Hey, Lifebabblers. Today, we're talking about poverty and not having

0:00:100:00:13

the basic things that we all need to live.

0:00:130:00:15

Poverty exists, and it's something we should talk about.

0:00:150:00:18

So, over to the team.

0:00:180:00:19

It can be disappointing and upsetting when we don't have

0:00:210:00:24

the money for the things we want. We all know what that feels like,

0:00:240:00:27

but it doesn't mean that you're living in poverty.

0:00:270:00:29

Poverty means that you often don't have the money for the most

0:00:290:00:32

basic things - like food, clothes or a place to live.

0:00:320:00:36

And it can affect everybody, people like you and me.

0:00:360:00:39

Family circumstances can change.

0:00:390:00:41

People can experience poverty for a short amount of time,

0:00:410:00:43

people can experience poverty for the whole of their lives.

0:00:430:00:46

And some people might never experience it.

0:00:460:00:48

Poverty doesn't always look the same, and it can look different

0:00:480:00:51

depending on where you are in the world.

0:00:510:00:53

Don't judge someone for living in poverty.

'Poverty is when a family can't quite afford stuff

0:00:570:01:00

'like clothes or rent.

0:01:000:01:02

'At my school, everyone wears a school uniform.

0:01:020:01:06

'It means people can't judge each other about their clothes,

0:01:060:01:08

'and everyone is the same.

0:01:080:01:11

'I know people at school who used to get free meals,

0:01:110:01:13

'but no-one ever makes a big deal about it.'

0:01:130:01:15

One of my buddies from college came up from poverty.

0:01:170:01:20

That he still succeeded, it really motivated me

0:01:200:01:22

and showed me that you CAN overcome hard circumstances.

0:01:220:01:25

My family and I have experienced poverty,

0:01:250:01:28

it was when my dad had to go through a temporary redundancy.

0:01:280:01:31

Even though I was sad when it happened, in the end

0:01:310:01:34

it made me extremely happy because I learnt how to get creative

0:01:340:01:36

with whatever I had.

0:01:360:01:38

I didn't know there were ways to donate until just recently.

0:01:380:01:41

I now know that there's food banks,

0:01:410:01:43

clothes banks, and ways to give to people in poverty.

0:01:430:01:47

People experience poverty

0:01:490:01:51

for all sorts of reasons,

0:01:510:01:53

and there's no shame in it.

0:01:530:01:54

You may think you're the only one, but

0:01:540:01:58

lots of families go through poverty.

0:01:580:02:00

And it's not your fault.

0:02:000:02:02

When you or your family lack money,

0:02:020:02:04

it can cause stress and worry.

0:02:040:02:06

You might find the adults in your life argue,

0:02:060:02:09

and that might make you feel anxious and worried.

0:02:090:02:13

It can affect the way you feel about yourself,

0:02:130:02:15

so it's important not to bottle up your feelings.

0:02:150:02:19

Not having money doesn't mean you're worth any less,

0:02:190:02:23

and there's no shame in asking for help and support.

0:02:230:02:26

Some people have more money than others, that's life.

0:02:280:02:30

But if you're having a tough time with money or know someone who is,

0:02:300:02:34

there are positive things you can do.

0:02:340:02:36

Feeling supported and included

0:02:360:02:38

can help anyone going through a rough time keep a positive attitude.

0:02:380:02:42

Put yourself in someone else's shoes.

0:02:420:02:44

Why would you treat somebody different

0:02:440:02:46

because of what they have, or what they don't have?

0:02:460:02:48

If you or a friend are struggling,

0:02:480:02:49

there are cheaper options for you to choose.

0:02:490:02:51

Maybe go to the park, or join a club at school.

0:02:510:02:54

Be kind and understanding.

0:02:540:02:57

Show you care, and don't judge others.

0:02:570:02:58

Your family may be OK, but some families may not.

0:02:580:03:01

If you feel you are being judged unfairly,

0:03:010:03:03

don't stand for it and tell someone you trust.

0:03:030:03:06

PHONE RINGS

0:03:060:03:08

'The world would be a lovely place

0:03:080:03:10

'if we all had enough money to live.

0:03:100:03:13

'And I don't think we should just focus on our OWN country

0:03:130:03:16

'about poverty -

0:03:160:03:17

'I think we should also focus on the other countries around us.'

0:03:170:03:21

You know, people going through hard times, it can happen to anyone.

0:03:220:03:25

You, me - celebrities too.

0:03:250:03:27

Some famous people have been through tough times with money.

0:03:270:03:30

People like Lord Alan Sugar,

0:03:300:03:32

pop stars Justin Bieber

0:03:320:03:33

and Nicole Scherzinger.

0:03:330:03:35

Circumstances can change for people. If you're going through hard times,

0:03:350:03:37

hang on in there. And if you need help, speak to someone.

0:03:370:03:40
