Coming up on Junior Vets...

0:00:020:00:04

Lonely pony Brie faces tests for a life-threatening illness.

0:00:040:00:08

A rackety racoon undergoes delicate surgery.

0:00:080:00:12

And what's wrong with Ronnie's sore leg?

0:00:120:00:15

When pets are poorly,

0:00:210:00:22

wildlife gets wounded or farm animals feel unwell,

0:00:220:00:25

they need top vet help.

0:00:250:00:28

The really lucky ones come here,

0:00:280:00:31

to Edinburgh University's amazing, super high-tech Vet School.

0:00:310:00:34

And now six kids, chosen from 1,000,

0:00:410:00:43

have become the first ever children allowed to enrol here...

0:00:430:00:47

I'm all ready.

0:00:490:00:50

..and work alongside the school's top vets.

0:00:500:00:54

Who wants to take this cow's urine?

0:00:540:00:56

They're facing an intense training programme...

0:00:560:01:00

-Have you done...?

-What is this? What's that?

0:01:000:01:02

..and they're being pushed to the limit at animal hospitals,

0:01:020:01:06

vet practices,

0:01:060:01:07

wildlife parks and working farms.

0:01:070:01:10

I'm Paul Manktelow. It took me five hard years to train to be a vet,

0:01:100:01:15

but this lot have only weeks to show me what they're made of.

0:01:150:01:20

My Junior Vets have hardly been around animals before.

0:01:200:01:23

That's so cool.

0:01:230:01:25

Now they are facing real, heavy-duty vet work.

0:01:250:01:28

It's like everything's just so bonkers!

0:01:280:01:32

That is amazing.

0:01:340:01:35

Have they got the stomach to succeed?

0:01:350:01:38

I feel like a real vet.

0:01:380:01:41

And can they stay calm under extreme pressure?

0:01:410:01:44

LAUGHTER

0:01:440:01:45

Six raw recruits...

0:01:470:01:48

I can only choose...

0:01:520:01:54

..one winner.

0:01:540:01:56

The first ever Junior Vet

0:01:560:01:58

to win the prestigious Head Vet title...

0:01:580:02:02

is...

0:02:020:02:03

I'm in the heart of the Vet School Hospital,

0:02:190:02:21

where top vets of the future are training to save animals' lives.

0:02:210:02:25

This is where my recruits will face the challenge of a lifetime

0:02:250:02:28

and I'll be with them every step of the way.

0:02:280:02:31

Each of my Junior Vets is here for a very different reason.

0:02:310:02:35

Birmingham based Saira's priority is to tackle her fear of big dogs.

0:02:380:02:43

I really, really want to overcome my fear of dogs,

0:02:430:02:46

because I've had a bad experience with them in the past.

0:02:460:02:49

Leeds lad Will is hoping to make it as a DJ when he's older,

0:02:490:02:53

but he's also interested in becoming a zoo vet.

0:02:530:02:56

An amazing opportunity to have, because like, everybody gets to see

0:02:560:02:59

what they could be doing in the future.

0:02:590:03:02

There's no pets allowed at Amblessed's home in London,

0:03:020:03:05

so she's looking forward to getting close-up contact

0:03:050:03:08

with all kinds of creatures.

0:03:080:03:10

The closest I've ever got to animals

0:03:100:03:12

is if I go to someone's house and they've got a pet.

0:03:120:03:15

Bolton boy Sam is hoping Vet School will help him decide

0:03:160:03:19

if he should become a doctor or a vet.

0:03:190:03:22

I'm here to prove to myself that I can cut it as a surgeon.

0:03:220:03:26

West Midlands girl Lauren already volunteers at her local vets

0:03:260:03:31

and has her eye firmly set on my Head Vet title.

0:03:310:03:34

When I'm older, I want to become a vet,

0:03:340:03:37

just because I want to help as many animals as I possibly can.

0:03:370:03:41

Morgan is also a massive animal fan,

0:03:420:03:45

but can the West Yorkshire lad prove to Mum

0:03:450:03:47

he's responsible enough to have a pet of his own?

0:03:470:03:50

I'm not allowed a pet at home,

0:03:500:03:51

but hopefully, this will change everything.

0:03:510:03:53

Day one...

0:03:590:04:02

..my new Junior Vets have just arrived from all over the UK

0:04:020:04:05

and they're going to find out what real vet work is all about.

0:04:050:04:10

Welcome to Vet School

0:04:110:04:12

and a massive congratulations for making it this far.

0:04:120:04:16

Now, stay focussed, work hard

0:04:160:04:18

and you'll make it through the tough weeks ahead.

0:04:180:04:21

More importantly, you will get to help save animals' lives

0:04:210:04:25

so...Lauren and Morgan...

0:04:250:04:28

..Sam and Saira,

0:04:290:04:33

Will and Amblessed...

0:04:330:04:34

..let's get down to business.

0:04:340:04:36

My Junior Vets will be working in pairs to help pets,

0:04:380:04:41

farm animals and all sorts of unusual and exotic creatures.

0:04:410:04:46

It might be my new recruits' first day at Vet School,

0:04:460:04:49

but all of them are facing tricky assignments

0:04:490:04:51

and I'll be getting regular progress reports.

0:04:510:04:55

Only the very best Junior Vets will win today's Vital Vet Work award,

0:04:550:04:59

that will help me decide who will be named Head Vet.

0:04:590:05:02

Tower Farm Riding Stables is home to 65 horses and ponies

0:05:100:05:13

who all work and live happily together.

0:05:130:05:17

New recruit Brie has just arrived here,

0:05:170:05:20

but at the moment, she's all on her own.

0:05:200:05:23

Brie has been kept apart from the other ponies,

0:05:240:05:26

in case she has a highly infectious disease called strangles.

0:05:260:05:30

New Junior Vets Sam and Saira

0:05:320:05:33

are teaming up with horse expert and equine vet Matt Hanks,

0:05:330:05:36

to carry out Brie's test.

0:05:360:05:38

First up, we get into protective clothing

0:05:380:05:41

so we don't spread diseases around the riding school.

0:05:410:05:44

I feel like a marshmallow,

0:05:440:05:47

like a snowman, like an astronaut.

0:05:470:05:49

When I found out my first animal was a pony,

0:05:490:05:51

I was like, quite happy, but then I was a little bit wary as well,

0:05:510:05:56

cos I was thinking, "Oh, gosh,

0:05:560:05:58

"I wonder how this is going to turn out."

0:05:580:06:00

Ponies are very sensitive animals.

0:06:000:06:02

Brie keeps a close eye on all of us

0:06:020:06:04

and a slightly nervous Saira keeps a close eye on Brie.

0:06:040:06:08

This is Brie, OK? She's a little four year old Highland pony.

0:06:080:06:12

No problems so far. Saira and Brie are getting on fine.

0:06:120:06:15

The thing about horses, they're very big,

0:06:150:06:17

so the places that you don't want to stand are right behind her

0:06:170:06:21

and right in front of her,

0:06:210:06:22

because they can strike out with their front feet.

0:06:220:06:24

OK. I've not really, like, encountered horses before,

0:06:240:06:28

so I was really, really excited.

0:06:280:06:31

Right, Junior Vets, big challenge that you've got,

0:06:310:06:34

but I want you to do me proud, OK? See you later.

0:06:340:06:37

-Bye, Paul.

-Bye, Paul.

0:06:370:06:39

The team need to take a test sample from deep inside Brie's head.

0:06:390:06:43

What we're going to do is pass this camera up Brie's nose,

0:06:430:06:47

we're going to put some fluid in and when we suck the fluid back,

0:06:470:06:51

we must collect it and put it in these little containers.

0:06:510:06:53

And is that, like, a sample?

0:06:530:06:54

That's a sample. Now, who wants to put the camera in

0:06:540:06:58

and who wants to take the samples?

0:06:580:07:00

-I don't mind, do you want to do it?

-Camera.

0:07:000:07:02

-Sam's got the camera. Saira, you've got the samples.

-Yeah.

-OK?

0:07:020:07:05

And later, my Junior Vets must get that all important test sample.

0:07:050:07:11

I think we're quite nervous at the moment,

0:07:110:07:14

-but I hope it all works out for us.

-Yeah.

0:07:140:07:16

Saira, you've got a job to do here,

0:07:160:07:19

come on, Junior Vet, you can do this.

0:07:190:07:22

For their first vital vet work assignment,

0:07:260:07:28

Will and Amblessed have been called to Five Sisters Zoo

0:07:280:07:31

in West Lothian.

0:07:310:07:33

Don't look at me like that.

0:07:350:07:37

And it's the resident racoons that need help today.

0:07:370:07:40

This furry family has a number of feisty young males

0:07:400:07:43

who are causing problems for the zoo staff.

0:07:430:07:46

My Junior Vets have teamed up with exotic animal vet Kevin

0:07:460:07:49

to sort them out.

0:07:490:07:51

We've got some young males within the group, and as they get older

0:07:510:07:54

the racoons might start fighting, or we might have breeding

0:07:540:07:56

which we want to prevent, so the young boys have got to be neutered.

0:07:560:08:00

Neutering one of the males is a good way to keep the peace

0:08:000:08:03

and prevent unwanted babies crowding out the racoon pen.

0:08:030:08:07

It's a simple enough operation, the hard bit

0:08:070:08:10

will be getting their hands on one of the troublesome males

0:08:100:08:14

and that job has been handed to our Junior Vets.

0:08:140:08:17

Zoo keeper Lyn gives them a last-minute briefing.

0:08:170:08:20

You know it's going to be really quick, it's going to be really fast.

0:08:200:08:23

It could be quite dangerous as well and obviously the racoons are going

0:08:230:08:26

to be scared, going to be stressed. So he is going to try and bite us.

0:08:260:08:29

And a bite from those 40 razor sharp teeth could be very serious.

0:08:290:08:33

If I say, you know, I need you to move over there,

0:08:330:08:36

I need you to move over there, you've got to do it for me.

0:08:360:08:38

You've got to get there as quick as you can.

0:08:380:08:40

Apart from that we should be fine, as I say, just listen

0:08:400:08:42

to the instructions when you're in there and we should be good to go.

0:08:420:08:46

I'll keep them down.

0:08:460:08:47

The team get straight to work with nets and poles

0:08:470:08:49

and begin edging the racoons towards a corner of the enclosure,

0:08:490:08:53

making it easier to target one of the jumpy males.

0:08:530:08:58

So maybe try and get this one up here.

0:08:580:09:00

It was really cool to be with, like, an animal that's not, like,

0:09:000:09:04

you don't usually see around England, because they come

0:09:040:09:06

from America, don't they? And it was quite scary, but it was good.

0:09:060:09:10

Safely capturing animals

0:09:100:09:12

is a vital skill for anyone who wants to work with wild creatures.

0:09:120:09:16

Right, guys, if you can put a net up that side

0:09:160:09:19

and bring him back this way for me.

0:09:190:09:21

Impressive work.

0:09:210:09:22

Will and Amblessed have helped send one straight into Lyn's net.

0:09:220:09:26

Right, we've got a racoon, Kevin.

0:09:260:09:29

But is it a male?

0:09:290:09:31

So, how do you tell if it's a female or male?

0:09:310:09:34

Excellent question, Amblessed, there's only one way to find out.

0:09:340:09:37

RACOON SNARLS

0:09:370:09:42

Checking this out is something the racoon is not too keen on!

0:09:430:09:47

Racoons might look little and cute,

0:09:470:09:49

but they're actually quite aggressive.

0:09:490:09:52

HE SNARLS

0:09:520:09:55

Result. The team have captured a young male, called Cyril.

0:09:550:09:59

-Got your adrenalin pumping now.

-Yeah!

-Yeah!

0:09:590:10:02

And later, they face up to their first ever surgery.

0:10:020:10:07

So the plan is, you'll be monitoring his anaesthetic,

0:10:070:10:10

Will, you're going to be joining me

0:10:100:10:12

and actually doing the surgery with me.

0:10:120:10:14

Back at the Vet School's small animal hospital,

0:10:190:10:21

Lauren and Morgan are about to meet their very first patient.

0:10:210:10:25

This is Ronnie, an eight-year-old fox terrier.

0:10:250:10:29

Ronnie's usually a playful little chap,

0:10:290:10:31

but owner Stuart has noticed his poor pet

0:10:310:10:33

develop a painful looking limp recently.

0:10:330:10:36

-Hi, my name's Morgan.

-Hi, I'm Lauren.

0:10:360:10:39

He's hoping the Junior Vets and surgeon Sam Woods

0:10:390:10:43

can help work out what's wrong with Ronnie.

0:10:430:10:45

So, how can we help you today?

0:10:460:10:48

Ronnie's just had a sore foot for the last few weeks.

0:10:480:10:51

The team's worried Ronnie might have more than just paw problems,

0:10:510:10:55

so they must carry out a thorough examination.

0:10:550:10:57

Put them in your ears, OK?

0:10:570:10:59

I want you to look at the clock.

0:10:590:11:02

15 seconds, count how many beats.

0:11:020:11:06

By monitoring Ronnie's heart rate,

0:11:060:11:08

Morgan might be able to pick up on any serious illnesses.

0:11:080:11:10

Ronnie was really cool, because he was calm

0:11:100:11:13

and he didn't really mind us testing on him.

0:11:130:11:16

A very fast heart rate could be an indicator of stress

0:11:170:11:20

or even a potentially fatal heart disease.

0:11:200:11:23

Well, there's two beats at a time, but I counted 15.

0:11:240:11:27

OK, so you're absolutely right,

0:11:270:11:28

so what you really hear is two beats so you hear bo-bum,

0:11:280:11:31

and if there's 15 of them in 15 seconds,

0:11:310:11:33

then there's 60 of them in a minute.

0:11:330:11:36

Great news, Ronnie's heart rate sounds healthy.

0:11:360:11:39

Now, Lauren examines his gums. Pink gums are a sign of good health.

0:11:390:11:43

-Yeah.

-Lovely. All right.

0:11:430:11:47

Finally, Morgan checks his ears for signs of infections.

0:11:470:11:50

What am I looking for?

0:11:500:11:52

OK, what you look for, you're looking for any redness

0:11:520:11:55

or any wax that you can see in there, anything like that.

0:11:550:11:57

-No, all fine.

-You can always have a bit of a smell,

0:11:570:11:59

-just check that they don't smell too nasty, no?

-No.

0:11:590:12:02

Morgan's happy with his examination,

0:12:020:12:04

but it hasn't given up any further clues to Ronnie's problem.

0:12:040:12:08

Lauren now focuses on his lower leg.

0:12:080:12:11

Touch the base of his paw, just up onto this bit of his leg there,

0:12:110:12:14

so I'll just help hold on to him. Keep going, that's it. Good boy.

0:12:140:12:19

Good boy.

0:12:190:12:21

Then the upper leg.

0:12:210:12:23

And then finally, up to the shoulder

0:12:230:12:26

cos that's at the top of the leg.

0:12:260:12:28

DOG YELPS

0:12:280:12:30

-OK.

-'That doesn't sound good.'

0:12:300:12:32

Something is definitely wrong with Ronnie's left leg.

0:12:320:12:37

HE YELPS

0:12:370:12:38

-OK, good boy.

-It's sore, isn't it, darling?

0:12:380:12:41

Poor Ronnie is clearly in pain

0:12:410:12:43

and Lauren is determined to work out how to help him.

0:12:430:12:47

So, would you say that yelp was a symptom of something,

0:12:470:12:50

or would you say he was just a bit annoyed with you touching him?

0:12:500:12:53

He didn't like me extending his left,

0:12:530:12:55

that makes me wonder, is there something going on in his shoulder

0:12:550:12:58

that's causing him a bit of discomfort?

0:12:580:13:00

We now have to rule out whether it's toes that are causing the problem,

0:13:000:13:03

or whether there is something actually going on in his shoulder.

0:13:030:13:07

To find out, the team need a closer look inside Ronnie's leg.

0:13:070:13:11

And later, they uncover vital clues

0:13:110:13:14

that might bring about a remedy for Ronnie.

0:13:140:13:17

-Look at that.

-Yeah.

-That must be painful.

0:13:170:13:21

Every one of my Junior Vets

0:13:290:13:30

are working with animals that need their help,

0:13:300:13:32

and I'm getting regular updates on their progress.

0:13:320:13:35

I'll be awarding Vital Vet Work awards

0:13:350:13:38

to star performers at the end of the day.

0:13:380:13:41

These daily awards either go to Junior Vets working in pairs,

0:13:410:13:45

but they can also go to stand-out individuals.

0:13:450:13:49

And the more they get,

0:13:490:13:50

the better the chance of winning my Head Vet title.

0:13:500:13:54

You can see how you get on as a virtual vet

0:13:560:13:58

in the Junior Vets game on the CBBC website.

0:13:580:14:01

Don't forget to look for the special game code

0:14:010:14:03

at the end of today's show.

0:14:030:14:06

Will and Amblessed are at a zoo in West Lothian.

0:14:130:14:16

They've captured a male racoon called Cyril,

0:14:160:14:18

who needs an operation that will help calm him down

0:14:180:14:20

and stop unwanted babies overcrowding the enclosure.

0:14:200:14:24

Vet Kevin quickly sets the Junior Vets to work.

0:14:260:14:29

Amblessed has to manage the anaesthetic,

0:14:290:14:32

a drug that will keep Cyril safely unconscious during his op.

0:14:320:14:36

120.

0:14:360:14:38

I had to take his heartbeat, his respiration rate

0:14:380:14:41

and his temperature occasionally, but it was harder

0:14:410:14:44

because it was really warm in there.

0:14:440:14:46

This is a big responsibility for my new Junior Vet.

0:14:460:14:49

Any mistakes could result in her missing a sign

0:14:490:14:52

that something is wrong.

0:14:520:14:54

414.

0:14:540:14:57

Will is assisting Kevin with the op, which means he must scrub in.

0:14:570:15:02

Now you can start scrubbing that.

0:15:020:15:04

It's a critical job for every surgeon.

0:15:060:15:08

Even the smallest amount of dirt could cause an infection

0:15:080:15:11

and endanger Cyril's life.

0:15:110:15:12

I've never been in an operation before,

0:15:120:15:14

so it sort of gave me the real life sense of being a vet.

0:15:140:15:18

This is Will and Amblessed's first ever experience of surgery.

0:15:200:15:24

It's a huge challenge, so I'm going to lend them a hand.

0:15:270:15:30

Are you happy with his condition under anaesthetic?

0:15:320:15:34

Can you tell me what's going on?

0:15:340:15:35

Yeah, he's doing quite well, so he has around 120 heartbeats a minute,

0:15:350:15:39

which is good.

0:15:390:15:41

What happens if his heart rate goes up?

0:15:410:15:44

That means he...he might be starting to wake up.

0:15:440:15:47

Right, OK, that's important, isn't it?

0:15:470:15:50

-You really don't want him to wake up during anaesthetic, do you?

-No.

0:15:500:15:53

And also, you don't want him to go too far into the anaesthetic either

0:15:530:15:56

so, you're doing a really important job.

0:15:560:15:59

Amblessed has Cyril's vital signs under control...

0:15:590:16:02

He's stable and doing well?

0:16:020:16:04

Yeah.

0:16:040:16:06

..and gives the go-ahead for Kevin and Will to start the neutering op.

0:16:060:16:09

OK, then we're going to start.

0:16:100:16:12

The team are removing Cyril's reproductive organs,

0:16:120:16:16

so he can't have any more unwanted babies.

0:16:160:16:19

We're going to put clamps on here and here

0:16:190:16:21

and that's where you've got to concentrate...

0:16:210:16:23

-To stop it from constantly bleeding.

-Stop it from bleeding here out.

0:16:230:16:27

It's a tense procedure. Amblessed needs to stay focussed

0:16:270:16:31

on counting Cyril's heart and breathing rates.

0:16:310:16:34

So we're going to place one clamp here.

0:16:340:16:37

It's a bit gory, but Will needs to keep his focus.

0:16:370:16:40

We need another clamp,

0:16:410:16:42

same style clamp again or one of them, that'll be fine.

0:16:420:16:45

It was the first time I'd actually

0:16:450:16:47

been in an operating theatre and I wasn't sure

0:16:470:16:49

that he was going to make it and what the outcome would be.

0:16:490:16:53

So if we have one of the lengths of suture material...

0:16:530:16:56

Cyril has been successfully neutered so Kevin stitches him up.

0:16:580:17:02

We've finished surgery, guys.

0:17:020:17:04

Amblessed has to do a few last checks

0:17:040:17:06

on heart rate and temperature...

0:17:060:17:08

-Can you read it?

-37.6.

-That's it.

0:17:090:17:12

..before Cyril is given an injection to wake him up.

0:17:120:17:16

He should start recovering now within about ten minutes.

0:17:160:17:20

That was a solid first time performance

0:17:200:17:23

from both of my Junior Vets today.

0:17:230:17:25

Didn't want to, like, get it wrong,

0:17:250:17:27

so that the animal could be in danger of its life.

0:17:270:17:30

You never know how someone who's never been exposed

0:17:300:17:32

to that before is going to react.

0:17:320:17:34

They coped with that situation very well indeed.

0:17:340:17:36

Monitoring the anaesthetic was really important,

0:17:360:17:38

because numbers were rising or dropping,

0:17:380:17:41

so I'm really proud of myself.

0:17:410:17:42

And the great news, Cyril's made a full recovery

0:17:440:17:46

and is enjoying life back in the racoon enclosure.

0:17:460:17:50

Back at the small animal hospital,

0:17:580:18:00

Lauren and Morgan are investigating Ronnie the fox terrier's

0:18:000:18:03

painful looking limb.

0:18:030:18:04

HE YELPS

0:18:040:18:06

They're hoping a radiograph, or x-ray image,

0:18:060:18:08

can shed a little more light on the problem.

0:18:080:18:10

Do you want to pop him up onto the table for me?

0:18:100:18:13

This won't hurt Ronnie,

0:18:130:18:14

but he'll need a mild sedative to settle him down

0:18:140:18:17

and keep him nice and still.

0:18:170:18:19

Will he be fully unconscious?

0:18:190:18:21

He won't, we're just giving a sedation,

0:18:210:18:24

it's not a full anaesthetic, so he'll still be able to hear things,

0:18:240:18:27

but he's going to be much more sedate than he would be.

0:18:270:18:30

So his muscles will all go weak now.

0:18:300:18:33

Ronnie's clearly nervous,

0:18:330:18:35

the Junior Vets do their best to calm him.

0:18:350:18:39

It's all right, matey, it's all right, sweetie.

0:18:390:18:44

Lauren helped Ronnie keep calm so when we was testing on him,

0:18:440:18:50

and seeing what were wrong, that he wouldn't move or jump.

0:18:500:18:53

That's perfect.

0:18:530:18:55

Ronnie is positioned for his x-ray.

0:18:550:18:57

We want it absolutely side-on, so if you can have a look at that,

0:18:570:19:00

-see if you think it's straight.

-Yeah.

0:19:000:19:02

Exposure to x-ray radiation can be harmful,

0:19:020:19:05

especially to young people, so our Junior Vets leave the room.

0:19:050:19:09

-Do you think the dog's going to be OK?

-Hopefully.

0:19:090:19:13

Within seconds, there's an image ready to be examined

0:19:130:19:17

that might help solve the mystery of Ronnie's painful leg.

0:19:170:19:20

We'll pop across the corridor and develop it.

0:19:220:19:25

Lovely.

0:19:280:19:30

Oh. That is so cool.

0:19:300:19:33

But it's not wannabe vet Lauren

0:19:330:19:35

who's the first to identify a possible problem.

0:19:350:19:38

It's Morgan, who thinks he's spotted something wrong

0:19:380:19:41

with Ronnie's left paw.

0:19:410:19:42

Morgan thought he saw something on the foot.

0:19:420:19:45

-Look at that.

-Yeah.

-That must be painful.

0:19:450:19:48

It did look quite peculiar, it didn't look particularly normal.

0:19:480:19:53

Morgan has got it spot-on.

0:19:530:19:55

It seems Ronnie has suffered a suspected fracture

0:19:550:19:57

to his sesamoid bone, a bone that's part of the paw.

0:19:570:20:01

That's really the area where Ronnie had that swelling,

0:20:010:20:05

that soft tissue swelling. It could be he's had that since birth.

0:20:050:20:09

It could be that that's been a trauma.

0:20:090:20:12

But it's looking like double trouble.

0:20:120:20:13

Sam suspects that Ronnie has developed arthritis in his shoulder.

0:20:130:20:17

So, I'll book him back in for a CT scan at a later date.

0:20:190:20:23

Today's hard work will mean Sam can fix a course of treatment

0:20:230:20:27

that will help relieve Ronnie's pain.

0:20:270:20:29

And before going home, Ronnie can enjoy a well-deserved rest.

0:20:320:20:35

Good boy, Ronnie.

0:20:370:20:38

Both my new Junior Vets impressed me on their first case.

0:20:390:20:43

I really enjoyed it and doing this has made me really up my game

0:20:430:20:46

cos I want this more than ever.

0:20:460:20:47

Morgan, very keen on the digital imaging, and I think he'll do well.

0:20:470:20:52

The experience today definitely makes me want to be a vet

0:20:520:20:55

even more than it did, because it's exactly what I want to do

0:20:550:20:57

throughout the rest of my life.

0:20:570:20:59

Lauren, really keen to do everything, really impressed.

0:20:590:21:02

And the latest news is,

0:21:020:21:04

Ronnie is enjoying exercising again and is back to his old, happy self.

0:21:040:21:09

Back at the Riding School,

0:21:170:21:18

Sam and Saira need to test pony Brie

0:21:180:21:20

for a serious disease called strangles.

0:21:200:21:23

If the tests come back positive that she had it,

0:21:230:21:26

then it's very serious. It can spread inside her body, it can get worse,

0:21:260:21:31

it can make her feel ill, but, most importantly,

0:21:310:21:33

it could spread to other horses and make them ill as well.

0:21:330:21:37

They're using a special piece of kit called an endoscope.

0:21:370:21:40

This is the camera that's going to go up her nose

0:21:400:21:42

and I can make it move around any direction that I want.

0:21:420:21:45

We're about to go in and test Brie to see if she's got any disease

0:21:450:21:50

or infection in her body, and we'll end up getting a little test sample.

0:21:500:21:54

-Good girl.

-The endoscope is inserted up Brie's nostril.

0:21:540:21:57

It might look uncomfortable, but ponies have big noses.

0:21:570:22:00

There's not even a sniffle from brave Brie.

0:22:000:22:04

-Sam, can you come here?

-Yeah.

-And you hold on to the skirt.

0:22:040:22:08

This is Sam's big moment. It's a delicate, expensive piece of kit.

0:22:080:22:13

He must stay in complete control at all times.

0:22:130:22:16

Right, when I say go forward, you go forward, OK?

0:22:160:22:20

Go in Sam, OK, stop, come back.

0:22:200:22:24

They move the scope through Brie's nasal passage

0:22:240:22:26

towards her middle ear. Once there,

0:22:260:22:28

they need to look for signs of inflamed tissue

0:22:280:22:30

or thick, liquidy pus. Both are signs of strangles.

0:22:300:22:35

It was quite nervous when I was putting the endoscope up,

0:22:350:22:39

because we were really near the brain.

0:22:390:22:42

Right, can you come back a wee bit, Sam?

0:22:420:22:44

Just really a slight little bit, OK.

0:22:440:22:47

I was wondering whether she could feel it or not,

0:22:470:22:49

whether she was a little bit scared and I was thinking like,

0:22:490:22:53

"I wonder how she's feeling inside."

0:22:530:22:55

Here we go, look at this, we are in the horse's middle ear.

0:22:550:22:58

They're now in position for Saira to take the test sample.

0:22:580:23:01

It's all down to you now, come on, Junior Vet, you can do this, OK?

0:23:010:23:05

You force it in, fast as you can. Push it in.

0:23:050:23:09

Saira inserts a thin tube down inside the endoscope.

0:23:090:23:12

-Stop. Can you see the tube appearing? There's your tube?

-Yeah.

0:23:120:23:16

That's your tube, now, I want you to squirt that liquid in.

0:23:160:23:19

-Go for it, yeah.

-All of it, yeah?

0:23:190:23:21

The liquid will mix with any pus at the back of Brie's throat

0:23:210:23:24

and make it easier to collect.

0:23:240:23:26

-A little hard to push.

-It's hard to push, yeah?

0:23:260:23:30

Suddenly going from leading our normal lives

0:23:300:23:32

to putting cameras up a horse's nose, I'm thinking

0:23:320:23:35

it's a bit crazy, really.

0:23:350:23:37

Saira must now use a plunger to suck back a sample of the liquid.

0:23:390:23:43

Pull the syringe back, pull this plunger back.

0:23:430:23:46

-'Carefully, Saira.'

-Bring it all back.

-Stop.

0:23:460:23:48

Got it.

0:23:480:23:50

That's our sample. That's fantastic. Perfect.

0:23:500:23:55

Job done, now the Junior Vets can comfort Brie

0:23:550:23:58

and examine their handiwork.

0:23:580:23:59

That's quite cool.

0:24:020:24:03

That was real hands-on work

0:24:090:24:10

for my new Junior Vets, Saira and Sam.

0:24:100:24:14

Sam handled that endoscope like a professional,

0:24:150:24:18

and followed my instructions very carefully.

0:24:180:24:20

I'm really impressed with Sam.

0:24:200:24:22

It was a great fun experience, I had a really good time and hopefully

0:24:220:24:26

when I'm older, I'll be doing it a lot more.

0:24:260:24:28

Saira did really well, she put the fluid in quickly and efficiently

0:24:280:24:31

which is important, we don't have much time.

0:24:310:24:33

For someone of my age to be able to do that kind of a thing,

0:24:330:24:36

this is absolutely amazing, and I think I'll probably remember this

0:24:360:24:39

for the rest of my life.

0:24:390:24:41

It's been a long, hard first day

0:24:550:24:57

for every one of my new Junior Vets.

0:24:570:25:00

But who will earn the first Vital Vet Work award?

0:25:020:25:06

It's time for me to make my decision.

0:25:060:25:09

I need to pick out today's top performers

0:25:090:25:11

and it's not going to be easy.

0:25:110:25:14

Will and Amblessed got stuck in with an unusual first vet job,

0:25:160:25:19

dealing with Cyril, the feisty racoon.

0:25:190:25:22

They didn't back out of the challenge

0:25:220:25:24

and concentrated throughout their first ever surgery.

0:25:240:25:27

Lauren and Morgan proved themselves as top vet detectives in the making,

0:25:270:25:31

as they went searching for clues to help surgeon Sam

0:25:310:25:34

mend Ronnie's mysterious leg injury.

0:25:340:25:38

But Saira and Sam were outstanding.

0:25:380:25:40

They kept their nerve and got that difficult test sample

0:25:400:25:44

from Brie's nasal passage.

0:25:440:25:46

It's been a very tough decision to make on day one of Vet School.

0:25:480:25:52

It's the end of your first full working day at Vet School

0:25:540:25:57

and what a tough day, but there was one team that stood out

0:25:570:26:01

above the rest, and that team was...

0:26:010:26:04

..Sam and Saira.

0:26:140:26:16

You are today's top Junior Vets, so well done, guys.

0:26:160:26:20

All my new Junior Vets have shown a real appetite for vet work

0:26:200:26:23

and a determination to succeed, but it was Saira and Sam's focus,

0:26:230:26:28

overall performance and team skills that won the day.

0:26:280:26:32

They are the first ever Junior Vets

0:26:320:26:35

to be awarded a Vital Vet Work badge and it's well deserved.

0:26:350:26:39

-Amazing, it's fantastic.

-Yeah.

0:26:390:26:41

Cos obviously, that's the first time

0:26:410:26:43

we've done anything like that, and then to know that we've done it

0:26:430:26:46

really well and then we've won the challenge as well,

0:26:460:26:48

that's a really good feeling.

0:26:480:26:49

The reason why we've won is probably our team work

0:26:490:26:52

and how we work together. Amazing. Yay!

0:26:520:26:55

Think you can cut it as a top vet and make animals better?

0:26:550:26:58

Head over to the CBBC website now and use today's game code...

0:26:580:27:03

..to unlock a special case

0:27:050:27:06

in your very own waiting room.

0:27:060:27:08

Next time...

0:27:080:27:11

there's no let-up for my Junior Vets

0:27:110:27:13

as they race to help horses...

0:27:130:27:15

learn to turn sheep...

0:27:150:27:18

..and are confronted with major surgery.
