Coming up on Junior Vets - | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
Stella the dog needs urgent surgery... | 0:00:04 | 0:00:05
It's like trying to get an egg shell out of your yolk. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:09
..junior vets join the emergency response team at the races | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
and a lame lamb needs help down on the vet school farm. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
When pets are poorly, wildlife gets wounded or farm animals feel unwell, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
they need top vet help. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
The really lucky ones come here | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
to Edinburgh University's amazing, super high-tech vet school. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
And now, six kids chosen from 1,000 | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
have become the first ever children allowed to enrol here... | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
I'm all ready. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
..and work alongside the school's top vets. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
Who wants to take this cow's urine? | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
They're facing an intense training programme. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Have you done that anaesthetic before? | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
What is this? What's that? | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
And they're being pushed to the limit at animal hospitals, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
vet practices, wildlife parks and working farms. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
I'm Paul Manktelow. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
It took me five hard years to train to be a vet | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
but this lot have only weeks to show me what they're made of. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:20
My junior vets have hardly been around animals before. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
That's so cool! | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
Now they are facing real, heavy duty vet work. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:28
It's like everything's just so bonkers. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
That is amazing. That's cool. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Have they got the stomach to succeed? | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
I feel like a real vet. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
And can they stay calm under extreme pressure? | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
Six raw recruits. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
I can only choose... | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
one winner. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
The first ever junior vet to win the prestigious head vet title is... | 0:01:57 | 0:02:03
Day two and my junior vets have shown | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
they are committed to caring for animals. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
But can they keep it up when under pressure? | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
Junior vets, welcome back. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
You have made it through your first day at vet school so very well done. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
But now it is time to pick up the pace. So... | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
Saira and Amblessed. Will and Morgan. Sam and Lauren. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:37
Let's get down to business. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
Today, my junior vets will be working with the school's top vets | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
in the hospital, on the farm and at the races! | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
I'll be getting regular reports on their performance. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
They all want to get their hands on one of these - | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
the daily Vital Vet Work award. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
But, ultimately, it's my decision who will be named head vet. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
So how are my junior vets shaping up? | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
Amblessed might be the youngest of my junior vets | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
but she is already showing top vet potential. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
She's shown she can pick up new skills at speed. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
Just as well because today will be a very different challenge for her. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
He has around 120 heartbeats a minute, which is good. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
But it is Sam, who with his previous partner Saira, took an early lead | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
when they became the first ever Vital Vet Work award winners. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
Today is going to be an all-important day for Sam | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
who has ambitions of becoming a veterinary surgeon when he's older. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
That's quite cool. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:40
Will he be able to hack it in an operating theatre? Let's find out. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:45
In the vet school, small animal hospital surgeon Sam Woods | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
is attending to a very poorly patient. | 0:03:55 | 0:04:00
Four-year-old Stella is normally a playful Labrador cross, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
but she suffered a serious leg injury | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
when she was run over by a car. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
Hi, Lauren and Sam. I'd like you to meet Stella. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
Come on. There we go. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:15
She was out having a run with her owner and, unfortunately, managed | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
to slip her collar and ran across the road and got hit by a car. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:28
We were quite shocked to find Stella in the state she was. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
She was quite run down and you could tell | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
that she was quite upset with her leg. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
So sweet. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
Dogs have wrists similar to humans. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
Stella's wrist joints have opened up and she needs urgent surgery | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
to repair the damage. If the surgery isn't successful, | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
she could be in a lot of pain for the rest of her life. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:52
Our junior vets prepare Stella for surgery. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
She is given anaesthetic, a drug to keep her safely unconscious | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
throughout the operation. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
Lauren has the first big job - to clip the hair on Stella's leg. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:11
With Stella unconscious, | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13
junior vet Sam gets his first glimpse of the injury | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
and it's not pretty. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:18
-Is that the bone? -Yeah, that's the bone in there. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
Can I come around and have a look? | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
When we saw the wound, | 0:05:23 | 0:05:25
it was really, really shocking. Just like the state it was in, | 0:05:25 | 0:05:29
it was just disgusting. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
Both junior vets Sam and Lauren are determined to try and help Stella. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
They scrub in for their first ever vet school op. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
This is a vital job for any surgeon. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
Washing their hands over and over will help prevent dirt or infection | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
getting into theatre and harming Stella. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
I'm all ready. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
Once scrubbed in, the junior vets cannot touch anything | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
including their own face! | 0:05:53 | 0:05:54
But Lauren's made a mistake. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
Lauren did all her scrubbing | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59
and then, with her bare hands, she's touched her mask, | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
like, just like a tiny bit. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
So that obviously means that she has to start all the scrubbing again. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
I was so angry with myself. It was... I was so irritated. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:12
I'm not doing that again. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:16
All done. Now it's safe to bring Stella into theatre, | 0:06:16 | 0:06:20
but are my wannabe vets up for this big job? | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
I'm not worried that I'll faint or anything. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
I think you have just got to get on with it, really. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
This veterinary team has years of experience. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
One, two, three! | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
Except Sam and Lauren who have only one vet school day | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
under their belt so far. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
Just hold the foot. That's great. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
It's all going to plan. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:43
Can you count the number of swabs that we have there? | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
Seven, eight, nine, ten. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:47
Then suddenly, it proves too much for junior vet Sam. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
He leaves the theatre feeling light-headed. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:58
Can I take my mask off? | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
That's what I needed to get off. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
It wasn't the blood and guts and gore that set me off at all. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
It was more the fact that we were standing there, | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
in the hot room and then, I think, with the mask as well. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
And when you breathe in and breathe out, it's so hot and it all gathers | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
in your mask and it's just really not comfortable at all. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
While Sam catches his breath, Lauren sticks with Stella. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
For now, the operation must continue minus one junior vet. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:28
Later, the team work to repair Stella's damaged wrist joints. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:33
But will Sam make it back into surgery? | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
I'll just stay with you, in case you do feel a little bit worse. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
It's flat racing day at Musselburgh Racecourse in Edinburgh. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
With 75 horses taking part, it's crucial to have a top emergency | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
response team on standby at all times. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
Lucky junior vets Will and Morgan are about to experience | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
what it's like to be a vet on call on a special race day. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:08
So, what equipment will we need for today? | 0:08:08 | 0:08:10
Right, so we need a bandage box. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:11
Does one of you want to get one of these big blue bandage boxes for me? | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
The team are on hand to help any horse that becomes ill or injured. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
Sadly, broken limbs are a real possibility. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
So these are if we have a horse that we suspect has a broken leg. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
We can use these to kind of stabilise the legs. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
So, we'll take all these things into the car, all right? | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
These huge horses weigh around 450 kilos | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
and reach speeds of 40 miles per hour. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
When race horses fall, injuries can be serious. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:43
Badly injured horses sometimes have to be put to sleep straightaway | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
to stop their suffering. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
John must prepare the junior vets for the very worst. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
We have this drug here, | 0:08:53 | 0:08:54
which is basically like a strong aesthetic, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
and it basically anaesthetises the animal very deeply | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
and then sends them slowly into death. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:01
You may come across that in the course of today. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
Hopefully you will be well prepared for that. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
We then realised that we had a very serious job that we had | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
to deal with and we had to help out a lot. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:13
As the horses are led to the starting line, | 0:09:13 | 0:09:15
the team complete final communication tests. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
RADIO: 'Top of the course to Junior Vets, come in, please, over.' | 0:09:18 | 0:09:22
Junior vets receiving, over. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:23
Well done, excellent. So we're all ready to go now. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:26
Awesome. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:27
Quick, guys. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
The vet team have access-all-area passes | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
and head for their response vehicle in the centre of the course. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
Junior Vets are go. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
The junior vets have important roles today. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
They must closely observe the runners | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
and look carefully for any signs of injury. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
They must keep their concentration at all times. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
When the horses went, we started really zooming off. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
I wasn't expecting it. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:57
The reason we do this is to make sure we're nice and close | 0:09:57 | 0:09:59
to the horses in case anything happens, obviously. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
Means we can be there within a few seconds. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:06
But with all the excitement, John is worried that Will and Morgan | 0:10:06 | 0:10:09
have lost sight of their important role. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
Remember to look out for the horses, guys. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
Here for a job. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
Coming up - can my junior vets prove themselves to John | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
when they help a hot horse? | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
Here's a good boy. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
As well as being home to some of the most cutting-edge technology, | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
the vet school also has its own working sheep farm. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
City girls Amblessed and Saira have been called to help farm vet | 0:10:39 | 0:10:42
Isabelle Truyers, who suspects she may have a sick sheep in her flock. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:47
Sheep need regular checks for infectious disease | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
and lameness, or limping, | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
which is a sign they could be injured or ill. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
Can you spot any of the lambs that are lame in this group? | 0:10:54 | 0:10:57
Any of them sort of flicking their heads? | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
I really wanted to help so I was looking for the little signs. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
Might be limping a bit or twitching or something. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
I think the white one's flicking its head | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
when it's walking cos all the others seem to be upright. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
-Very good. -It's only taking small steps | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
-so maybe that was why he was behind and everyone started running. -Yeah. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:21
Isabelle decides she wants to bring in the entire flock | 0:11:21 | 0:11:23
for a close-up inspection. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
So let's see if you can do as well as Paul the sheepdog | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
and bring them into the shed first. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
Give it a go? Good stuff. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33
This is a huge challenge for Saira and Amblessed. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
They are my least experienced junior vets. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:38
They decide to go behind the flock and shepherd them down the hill. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:42
And the strategy pays off. Even Col the sheepdog is impressed! | 0:11:44 | 0:11:49
It was quite fun actually. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
My junior vets make light work of rounding up the leaping lambs... | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
Wow. That was cool. | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
Right, girls. Let's get them inside so we can take a closer look. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:04
..and move them into the inspection area like seasoned shepherds. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
But before the team can examine the sheep with a painful looking limp, | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
Amblessed and Saira need to learn how to safely handle | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
the heavy animals. It's called sheep turning. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
How are you feeling, Amblessed? | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
Bit nervous but I'm ready. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:22
OK, let's see how you get on. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
There's a real knack to turning sheep. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
Even qualified vets can struggle. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
-So, you'll have to stand on the left hand-side of the lamb. -This side? | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
Yes. OK, one hand on its bum. Yeah? Just there. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:37
And one hand underneath its jaw. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
If they can prove they can keep a sheep under control, | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
they'll be able to help the lame lamb. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:44
And push its bum down. There we go. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:49
And you hold the lamb like that. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
-Wow. Well done, Amblessed. -That was really good. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:54
That was very impressive. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:56
Amblessed, are you proud of yourself there? | 0:12:56 | 0:12:58
-You just managed to turn a sheep. -Yeah, I'm really proud. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
And later, it's Saira's go before both junior vets get to grips | 0:13:03 | 0:13:07
with poorly hooves. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:08
Good job. Excellent. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
My junior vets are completing an intensive training programme | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
here at vet school. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
And it's in the training zone where they'll be learning | 0:13:22 | 0:13:26
essential skills that will help them complete important veterinary work. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:30
For impressive training zone performances, | 0:13:30 | 0:13:33
I give out vet skills credits | 0:13:33 | 0:13:34
and, along with the all-important Vital Vet Work awards, | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
they'll help me decide who will eventually be named head vet. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:43
And in this training zone session, | 0:13:43 | 0:13:44
my junior vets must learn how to stitch up skin! | 0:13:44 | 0:13:48
Stitching is called suturing in the vet world. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
Neat work shows a nervous owner that their beloved pet | 0:13:51 | 0:13:54
has been in expert hands. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:55
I've asked surgeon Sam Woods to help me train and test the junior vets. | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
So, the first thing you need to do is know about your instruments. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
Sam demos on plastic skin. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
This is the only chance our junior vets will have to pick up the skills | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
before they have a go themselves | 0:14:12 | 0:14:14
using forceps, a needle holder and scissors. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:18
-Lift that up. -And working against the clock... | 0:14:18 | 0:14:20
-Wrap it. -..each team must complete a neat line of stitching. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:24
Grab the free end and swap hands. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
And I'm not only looking for brilliant handiwork, | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
I want to see great team skills too. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:34
And that's a knot. OK. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:35
So, I hope you have been paying attention | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
because now it's your turn. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:39
And their turn...is on hairy pork! | 0:14:39 | 0:14:43
-I've forgot. -Put your thumb in there | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
-and then put your fourth finger in there. -This smells really bad. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:51
It can take years for vets to perfect this skill | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
but Will and Amblessed have picked it up in minutes. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
What does it feel like when you're doing it on skin? | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
It's all... It's just disgusting. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
Pull that one back. That one. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's it. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:09
And keep pulling. Make it really tight. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
These two are working brilliantly as a team | 0:15:12 | 0:15:14
and their stitching is neat and tidy. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
Then I'll hold this side. You yank with that one. Yes. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:20
But it's a really slow start from Sam and Saira. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
You put that through, don't you? Do you? | 0:15:23 | 0:15:26
Real vets can't hang around in surgery. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:29
-I've done it wrong. -You need to move that bit that way | 0:15:29 | 0:15:32
and that bit that way. Does that make sense? | 0:15:32 | 0:15:34
Morgan is doing well. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:35
-How we getting on, Morgan? -Fine. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
But his partner has picked up on a tiny technical error. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:42
You're not supposed to let go of it. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:44
Junior vets, times up. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:50
Put down your instruments and stand away from the table. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:54
So, who's got stitching sewn up | 0:15:54 | 0:15:56
and won the very first vet skills credits? | 0:15:56 | 0:15:58
-Well done. -You too. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
Today, it's Will and Amblessed who've really stood out. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:06
Very neat stitching and they worked well as a team. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:09
That's a vet skills credit for each of them! | 0:16:09 | 0:16:11
You can see how you get on as a virtual vet in the Junior Vets game | 0:16:13 | 0:16:17
on the CBBC website. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:18
And don't forget to look for the special game code | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
at the end of today's show! | 0:16:21 | 0:16:23
Back at Musselburgh Racecourse, Will and Morgan are on hand | 0:16:31 | 0:16:35
to deal with any horses that are injured or ill. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
So far, the race horses haven't needed my junior vets' help. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
But suddenly, they're called to the treatment area. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:51
Right, let's go then, guys. Come on. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:57
A horse has run badly and there are concerns it is seriously unwell. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:01
This is the closest Morgan has ever been to a horse in his life! | 0:17:01 | 0:17:05
John and the junior vets use a special bit of equipment | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
called an endoscope to investigate. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
It's a little bit tickly until they get in. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:12
This will allow them to examine the race horse's nasal passage, | 0:17:12 | 0:17:15
throat and windpipe to see what's wrong. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
That's a good boy. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:20
With the camera in place, Morgan can see deep inside the horse's airways. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:25
We had to check for bleeding or swelling in the air pipe. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:30
They are looking for signs of inflammation, | 0:17:30 | 0:17:32
redness or spots of blood. | 0:17:32 | 0:17:34
That was actually nice and clean down there. Nice clean airway. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:39
No evidence of bleeding. No evidence of muck down there. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:41
So it was no real reason for him doing what he did. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:44
Thanks very much. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:45
No problem at all. My pleasure. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
It's an all clear. There's no infection. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
The horse just struggled on a very hot day | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
but it's not seriously ill. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:55
My junior vets now know there's no down time for a vet on race day - | 0:17:57 | 0:18:01
Will and Morgan put in a busy shift today. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:03
We had to be everywhere and all different places. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:07
We had to be on the ball with all the equipment and everything. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
We had responsibilities. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:12
Thankfully, all today's horses made it through their races | 0:18:12 | 0:18:14
and returned home without serious injury. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
At the small animal hospital, poor Labrador cross Stella | 0:18:22 | 0:18:27
is in surgery after suffering a serious leg injury | 0:18:27 | 0:18:31
in a road accident. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
Stella is having her badly damaged wrist bones | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
repaired before a protective cage is attached to the outside of her leg. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:42
Lauren and Sam were helping with the op | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
but the surgical team is now one man down. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
Surgery has made Sam feel unwell and he's taking a breather. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:51
That was the first operation I would have done | 0:18:51 | 0:18:55
and I was really, really looking forward to it. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
I just started to feel really weird and faint. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:03
And I think it was just a bit overwhelming, | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
just with what was going on. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:07
While Sam has time to recover, Lauren continues with her job | 0:19:07 | 0:19:11
and drains blood away from the wound with a suction pipe. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:13
It's like trying to get an egg shell out of your yolk. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
Stella's op is long and complicated so Lauren takes a much needed break. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:20
That was so good. Yeah, it was really cool. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
You've got to go in there again. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:30
Are you all right with all the gory stuff? | 0:19:30 | 0:19:33
I can see they have opened it really far. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
Yeah, they had to. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:37
With Stella's op almost complete, Sam makes a brave decision. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:41
At the start, I vouched to help Stella. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:45
I said I just want to go back in. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
I couldn't have just stayed outside. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
So, how do you feel now you've come back into the surgery? | 0:19:51 | 0:19:54
I feel a bit relieved actually because I wanted to obviously help | 0:19:54 | 0:19:58
Stella in some way and have some input. | 0:19:58 | 0:20:01
As the last pins are fixed into Stella's wrist, | 0:20:02 | 0:20:05
the junior vets go ahead and prepare a nice warm recovery bed. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:10
Do you think she's going to like our bed? | 0:20:13 | 0:20:15
I hope she does. Five-star accommodation. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:19
Do you think they have a button where you can call for room service? | 0:20:19 | 0:20:22
But it won't be until morning before they can check | 0:20:22 | 0:20:25
on Stella's progress again. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:27
I didn't really know how the operation had gone. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
I thought she'd just be lying in a crate, | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
feeling sorry for herself and not very happy. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:37
But incredibly, the next morning, | 0:20:39 | 0:20:45
Stella is out of her recovery kennel and on her feet! | 0:20:45 | 0:20:51
She was almost back to how she was | 0:20:53 | 0:20:56
and better than before the operation. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
I was so happy that I'd done that and that we'd made her feel better. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:05
Both Sam and Lauren took part | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
in highly specialised surgery with Stella. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
Every time I help an animal, | 0:21:19 | 0:21:21
I get like this little feeling inside, which is really nice. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:25
And I just like helping animals | 0:21:25 | 0:21:27
and I really just want to do that for the rest of my life. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
Going forward, I think I'll be a lot more confident | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
going into other operations. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
And I think I'll know what's coming up | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
and maybe do other things differently. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:40
And Stella? The protective cage is now off | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
and she is well on the way to a complete recovery. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
Down on the vet school farm, | 0:21:51 | 0:21:53
there's a young sheep with a painful limp that could need treatment. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:58
Before they can help the poor lamb, both junior vets need to prove | 0:21:58 | 0:22:01
they can keep a sheep safely under control. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:03
Amblessed has cracked it. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
Now it is Saira's turn. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:08
Seen how it's done there. You ready to have a go yourself? | 0:22:08 | 0:22:13
I'm a little nervous cos it looks like they can be | 0:22:13 | 0:22:16
a little bit forceful sometimes, but I'll have a go. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:19
You'll have a go. That's the spirit we like. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:21
OK, let's get in there. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:23
I thought that it might help her overcome her fear of large animals. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:28
Push the tail around. There we go. And now lift it up. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:32
OK, and hold it in your lap like this. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:34
Aww, hello. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:36
Saira has just about got to grips with her sheep. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:40
-It's struggling a bit. -Keep it in position, Saira! | 0:22:40 | 0:22:44
Wow, it's quite extraordinary. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:46
Wow, it's a strong one, that one, isn't it? | 0:22:46 | 0:22:48
The first one that I had was a bit feisty and it was like, "OK!" | 0:22:48 | 0:22:52
The other sheep seem to be scared. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:56
I'll let it go, let it go, let it go. | 0:22:56 | 0:23:00
Unlucky, Saira. Even Isabelle struggled with that one. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:04
As a vet, whatever animal comes in to you, | 0:23:04 | 0:23:06
you're going to have to learn how to restrain it properly. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:10
The lame looking lamb really needs their help, but Saira has to prove | 0:23:10 | 0:23:14
she can control a sheep before they can treat it. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:17
Stand here, behind the lamb, and let it lean in your lap. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:21
OK, I have to do this, otherwise, I'm not going to be able to help | 0:23:21 | 0:23:25
an animal that is so cute. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27
That's it. And if you're relaxed, the lamb is relaxed as well. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:31
She's done it. Both junior vets can confidently handle livestock... | 0:23:31 | 0:23:36
It's quite difficult | 0:23:36 | 0:23:38
but I think you get the hand of it after a couple of goes. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:42
..and can now get on with treating the lame lamb | 0:23:42 | 0:23:45
Amblessed spotted earlier. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:47
And straightaway Saira notices a problem with its hooves. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:51
This one looks like it's sticking out. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:54
You're right, Saira. That horn and this hoof is overgrown. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:58
We can do what we do with the rabbits. We can clip it? | 0:23:58 | 0:24:02
Yeah, that's right. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
Amblessed gets to work straightaway. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:07
Gently, don't take too much. Just like you're clipping your nails. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:10
When I'm cutting his excess horn, can he feel it? Will it hurt him? | 0:24:10 | 0:24:15
No, he shouldn't be able to feel that. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:18
Good job. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:19
As Amblessed trims the hooves, | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
the team discover signs of an infectious disease called scald. | 0:24:21 | 0:24:24
If the junior vets don't treat it today, | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
the whole flock could be at risk. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:29
Count to five. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:31
But this antibiotic spray will help kill the infection | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
and save the lambs a lot of pain. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
Let's go. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
This has been a brilliant performance by Amblessed and Saira. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:48
Neither of these two had ever even touched a sheep before. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
Now look at them! | 0:24:51 | 0:24:52
The guys are doing great, aren't they? They look really confident. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:55
I didn't really want to be a vet at the start of this. | 0:24:55 | 0:24:59
But doing this has made me consider being a vet | 0:24:59 | 0:25:01
because it is really good fun. | 0:25:01 | 0:25:04
I've been very impressed with the skills they've shown today | 0:25:04 | 0:25:07
and particularly the sheep turning. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:09
I really love being that person who can get them | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
back to their good health | 0:25:12 | 0:25:14
and, yeah, it feels really good. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:17
And thanks to my junior vets, | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20
the flock's infection has been contained. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:23
My junior vets have another day's experience under their belt. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:33
They've all proved their commitment to helping animals, | 0:25:38 | 0:25:41
so choosing today's Vital Vet Work award winners is going to be hard. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:46
Sam and Lauren pulled together after a difficult start | 0:25:46 | 0:25:49
to help with surgery on Stella's badly damaged leg. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:53
Amblessed and Saira overcame animal anxieties | 0:25:53 | 0:25:57
and learnt how to handle and treat a flock of jumpy sheep. | 0:25:57 | 0:26:00
And Will and Morgan had an exciting but hectic day at the races | 0:26:00 | 0:26:05
working as emergency horse vets. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
It's a tough call, but I have made a decision. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
Junior vets, if you didn't know it before, you know it now. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:15
Vet work is tough, but still you continued to impress me, | 0:26:15 | 0:26:18
so well done. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:20
But there is one clear winning team. | 0:26:20 | 0:26:23
Saira and Amblessed. | 0:26:30 | 0:26:34
You are today's top junior vets. | 0:26:34 | 0:26:37
I've dropped my junior vets into difficult veterinary challenges | 0:26:37 | 0:26:41
and they are discovering that vet work is tough and this is for real. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:45
They've all impressed me, but it was Amblessed and Saira | 0:26:45 | 0:26:49
who stood out as they overcame their fears | 0:26:49 | 0:26:52
and learnt valuable new animal handling skills. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:57
Well deserved Vital Vet Work awards for each of them. | 0:26:57 | 0:27:00
I'm over the moon, it's absolutely amazing. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:02
I just think that I must be doing something right. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
I just got to carry on doing that right. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
Really proud of myself that I won a task like top vet, | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
cos it means that I can do it. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:15
Think you can cut it as a top vet and make animals better? | 0:27:16 | 0:27:19
