickle, tickle, tickle.

And we put our tickle fingers into the bowl.

So we dive in like this. Whoa!

Get right down to the bottom and give everything a good squeeze.

Squeeze really hard with your fingers and then rub the butter

and the flour and the mixed spice together with your fingertips.

-It's all slimy!

-Everyone go, tickle, tickle, tickle.

ALL: Tickle, Tickle, tickle.

Oh my goodness! Look at my hands!

-Look at my hands!

-We look like monsters!

Who has got monster hands?

Hold your hands out in front of you. This is really fun.

I love this part. Ready, go!

And then give your hands a wipe quickly.

Next, we're going to add our fruity mixture into our crumbly mixture.

One, two, three, whoosh!

Let's put this bowl to the side

because we need to bring over this cup

which has an egg that I've already cracked for you.

We're going to whisk it up. Let's get whisking!

Great. Now, the next part of the recipe is a secret.

Everyone go, shh.

Now, the secret is that we use some, but not all, of the eggy mixture.

-Can you say that?

-ALL: Some, but not all.

-That's it. Do you know why?

-Why?

Because that's what's going to make our spiced fun buns

really crumbly and bumpy and really delicious.

So bring back your mixture.

Ready, pour.

And stop. And then use your fork to mix it all up.

So let's get mixing, team.

The next thing we have to do is get really messy.

-Are you ready to get messy?

-ALL: Yes!

-I thought so.

Take your fork out of your bowl and put it on the side

and get your fingers right into the bowl

and into the mixture and make it into a big ball.

We're going to make this one ball into eight spiced fun buns

and I'll show you how.

First of all, we split this one into two pieces.

There we go. Put that on the mat.

And then we split both of these two into two.

And then we split each one of these into another two pieces.

My fingers are so sticky. So now, we have got eight.

Once you've made eight, you can put them on to a baking tray.

I don't have... Yes, I do. There we go.

Ollie, yours look like fluffy clouds with little black spots.

And that is it. You did it!

You put all the ingredients together all by yourself.

-Well done! Everyone say, yeah!

-ALL: Yeah!

Now I'm going to put them in the oven for you. There we go.

But remember, ovens are hot, so don't go near.
