I'm down here. Welcome to number 22. I'm Thomas Ticker. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:26
And I love all kinds of parties and celebrations. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
In the festival I've got to show you today | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
you're going to see rather a lot of one particular colour. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
It's not blue. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:37
And it's not yellow. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
It's... | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
..green! Ha-ha-ha! | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
The festival is called Saint Patrick's Day. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
And Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
It's a fantastic party. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:01
And I've got two friends who are going to tell us all about it. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
-Hi, I'm Aidine. -And I'm Orla. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
And we're going to be celebrating Saint Patrick's Day! | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
We live in Downpatrick in Northern Ireland | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
where a very special man used to live a long time ago. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
He's called Saint Patrick. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
Tomorrow we're celebrating his life because it's Saint Patrick's Day. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:29
Saint Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
There are stories about him chasing all the snakes out of Ireland too. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:40
He's also said to be buried here in Downpatrick. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
Tomorrow morning, lots of people will walk to Downpatrick Cathedral. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:51
And they will remember Saint Patrick | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
and flowers will be laid on his grave here. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
Then there will be a big parade. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
And all these empty streets will be SO busy. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
It's the best day of the whole year for Downpatrick. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
We better go and get ready! | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
It's the day before Saint Patrick's Day | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
and our school has turned all green. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
THEY CHEER | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
Green is the national colour of Ireland | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
and we wear it a lot at this time of the year. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
I've got green hair today! | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
We're making hats for Saint Patrick's Day. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
In Ireland we have lots of fairytales and stories. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
There is a story about a leprechaun, a little Irish fairy, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
who was said to be found at the end of the rainbow | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
with his pot of gold. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
So, we're decorating our hats with rainbows and pots of gold. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:59
I'm also making a hat for my cousin, Callum | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
who's coming to the parade tomorrow. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
Beautiful! | 0:03:12 | 0:03:13
Gorgeous! | 0:03:15 | 0:03:16
There you go, wee princess. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
This is the shamrock plant | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
and we're making a giant shamrock to put on the wall. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
The shamrock is often known as the symbol of Ireland. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:34
And lots of people wear it on their clothes on Saint Patrick's Day. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
Now our shamrock's all cut out, it's time to put glitter on it. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
At school today we have a concert. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
And we have to decorate the school hall for it. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
It's nearly time for our concert | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
so we better go and put this on the wall. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
There. Our wall's decorated and we're all ready for the concert. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:12
THEY CHEER | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
There's my mummy and granny coming in now. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
The audience is waiting for the concert to start. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
Ladies and gentlemen, we'll now have Aidine from primary three | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
who's going to recite an old Irish blessing for us. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
An Irish Blessing. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
Always remember to forget the things that made you sad | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
but never forget to remember the things that made you glad. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
Always remember to forget the troubles that passed away | 0:04:50 | 0:04:55
but never forget to remember the blessings that come each day. | 0:04:55 | 0:05:00
This is traditional Irish dancing. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
That's my teacher dancing! | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
Those little instruments are called tin whistles. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:25
It started to get really exciting now. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
It feels like a party. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:34
Even the mummies are joining in. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
Everyone's having such a good time. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:41
We're all in the spirit for Saint Patrick's Day tomorrow now. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:46
Make sure you all come and join in our celebration at the big parade. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:55
Wow! That looked like the best school assembly ever! | 0:05:59 | 0:06:02
And what colour was everyone wearing? Green! | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
It was green everywhere. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
You know, not much is known about Saint Patrick. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
There are lots of stories about him. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:14
Would you like to hear one? | 0:06:14 | 0:06:15
# Celebrate! # | 0:06:15 | 0:06:16
Long, long ago somewhere in England or maybe Scotland | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
or maybe even Wales - no-one's sure because it was a very long time ago - | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
lived a young boy called Patrick. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
Patrick lived a very normal life. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
Until, one day, he was stolen by Irish raiders. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
They bundled him on a boat and took him away to Ireland. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
There he was made to work as a shepherd | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
for years and years and years. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
During those years, Patrick felt lonely. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
So he turned to God and prayed up to 100 times a day. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:09
One night, he had a dream where an angel appeared and told him | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
to look for a little boat that would take him away from Ireland. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
He walked for many days and nights | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
and eventually came across a harbour | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
where, guess what? | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
There was a little boat. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
Patrick was delighted and persuaded the captain to take him onboard | 0:07:38 | 0:07:43
and off they sailed back to England. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
For many years, Patrick studied to become a bishop, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
learning more and more about God. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
Then, one night, he had a dream | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
where the angel appeared to him again. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
The angel showed him a letter from the people of Ireland | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
asking Patrick to go back to them. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
So, back to Ireland, Patrick went to tell everyone about God. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
He did some truly amazing things too. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
Some people say he even made all the snakes leave Ireland. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
# It's great to celebrate! # | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
Wow, what an adventurous life Saint Patrick had! | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
But do you remember what Aidine had made | 0:08:25 | 0:08:29
for her cousin's hat? | 0:08:29 | 0:08:31
A rainbow! | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34
Ha-ha! | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
Well, I can't wait to see the Saint Patrick's Day parade. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
There's going to be loads of people and a lot of the colour green! | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
Let's see. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:46
My auntie and cousin are waiting for us in Downpatrick. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:51
I can't wait to give my cousin Callum this hat I made for him. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:56
We're on our way to the Saint Patrick's Day parade now. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:03

I can see Downpatrick Cathedral from here. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
We're nearly there now. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:51
I can see my auntie and cousin! | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
Hello. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:02
Orla, look at Callum! | 0:10:06 | 0:10:09
Come on! It's time to get to the parade. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:13
There's lots going on in Downpatrick already. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
And thousands of people are gathering round for the parade. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
It's starting to get very busy. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
But we've just got some time for lunch before the parade begins. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:29
We're having Irish stew to warm our tummies before we go to the parade. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:39
This Irish stew is really yummy | 0:10:41 | 0:10:43
and it's got potatoes and meat and carrots in it. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
Granny loves the stew too. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:52
The parade is about to begin. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
Can you see the parade coming? | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
