Episode 3 Meet the Pups

So far on Meet The Pups, the pups are 17 days old.

Their eyes are fully opened.

Their bellies are full of Mum Lola's milk.

Dad Morgan is still being kept away for their safety.

And it's a hectic schedule for their owners, caring for all five dogs,

sometimes late into the night.

But amongst all the puppy-rearing chaos,

one of our furry friends is about to take their first proper steps.

But who will make this giant leap for pupkind?

Ah, it's Bonzo.

There's a hushed crowd here as Bonzo pushes down,

throws his head forward into the standing dog position.

Is he going to go for the full foreleg wobble? Yes, he is!

Go on, Bonzo, you can do it.

"Yes, go, Bonzo, go, Bonzo!"

"Ohh, I've done it."

He did it. Jolly good, lovely.

Oh, Bonzo's up again.

Although this time, I'm not sure

if he's trying to walk or if he's trying to start a dance craze.

Yeah.

Yep, he just can't resist the beat.

Go on, Bonzo. Bust some moves.

Hey, wait a minute. Where are you two going, all of a sudden?

The party is just getting started.

Oh, I see. Look, I don't think those freshly baked scones are for you.

"Well, I'm sure if I stare at them for long enough,

"they will fly into my mouth.

"Come on, Lola, concentrate, we can do this."

"Morgan, I keep telling you, we are not Jedis."

"Well, maybe you're not, but I'm sure I've got the Force.

"Come on, come to Papa, you lovely scones. Rise, rise!"

"Morgan, please, this is so embarrassing.

"Look, shove over, I'll show you how to lift a scone."

Hey, back off! Cakes and other human foods can be killers for dogs.

"Oh, since when were you the cake police?"

Meanwhile, in a whelping box far, far away,

the pups are being weaned,

which means they are being taught to become less dependent

on Lola's milk, which will slowly start to dry up.

From this moment on,

they'll be fed a handful of solid food up to seven times a day.

This is the first solids the puppies have ever tasted,

but will they like it?

Well, I think that's probably a yes.

"Oh, dear, look at the mess.

"I suppose while Dad is busy trying to levitate scones,

"well, I'll have to clean it up.

"It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

"Oh, yum, yum!"

The pups are getting a visit from the neighbours.

This is to help them become socialised

and to introduce them to the wider social pack.

That is...us.

"Oh, look, look, it's the visitors."

"Yes, that's what the scones are for."

"I love the visitors, they always drop crumbs."

Before they are allowed to see the pups,

the children will have to remove their shoes,

and clean their hands with a special antibacterial gel.

This will prevent them transferring any harmful germs

to the pups from the outside world.

And it will also stop them treading mud all over the carpet.

Lola and Morgan escort the visitors to the pup pen,

watching their every move.

"Have they had those scones yet?"

"Morgan, they've come to see our pups."

"What's up?"

And now there will be a short public information film from Pup Airways.

To hold a pup, please place one hand under the back legs like so.

Then place your second hand under the pup's front legs, like so.

Take care not to shake your puppy and cause unnecessary turbulence.

Puppy wind can be a problem at any altitude.

How do you like that, Bonzo?

"She smells funny."

I suppose we all smell funny to dogs, don't we?

"I like funny."

Bonzo and Biscuit are chosen

because they are the most confident of the pups.

Are you enjoying that, Biscuit?

"Oh, I tell you what, she's playing me like a guitar."

How about you, Bonzo? Do you like us humans?

"She makes me sleepy."

Lola and Morgan are given some food to distract them

whilst the pups are being held. They can get a little jealous.

That leaves me just enough time to sneak off

and eat some of those delicious scones.

"Scones!"

Having a puppy is a huge, time-consuming responsibility.
