Hey, Lifebabblers. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
Today we're going to be talking about something pretty important. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
Responsibility. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:14
Growing up means people expect you to be more mature, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
and to do things you've never done before. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
Some fun, some not so fun. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
What does getting older mean to you? | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
Getting older can be awesome. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
You get to try loads of new things, like getting a puppy. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
Yay. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31 | |
But growing up means more responsibilities too. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
Like cleaning up after a puppy. Ew. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
And sometimes that can be a bit of daunting. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
The best thing about growing up | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
is being able to have more control on your life. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
You get to try new things | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
you might not have been able to try before. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
I can have my pudding before my dinner. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
Take that, teachers. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
Learning so much | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
and also meeting some seriously inspirational people along the way. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
So, yes, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
growing up means getting to do | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
lots of cool new stuff. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
But it's not all fun and games. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
Oh, no. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
I'm talking about this. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
Repobinssilty. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
No, wait. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
Sponsierbilyit. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
No, that's not right either. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
Right, yes. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:21
Responsibility. Because, you know, you're that bit older. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
Just when you're about to enjoy your new-found freedom... | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
-ELECTRONIC MUSIC PLAYS -"Saima, have you done the dishes?!" | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
"Have you finished your homework?!" | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
"Have you tidied your room?!" | 0:01:36 | 0:01:37
Yep, it is not easy keeping up with all those new responsibilities. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
So, nobody's a massive fan of doing chores or homework. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
But some children and young people have extra responsibilities at home. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
They could be looking after a parent, a brother or sister, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
or someone else in the family who is ill, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:55
or who might have a disability, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
who needs help doing regular, everyday things | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
such as washing, tidying up or cooking. They are young carers. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
PHONE RINGS ANSWERING MACHINE BEEPS | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
I help to look after my mum, sister and brother. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
In the beginning, I didn't realise I was a young carer. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
I just thought it was something everyone did on a daily basis. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:14
I started to notice my friends didn't do the same things as me. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
I find the life balance sometimes hard, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
and will often do my homework as soon as I get it, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
so I don't have to worry about it. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
I do quite a lot around the house, like do the washing, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
feed the cat, do the recycling. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:30
It varies day-to-day. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
Even though it can be difficult, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
I feel really proud about being a young carer | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
and think it's important to look after your family. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
Having a lot of responsibility at home | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
can have a big impact on a young person's life. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
You might wonder, "Why me?" | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
And ask why your life has to be | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
different from other people's. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
You might feel like you're missing out on the normal things | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
that your friends do. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
Or people might start leaving you out. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
It's normal to feel guilty when you do go out and see your friends. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
Angry, that it's not fair. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
Overwhelmed, like you can cope. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
Or worried about the person you care for. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
And sometimes these feelings can be hard to deal with. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
But there is help, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:14
in schools and organisations where they work with young people | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
with responsibilities at home. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
Who is it in your life who looks out for you? | 0:03:24 | 0:03:29
Sometimes, it's the little things that people do for us | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
which mean the most. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:33
That's it for this Lifebabble. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
