Here we are at the seaside and hopefully I'm going

to find Billy and a lighthouse around here somewhere.

Ah, Where... There he is! Hi, Billy!

-Yes, and we're going to have a picnic by it.

I have got a delicious recipe to cook, do you want to make it?

Welcome to my outdoor kitchen, everyone.

Do you want to know what we're going to cook today?

TOGETHER: Yes.

I'll show you. Today's recipe is...

Fruit jumble!

TOGETHER: Mmm!

Delicious, huh? But before we get started on the cooking,

we've got to do something really, really important.

Do you know what it is?

ALL: Wash your hands!

Got it, we've got to wash our hands, of course.

Come on, everyone, let's get going.

Right, let's get started on our fruit jumble.

The first ingredient we need is some plums.

Plums can come in all different shapes and sizes but the ones

we're got here are small and round like little bouncing balls.

-What colour are they, Ivy?

-Red.

-Lovely red colour.

-I wonder what colour they are inside, shall we find out?

-Yes!

To do that we're going to use a table knife.

Some knives can be sharp, can't they, team?

-So you do have to be very...

-Careful!

But a table knife is the kind of knife you're used to using at home,

so it's fine to use. We'll move these two to the side,

and we're going to hold the plum like this, and put the knife into it

until we hit the stone.

Then we're going to walk the knife around the plum, there we go.

Round there, like that. There we go.

Like going around the world?

Yes, we're going to cut around it like it's a plum planet.

THEY GIGGLE

Keep your plums on the mat, cut through till you can feel the stone.

-Yes, I can feel it.

-I got it!

-Take it all the way round,

you should have a line all the way round your plum.

Next, we're going to twist the plum but we do the twist, like this!

Do the twist, we do the twist.

We do the twist, we do the twist!

Fantastic, now we're going to do the twist with the plum.

To do that, we need to hold the plum and we twist it like this.

You can do it, keep going, you're nearly there!

-Yes!

-Yeah!

Next, we need to cut both of these halves into two more pieces,

so put them down there, like that, and then we cut the plum down

the middle, like that, until they look like two little ladybird wings.

Then we are going to cut the other one, as well.

Cut around the stone and then we twist it apart, like this.

There we go, Now we need to dig our fingers under this stone here

and twist it out.

There it is. All right, let's carry on with the other two plums.

Look at these plums, they are so red inside.

We need to take these plums and put them into our dish.

-I've got a lot on my hands.

-I look like I've got monster hands!

Me, too.

Shall we give our hands a wipe? OK, ready for the next part?

-Yes.

-The next step is to add some orange juice to our plums.

This is going to make a really lovely, fruity sauce.

Can you do the fruity dance, like this?

Fruity, fruity, fruity, fruity fruity, fruity, fruity, fruity!

You're a good fruity dancer. I think it's about time

we added some fruity juice to our fruity plums.

We need to measure out one tablespoon of orange juice

so we put the spoon into the cup and we tip a load to fill it up.

We put one in there, like that.

And that's all the orange juice you need.

Next we're going to add a tablespoonful

of yummy, runny honey. I love honey.

Bring the jar over to the dish, and drizzle it all over the plums.

Look at that. Everyone go, drizzle, drizzle, drizzle.

Drizzle, drizzle, drizzle.

When you've done that we want to mix the plums with the honey

and the orange juice. Mix, mix, mix, and you can mix with us as well.

You can get your dish and spoon and go, mix, mix, mix!

Now that's the fruity part of our recipe done,

I wonder what ingredient we are going to need next in our recipe?

What's next? Well, let us see, if you can guess what it could be.

So, we've got some bread,

some ham,

and a glass of milk.

What would you use for our fruit jumble?

I'll give you some clues and you can try and guess what it might be.

The special ingredient is something that you can slice.

You can't slice a glass of milk, can you?

So we can take that one away. There we go.

Here's another clue for you.

The special ingredient is something we can slice

but also something we can make into toast.

Well, you can slice ham but you can't make ham into toast, can you?

I've never done that before.

Let's take that one away as well, which leaves us with bread.

We're going to need some lovely bread

for our fruit jumble and I went to find some.

HORN BEEPS

I've come to Newcastle to meet my friend, Ian the Baker,

who is going to tell me how bread is made.

-You've got flour, sour dough, yeast, salt and water.

-Uh-huh.

And we mix them together.

Once it's been really well mixed,

Ian kneads it to spread the yeast and make it all stick together.

And when you've go the dough really tight, you elongate it,

roll it out like that, and then we put it into the bread tins.

Our dough has been put into this big warm room called the prover,

and the yeast has made the dough rise up.

Then it just goes into the oven to bake for about 45 minutes.

What do we do with the bread now that it has cooled down, Ian?

What we've got to do is slice it.

Wow, this bread is going to be perfect for our fruit jumble.

-Thanks very much, Ian.

-Pleasure.

I love the smell of freshly baked bread.

So we've got one slice of bread here, and we are going to cut it.

-So is everyone ready to do some more cutting?

-Yes.

-Yes.

OK. So, put your hand on one side of the bread

and use your table knife to cut a line down this, like that,

if you can't cut through the crusts, that's OK,

as you can just pare them with your fingers.

Put the piece of bread back together, like it's one piece,

and then we're going to turn the whole slice of bread

upside down, like this. Look at that.

Then we are going to cut it again, so put your hand there

and then cut, cut, cut, and if you don't cut all the way

through the crust we just give it a little rip.

Now we need to do two slices the other way,

so we turn the bread round, like that, and then cut down that side.

Then move your hand over a little bit further,

and cut down a bit more.

It doesn't matter if they're not perfect.

Are we all ready for the next part?

ALL: Yes!

Now we are going to put all of our bread pieces into this butter

-that I've already melted for you.

-I've got lots.

-And then bring your bowl over to you, on your mat.

-Yeah.

Now we're going to get really messy!

ALL: Let's get messy!

Everyone, put your hands in the melted butter

with the bread and get them all buttery.

Jake, what's the bread doing to the butter?

It's getting sticked on.

It's sucking it all up like a sponge, isn't it?

It's going like this.

SHE SLURPS

Everyone, who can do a big slurp? Ready?

THEY SLURP

-I can't even do it.

-You can, do that again.

HE PUFFS

-Ha-ha, so, Neelie, what colour has the bread gone?

-Yellow.

That's right, it has.

Next, we are going to take some of this lovely sugar,

but it's not the normal kind of sugar you might be used to.

It's called Demerara sugar and we're going to use some but not all.

So make sure you leave a little bit of sugar in your bowls for later on.

Now, we need to put all this lovely bread on top of our plums.

-Oh, look at that. It's like burying treasure.

-Yeah, you're right.

Last of all, we're going to take the rest of the Demerara sugar

and sprinkle it on top of the bread. Ready? Sprinkle, sprinkle, sprinkle.

-All done.

-Finished!

-Finished.

-Finished.

And that is it. You did it, everyone.

You put all of the ingredients together for your fruit jumble

and you did it all by yourself.

Now it's time to put them in the oven.

But remember, ovens are hot,

so don't go near, ask a grown-up to help you here.
