This is Marrying Mum And Dad, where the kids take control

of planning their parents wedding.

They're responsible for making one of the most important days

of their mum and dad's life a success and we're here to help.

On today's show, we've got a brother and sister duo

who're going all out to create a truly groovy big day.

Woo-hoo!

It's kind of what we were looking for.

Mum and Dad know they're getting married, but won't know the plans

until the big day itself.

The kids are hoping to create a wedding to beat all weddings,

but we've got just a couple of weeks to do it.

We'd better get started.

Today, we're in Lancashire,

and we've got a crack team of wannabe wedding planners

just itching to get their hands on Mum and Dad's big day.

-Meet Beth Bardsley.

-Hi, I'm Beth, I'm 12 and I like dancing.

And her younger brother Josh.

Hi, I'm Josh, I'm nine and I like doing BMXing.

He's bike-mad.

He does everything to do with bikes.

Anything that has wheels on, he can do.

She loves dance and she likes squeezing spots,

-No, I don't!

-That's her favourite thing to do.

Beth, Josh and their two-year-old sister, Brooke,

live at home with their dad, Adam

-and mum Lynne.

-Adam and Lynne.

were high school sweethearts. Aw!

They've been together for over 20 years.

There really, like, generous and kind.

They like to do things for us.

If anything, if they had to pick between doing something for them

or doing something for us, they'll go for something for us.

But putting the kids first

means they've never quite got around to tying the knot,

so Beth and Josh are stepping in.

I think it'd be good to do this for Mum and Dad,

because, like, it's a good way to repay them for all the time

and money they spent on us, doing our activities,

and have something nice for them to remember.

But how do Mum and Dad feel,

now Beth and Josh are in charge of the wedding planning?

We've got no idea what we're letting ourselves in for!

I think my mum's a little bit nervous,

because she's a bit scared of what we'll put in!

With the children picking,

I'm not sure if they'd pick something more for them!

Er, that's the whole point, Mum!

Mum likes to be in control,

she had this idea that it would be classy,

so I'm trying to convince it's not going to be, just to wind her up!

And my dad especially likes karaoke.

He won't want it at first, but as the night goes on,

he'll end up going on it and hogging it for the rest of the night!

Oh dear, dad! Definitely time for our Marrying Mum And Dad team

to take control before this mum and dad change their mind

about letting Beth and Josh organise their wedding.

Ladies and gentlemen,

we are gathered here today to mix things up a bit!

Do you, Mum, allow your children to completely and utterly

-organise a wedding day you'll never forget?

-I do.

Do you, Dad, accept that you'll have absolutely no say in what goes on?

I do.

With the handing over of the wedding planning book,

I now announce you officially, 100%, in charge.

I've got the book, I've got the book!

Woo-hoo!

No wonder they seem a bit nervous!

Most weddings take months to organise,

Beth and Josh have got just two weeks.

Right we've got loads to do, not much time to do it in.

We'd better divvy up the jobs so we can help them organise this wedding.

Yeah, well, I'd like to help with the venue and the outfits.

-OK. Maybe we could do the entertainment together?

-Yeah.

And then I'll help them with the food and the...theme?!

Yeah, yeah, just come up with the whole theme - bye!

What ideas have you had?

We had, like, a chocolate themed wedding.

Right. Is that because your mum loves chocolate or...?

I love chocolate!

If she could cover everybody in chocolate she would.

Josh would love to take us to the BMX track

and get us married at the BMX track!

Er, and then we had a beach theme

but we thought it would be a bit too cold!

I don't think any of us would like to be jumping out of anything.

Or potholing.

Come on, Mum and Dad, surely your children won't go TOO crazy!

-Do you have any other ideas for themes?

-A '70s theme.

Like, with the big wigs and really colourful disco type -

-like Saturday Night Fever.

-Ah! Are you thinking the same?

-Yeah.

-You think that'd be good?

-Yeah.

Let's put it in the book.

The 1970s, decade of big beats, big hair and even bigger trousers.

Disco was king and bands like ABBA, the Bee Gees

and The Osmonds ruled the charts.

So, you're thinking there's definitely going to be a disco?

-Yeah.

-Hat's quite a big part of this wedding, is it? The dancing?

-Yeah.

Could do, like, a little dance routine for everyone to copy?

-Oh!

-Ha!

-We'll get everyone at the wedding doing one routine?

Yeah.

Cos, like, we'll already know it

and then at the place they have to copy us.

'Our wedding planners are really starting to hit the groove.'

Thinking a fun bit.

Like, a dressing up box at the edge of it so we can all get dressed up.

Rather than just coming in, so...

-So the guests can all look '70s as well?

-Yeah.

-Can Dad guess the plans?

I haven't got the foggiest. I haven't, I...

I want to be recognisable!

You know, don't want to come with a big Mickey Mouse suit on

or something like that.

You're not allowed in without wearing a wig, or something.

Massive afro wig.

Brilliant! So, that's the theme sorted.

Beth and Josh weren't around back in the '70s but Mum and Dad were.

So, it's vital our 1970s touches are the real deal.

To help us get a feel for the decade,

we're going to see what the '70s looked like.

-So, guys, this is Suzanne and she's FROM the '70s!

-Hi, guys.

Suzanne is an expert on all things 1970s

and today she's taking us back in time.

Suzanne, you remember when all this stuff was commonplace, do you?

I certainly do. All exciting stuff here.

'There've been some big changes over the last 40 years...'

It's a lot easier to carry around, innit?

I'm not sure that would even fit in my pocket!

' ..music has moved on too.'

-So, this is for playing music on?

-Yeah.

How much music could you fit in that?

It was eight tracks, that was what was on it.

'Only eight tracks?!

'We're going to need a few more than that to get this party started.

'Beth and Josh are on the hunt for some funky '70s tunes.'

-So, who likes the '70s most out of your mum and dad?

-Probably my dad.

He likes music from, like, that era.

Suzanne, what's good '70s disco dancing music,

out of all these albums we've got here?

We've got Saturday Night Fever, obviously. Get everybody up!

-We've got the Bee Gees.

-Yeah.

-Yeah, some of that.

Oh, that's the band with...

-Oh, a bit of ABBA.

Dancing Queen, always gets everybody up on the dancefloor, that.

'All authentic '70s floor fillers but we need a floor to fill.'

Right, this is the first room

cos this place used to be a big music venue in the '70s.

-Punk bands used to play here. Good for a '70s wedding?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

-Do you want to see next door, where they used to play?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

It's really big, innit?

-You know, you said the other room for the reception?

-Yeah.

Maybe we could have it up there cos it looks big enough.

'It's big but does it feel disco enough?'

Yeah, Wedding next door, reception up there and then hit the dancefloor.

-Can you imagine your dad up there doing his karaoke?

-Ha-ha, yeah!

Us standing here going, "Stop, please!"

-And if you look up there...

-Oh, have they got a disco ball?

-Yes.

-Disco, woo!

-It's also got a very sticky carpet.

So, if we can un-stick ourselves from the carpet

shall we go and look at the other venues?

-All right.

-All right.

'but '70s grunge isn't really what Beth and Josh are after.'

Disco is the order of the day.

-Let's see if the second option fares any better.

-Wow.

-So, I was thinking they could walk up there.

-Yeah.

-Get married on there.

Maybe everyone can stand down at the bottom and watch?

-Oh, wow!

-Perfect.

This is sounding more promising by the minute.

Looks like we could have found a location for the wedding ceremony

and we wouldn't have to go very far for the party!

-Whoa!

-Wow.

It's, kind of, what we're looking for!

-You don't even want to see the other venue?

-No!

-No!

-Oh, wow!

That's the kind of decision I like! Wayhey!

'Looks like we've hit '70s disco gold.'

They like it!

I'm just going to celebrate here, now.

'This'll be a wedding day first dance like no other.'

Beth and Josh are sold.

A '70s disco wedding means tying the knot in a nightclub,

rather than a church or hotel.

What will Mum and Dad make of it?

Next challenge, some super groovy wedding outfits for Mum and Dad.

Back in the '70s, people would often design and make their own outfits

so that's what Beth and Josh want to do too.

With a little help from vintage clothing designers

Danielle and Kerry.

When designers work on an outfit they sometimes use a mood board,

like this one, to help them.

Obviously, not knowing the theme,

I can't even imagine what I'm going to look like!

I've, kind of, come to the assumption

that it might not be a dress!

I hope it's not a freestyle disco outfit!

Well, it is a disco wedding, Mum(!)

-BETH:

-I quite like that dress, if the belt was lower...

Beth and Josh are really getting into this disco dress design.

Frilly bit, don't know what it's called.

-You were quite keen on lace, coloured lace, weren't you?

-Coloured lace.

Is that a '70s thing?

Lace is a '70s thing,

so coloured would just make it a bit more exciting

and a little bit more disco. Yeah, we could do that.

So, it looks like it will be a dress, but with a definite disco twist.

-I think you could be a designer. Start your own fashion house!

-Ha-ha!

You can come work for us, if you like?

That's all coming together really nicely.

-'Oh, dear'.

-I'll do Dad's dance as well with...

and we're here to help make their dreams come true,

so we've organised a treat for them.

-Yeah, they're going to be learning some groovy '70s dance moves.

come up with a routine to get their wedding grooving.

Great choice, Turbo. With her dance training,

Beth's taken to this classic '70s routine with ease.

It's all new to Josh and soon he starts adding his own moves.

But then Turbo tells us we are way off the beat.

OK? No, no - everybody.

The energy started to go up here and then it started dropping.

Give me that energy. Give me that fire!

Phew. Feels like we're getting back into the groove.

It was really good because, like, I've not danced much in my life,

so it's a good chance to dance, really.

Give me a high five there, Josh. You've got to beat him.

It was really good and it was really cheesy

cos it was to a good song, so... And I really enjoyed it.

To perfect the moves, they have to practice all the time.

I had to so they have to.

But what will Mum and Dad think?

I think they'll be shocked cos they don't think

that we'd be up there dancing, but, like... I did really enjoy it.

Turbo has worked us hard, but time is short.

Pulling off a complicated routine

that will get everybody up and dancing on the wedding day

is going to be a massive ask.

-Oh, I really enjoyed that.

-Yeah, yeah.

Need to do a lot of practice, I think, before the big day.

Really, you think? I've got it locked down. I'm fresh.

-Totally nailed that one.

-I'm going to kick back till the wedding day

and then it's just going to be release.

-And we'll all just copy you.

-Yeah.

-It's going to be great.

Not sure about that, Ed,

but it's another big tick in the wedding planning book.

Halfway through organising Mum and Dad's wedding, Beth and Josh

have sorted the theme, the venue, the outfits and the entertainment.

Next on the list, food.

'Beth and Josh have designed a disco-tastic cake for Mum and Dad.'

'Dave here has spent over 20 years decorating wedding cakes

'of all shapes and sizes, but can he turn their ideas into reality?'

-Shall we get started then?

-Yes.

-Right.

'Beth and Josh are going to have to roll their sleeves up

That's the all-important dessert dealt with...

But Mum and Dad's wedding day buffet

needs a genuine 1970s flavour.

40 years ago, the most popular food was processed meals,

potted meats and pancakes that went in the toaster.

We're starting the food tasting with a top '70s snack.

To whet your appetite,

a little yeast extract-flavoured savoury snack

in the shape of a stick. Enjoy.

'It's not looking promising.'

Um, I've always really liked these.

Yeah, these should be on the menu I think, yeah.

'Oh. That's a nice surprise. Next...'

-I bring you some crispy, savoury pancakes.

-OK.

Look nice enough.

'Ah, monsieur is very discerning.'

They don't even ask what's inside. They don't care.

-What is inside?

-I don't know.

-THEY LAUGH

-Yes to these?

-Mm-hmm.

And the piece de resistance is some processed luncheon meat.

Mm! Dig in.

OK. Looks weird.

Very weird.

Looks like the menu's sorted. Watch out Mum and Dad -

it's not going to be the usual fancy wedding day fare.

It's the day before the wedding.

The disco dress designed by Beth and Josh

is getting a few finishing touches.

They've taken pity on Dad and abandoned the Superman costume

in favour of this rather snazzy white disco suit.

We've been back to collect

one finished and very funky wedding cake.

And Mum and Dad had a legal ceremony

so that tomorrow their disco ceremony can go ahead

and declare them married in front of their family and friends.

Just two weeks ago, Beth and Josh took on the massive challenge

of organising a '70s disco-themed wedding for their parents.

Remember - Mum and Dad are still completely in the dark

about the plans for their big day.

I hope they don't forget their dancing shoes.

Adam and Lynne's wedding day has finally arrived.

It's been amazing. It's been loads of fun.

Beth and Josh desperately wanted to give their Mum and Dad

a wedding day to remember.

And with this sensational '70s celebration, they've done just that.

I knew it'd be good, but I didn't know it'd be this good

so I'm really happy with how it's turned out.

As soon as, like, they knew what the theme actually was,

they had a big grin on their face so it'll always be a day to remember

cos of what's happened, I reckon.

Well, I don't know about you, but I thought that was rather groovy.

-It was.

-I'm so glad I finally got to see Adam's dance moves.

I know, and I have never seen the bride do the caterpillar before.
