Mister Maker Around the World!

Hello, it's making time.

Get ready for an arty adventure around the world.

Today, we go to Hong Kong to make a giant Chinese dragon

and show you how to make your own dragon puppet.

We visit South Africa

and find out how to make a super silly straw in a minute.

But first, roll up your sleeves and let's get arty down on the farm.

Whoa! Ha-ho!

Look at that! We've arrived in the UK.

I'm sure we'll find some arty ideas. Let's have a look around.

Isn't it lovely here? There's so much to see.

Let's have a look on the farm.

We've seen so much beautiful countryside

and our wonderful woolly sheep.

These new friends have just given me a great idea.

Let's try something.

and try making a fantastic fingerprint sheep picture.

Naomi is on her way to help us make our picture.

But first, we'll need somewhere to make it.

Excellent.

The Marvellous Maker Case has become a Marvellous Making Table.

Now we just need some arty things to make our picture.

We'll need...

some paper or card...

..a pen and some scissors...

..some brushes...

..some paint...

and, of course, we need one more thing.

That's right, we need...

a ball of wool?

We don't need a ball of wool!

Wait a minute...

It's Scrappz! How did you get here?

-Oh, I see.

We don't need wool at the moment, but we do need a glue stick.

Can you go and find one? Don't forget the wool, Scrappz!

-Ga-ha!

-There you go! That's much better, thank you, Scrappz.

We've got a glue stick!

Great. We've got everything we need.

Although it does feel like something is missing.

Mm... Do you know what it is? Er...

I'm here, Mister Maker!

Of course! Naomi!

It's you, my friend.

Oh, it's lovely to see you. You're just in time.

We're going to make a picture!

It's a lovely fingerprint sheep picture.

-Now, what do you think of that, Naomi?

-Awesome.

It IS awesome, isn't it?

-So, are you ready?

-Yes.

Good. Are YOU ready?

Fantastic! Let's get making.

Now, let's start by making the hills in our picture.

And we can do that by taking some card or paper, like this.

And we're going to cover them in different shades of green paint.

Now, this can get a little bit messy,

so it's a good idea to put down some old paper or some newspaper first,

and I think we should put some aprons on.

-Hey, we look good, don't we?

-Yes.

Let's get our paint ready.

I've got some nice beakers here.

Then we'll need some paint.

SQUELCH! SQUELCH!

Well done, Naomi. That's some great paint squirting.

And now, we can do some painting.

So, choose a shade of green and make streaks of paint across the card.

So, you can see the paper underneath.

That makes it look like the grass on the hills.

When you finish this one, do the same with your other sheets of paper

using different shades of green. Then leave it to dry.

And now we can draw our hills. So, can you find me a pen, please?

There's one. Thank you very much.

Now, drawing hills is easy. They're just simple curves.

There we are, we have three hills.

And now we need to cut these out.

-Ooh, we must be careful, because scissors are...

-Sharp!

That's right.

SCISSORS BARK AND GROWL

We've got our hills. So, Naomi, time to bring in our sky.

Let's start arranging our hills.

I'm going to put that there.

You can arrange the hills on top of each other, like this,

and when you're happy, glue them all down.

And now we need to make some sheep, by using these things!

Ha-ha-ha!

I'm going to use my thumb,

and I'm going to dip it into the white paint

and print it near the bottom of the page.

Then dip your thumb in the paint again to print another sheep.

Move up the paper, and make your prints smaller and smaller

by using the rest of your fingers.

This makes it look as if you've got sheep far away in the distance.

Print as many sheep as you like, then leave them to dry.

And, Naomi, now we need to give our sheep a head and some feet.

We're going to use our fingers again,

but this time, use the black paint for the legs...

..the head...

..and the ears.

Keep going until you've printed all of your sheep.

And you can even add some extra bushes and some clouds

to finish off your fantastic fingerprint sheep picture.

-Naomi, did you enjoy that?

And today we're going to make one of these silly straws.

Mm, delicious.

And what a fun way to enjoy your favourite drink.

Now, you can make one of these silly straws by using these arty things.

Some fun foam...

a drinking straw...

a pen...a pencil...

some scissors...

and some modelling clay.

But, my friends, do you think it's possible to make a silly straw...

Ahh.

-..in just one minute?

-ALL: No way!

Oh. Well, I think I can.

I will have to be very quick, but don't worry,

I'll remind you how to do it at the end.

Are you ready?

-ALL: Yeah!

-Are YOU ready?

Fantastic. Let's make it...in a minute!

ALL: Three, two, one...

-Start the clock!

-BONG!

The first thing we'll do

is fold our piece of fun foam in half,

and then draw on a teardrop shape,

starting at the folded edge,

like that.

Round and round it goes.

Then we cut out that teardrop shape,

starting at the folded edge.

We need to be careful,

-because scissors are...

-ALL: Sharp!

That's right.

When we open up this teardrop shape,

it should look like the shape

of a moustache.

Now we get our modelling clay,

and we put that on the table.

Then we take our pencil.

Now, very carefully,

we push through the foam

into the modelling clay.

That makes a hole, like that,

and then we can use that hole

to push in our drinking straw.

Let's push it through...

DING DING!

Come on, there we go!

We push it through,

and we've made a silly straw!

ALL: Yay!

I did it!

Let's test it out, though.

Let's have a look.

Ahh. Perfect!

But if you've got more than a minute,

you could try all sorts of ideas.

How about this silly mouth, with purple lips and triangle teeth?

Or you could have a go at making a crazy creature straw,

with pipe cleaner whiskers and a bright red tongue.

Silly straws, made in just one minute.

Why don't you try it? Here's a reminder of how to do it.

Let's go back to the beginning and take another look.

Fold a piece of fun foam in half, and draw on a teardrop shape.

Carefully cut it out,

and when you open it you should have a moustache shape.

Now make a hole like this using the modelling clay and a pencil,

and push your straw through the hole.

Your silly straw is finished!

Let's start by making some patterned paper scales.

Right, let me help.

I'll fold in the corners, and then you stick them down, OK?

Here we go.

We must make sure it's all stuck down, mustn't we?

How did that happen?!

You stuck it to my hands!

These are the whiskers.

BOING! BOING!

-Here are the eyes.

-BOING!

We'll need a big painted background.

And some lanterns.

-Ooh!

-SCRAPPZ BURBLES

We're having a great time here,

and making our big dragon picture has just given me an idea.

-DING!

-Why don't you make something, too?

Have your own puppet show, with this brilliant,

brightly coloured Chinese dragon puppet.

You will need...

two egg boxes...

tissue paper and a glue stick...

scissors and coloured paper strips...

a pen or pencil

and some scrap paper or stickers.

Start by making the eyes for your Chinese dragon.

Carefully tear out two of the bobbly bits from one egg box, like this.

Then glue them to the top of the other egg box.

Now, carefully cut the tissue paper into strips,

and glue them to the back of the egg box...

to make the dragon's mane.

Next, make some paper curls, like this.

Cut a V shape in one of them for a tongue...

and then stick the others on top of the dragon's head.

Stick on paper triangles for teeth...

and stickers for eyes.

Your Chinese dragon puppet is finished,

and ready for a big performance.

What a brilliant idea.

Why don't you try it?

But now let's see how our big dragon picture's getting on.
