A wormery is somewhere worms can live

when they're not underground outside.

-Look at all the worms wiggling about in the soil.

-Whoa!

-The wormery looks fun.

-Oh, it is! The worms love the wormery.

The worms make the soil extra healthy, so,

when I put the soil on Zam's plants, it helps them grow big and strong.

-How do the worms do that?

-I'll show you. Zoom, your assistance, please.

This soil doesn't have any worms in it.

Do you see how it's very pale brown in colour, and it's dry and crumbly?

Now, look at this soil that the worms have been wiggling about in -

it's a much darker brown and it's more squishy.

That's because, when the worms wiggle,

they mix up the soil and help to get lots of air through it.

The worms eat the soil and other things,

like leftover food and fallen leaves.

When they pass it back out, it's full of goodness that helps

plants and vegetables to be big and healthy.

So, if there are no worms in the soil,

the soil won't have any goodness and the plants will be small?

-That's right, Felix.

-The Mayor's plants are small.

Maybe he doesn't have any worms in his garden!

Hmm. You might be right. You'll need to go underground to find out.

-How are we going to do that?

-You can use the underground digger!

What's going on?

We were looking for worms underground

and we ended up in your garden.

Well, you've come to the right place.

My compost heap is full of worms!

It's like the mega-mess in my garden back home.

It might look like a mess, but it's not. It's a compost heap.

I pile up the compost heap with leftover food and leaves

and cuttings from the garden.

The worms turn the leftovers into this stuff called mulch.

I put the mulch on the ground, under my plants.

Mulch is full of goodness that helps plants grow.

Could we take some mulch for the Mayor's garden, please?

Oh, no, no, no. I'm sure there's no need for that.

Of course.

Take as much as you need. Anything for my favourite Mayor.
