Hello, and welcome to Meet The Pups,

0:00:350:00:38

a show where we're going to spend some time with puppies

0:00:380:00:41

from the day they are born.

0:00:410:00:43

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes.

0:00:450:00:47

Big dogs,

0:00:490:00:51

little dogs,

0:00:510:00:54

funny dogs...

0:00:540:00:55

..speedy dogs,

0:00:570:00:59

lazy dogs,

0:00:590:01:00

yappy dogs

0:01:000:01:01

and slobbery dogs.

0:01:010:01:03

But our pups are going to be special. Let's meet Mum and Dad.

0:01:060:01:11

Their names are Lola and Morgan, and they are Springer spaniels.

0:01:110:01:16

Springer spaniels have amazing eyesight

0:01:160:01:18

and a great sense of smell, and they're good friends to have around.

0:01:180:01:23

This is Lola.

0:01:240:01:25

She's about to become a mum for the first time, so she's a bit excited.

0:01:250:01:31

And this is Morgan, and he's going to be a dad for the first time.

0:01:310:01:36

He's very loud and lively.

0:01:360:01:38

When he's not admiring his good looks in a puddle,

0:01:410:01:45

his favourite things are his tennis balls.

0:01:450:01:48

And digging...and digging... and digging.

0:01:490:01:53

If making holes was an Olympic sport,

0:01:530:01:56

Morgan would be a gold medal winner.

0:01:560:01:59

How many puppies do you think you'll have, Lola?

0:02:040:02:07

'Oh, well, you know.

0:02:070:02:09

'I think I can feel about three or four little ones inside me.'

0:02:090:02:13

'I hope it's four! I bet it's four.

0:02:130:02:15

'The best things come in fours.

0:02:150:02:17

'Dogs have four legs, and I've got four tennis balls.'

0:02:170:02:22

This is Lola and Morgan's home

0:02:260:02:28

where we're going to be living with them and watch the pups grow.

0:02:280:02:33

It's going to be an adventure and lots of fun.

0:02:330:02:36

We're all excited because tonight, in this very box,

0:02:370:02:42

Lola is going to give birth.

0:02:420:02:44

But first, Lola has to prepare the box for her puppies.

0:02:530:02:57

She's smoothing out towels

0:02:570:02:59

and tearing up bits of newspaper to make a nice nest for her pups.

0:02:590:03:04

By panting harder and starting to push, Lola gets ready to give birth.

0:03:110:03:17

But no-one knows how long it will take.

0:03:170:03:20

At last, after one, two, three, four, five,

0:03:260:03:31

six hours and a lot of panting and pushing, the first puppy arrives!

0:03:310:03:37

'It's a girl! It's a beautiful girl!'

0:03:390:03:41

'Actually, Morgan, it's a boy.'

0:03:410:03:44

'Oh, what are we going to call him?'

0:03:440:03:47

'Well, he looks like a Bonzo to me...'

0:03:470:03:50

'Yes. Bonzo. Hello, Bonzo!'

0:03:500:03:52

It takes another long time before the second pup follows.

0:03:550:04:00

-This time, it

-is

-a girl.

0:04:000:04:03

'Oh, I want to name her. Let's call her Betsy.'

0:04:030:04:06

When puppies are born, they can't see, they can't hear,

0:04:100:04:14

they can't walk and they have no teeth.

0:04:140:04:17

So Lola has to look after them very carefully.

0:04:170:04:22

Wherever Lola goes, she carries the puppies with her.

0:04:220:04:25

It might look like it hurts, but Lola's mouth holds them very gently.

0:04:250:04:31

By having the puppies close,

0:04:310:04:33

Lola gives them the loving care they need,

0:04:330:04:36

keeping them safe and warm.

0:04:360:04:38

But guess what? Here's another pup popping out.

0:04:380:04:43

It's another girl.

0:04:430:04:44

'Hmm, what shall we call her?'

0:04:440:04:47

'Oh, how about something sweet, like Biscuit?'

0:04:470:04:50

'Biscuit? Did she say Biscuit?'

0:04:500:04:52

'Yes, Morgan. But not the kind you can eat.'

0:04:520:04:56

By licking the pup's nose and mouth,

0:04:560:04:59

Lola is making sure the puppy can breathe.

0:04:590:05:03

Hey, Lola. Wasn't Morgan hoping for four pups?

0:05:030:05:06

'Oh. Yes. Number four.

0:05:070:05:10

'Yes, I can still feel something inside, but, ooh...

0:05:100:05:13

'This doesn't feel right at all.'

0:05:130:05:15

'What's happening? Where are Lola and the pups going?

0:05:150:05:19

'Where are they taking them?'

0:05:190:05:22

Don't worry, Morgan.

0:05:220:05:23

We're off to see the vet to make sure everything is all right.

0:05:230:05:27

Lola's owners want to know if she still has another pup inside.

0:05:300:05:35

If she does and it's stuck, it could make her very sick.

0:05:350:05:40

The vet's having a good luck at Lola's tummy.

0:05:400:05:43

The next day, there's some surprising news

0:05:510:05:54

about pup number four.

0:05:540:05:56

Morgan is still waiting to hear what happened.

0:05:560:05:59

'Morgan, I think you better sit down.'

0:06:020:06:05

'Is it bad news?'

0:06:060:06:08

'Well...

0:06:080:06:09

'Oh, it's a bit embarrassing to say this,

0:06:090:06:12

'but pup number four turned out to be a number two.'

0:06:120:06:16

'Oh. It wasn't a pup. She just needed a really big poo. Ha-ha-ha!'

0:06:170:06:22

After all the excitement, Lola and Morgan are very tired.

0:06:260:06:30

And the pups?

0:06:330:06:34

Well, they just slept through it all. Aren't they lovely?

0:06:350:06:39

Owning and looking after any pet is a big responsibility.

0:06:430:06:47
