What can we do with these leftover strips of paper?

That's a good question.

We can do all sorts of things with strips of paper. We could...

..curl a strip.

Ha-ha!

Fold a strip.

Or we could even turn a strip into any shape we want.

Ha!

Ha-ha! That's right.

Paper strips are a lot more useful than they look.

And they've just given me a great idea.

Let's try something.

Try making a paper strip surprise.

It's amazing what a paper strip can do.

BOTH: Let's make it!

But first, we'll need somewhere to make it.

-Huh!

-And we'll also need some things from the Doodle Drawers.

Lots of coloured paper and some scissors.

We also need a small box with straight edges.

Let's make a paper strip surprise

like this one here.

Wow! That's very surprising, isn't it?

-All right, Dylan, are you ready?

-Yeah!

Ha-ha! Are you ready?

Fantastic! Let's get making.

We're going to make a lot more paper strips.

-We need to be careful with scissors because they're...

-Sharp!

That's right! Here's some paper for you.

Let's get cutting. That's it.

You can make your paper strips any size or colour you want.

When you've cut your strips, you're ready to make shapes.

Let's start by making some curly shapes.

Let's take a paper strip

and we're going to wrap it around a pencil like this.

If you let it go it makes a curl. He-he.

That's a really good one. That's a good curl.

We can also make some hoop shapes, like this.

This needs some glue. Can you help me?

-Yeah.

-Thank you. Can you put some glue on there for me?

That's it.

Now, let's stick our hoop together.

You can make as many curls and hoops as you like.

How about we try making some other shapes?

Let's take another paper strip

and fold it around the edges of a small box.

This makes a great chunky shape but it needs some glue.

Can you put some on here for me, Dylan?

That's it.

Oh, well done, Dylan! That looks really good.

Let's put that over there and make a different shape this time.

How about we take a paper strip

and start to fold it, forwards and then back,

all the way to the end.

If we open it up it looks a little bit like a staircase.

In fact, you can bend your strip into any shape you want.

Now, Dylan, we've also got some other strips left over there.

So, let's bring in a sheet of background paper

and stick them down.

It looks good if you overlap the strips like this.

Now we can stick down our shapes.

You don't have to make your picture the same as our one.

You can make different shapes and stick them down how you like.

OK then, let's stick down this shape first.

Can you put some glue on here for me?

That's it. Well done.

Let's stick it down. Ha-ha!

Then carry on sticking down the rest of your shapes.

When you've stuck everything down, you've made

a paper strip surprise picture that really stands out.

And you can try all sorts of ideas. Like this.

How about arranging the strips in another way

and using different colours?

Or how about using shiny paper to make a picture of twists and twirls?

Oh, this is a lovely day for a drive out in the Makermobile, isn't it?

Hey! It's minute-make time! I'm on my way!

We've arrived.

It's minute-make time, everyone!

This is what we're going to make today.

It's a brilliant bottle bird.

And we can make a bottle bird in just one minute by using

these things.

Some feathers,

some craft foam-shapes, a glue stick,

washing-up liquid,

we also need a small, clean, empty milk bottle.

You need to ask an adult to help you find one.

And some paint.

We'll need some googly eyes which you can find

in an art and craft shop.

Now, do you think it's possible to make this

bottle bird in just one minute?

ALL: No way!

Let's find out. I'm going to have to be quick

but I'll remind you how to do it at the end. Are you ready?

ALL: Yes!

Brilliant! Let's make it in a minute.

-ALL: Three, two, one, go!

-Start the clock!

-BELL RINGS

-Let's get our milk bottle.

We're going to squeeze some paint into it,

just so it covers the bottom.

We're going to give a squirt of washing-up liquid.

Just a squirt.

Then we're going to screw our lid back on. Get ready for some magic.

If we shake the bottle, it changes colour!

Brilliant! Let's get some glue and a craft foam-shape.

Let's start with the circle, we can glue that on there.

Now we can get the triangle and glue that as well.

This is going to be the beak.

Let's put some glue on the sides of our bottle. There and there.

Then we're going to get one feather stuck on that side.

And the other feather stuck there.

Now we need some googly eyes.

Let's stick one googly eye there and

then we can glue the other eye to our bottle...

Yes! I did it just in time.

If you have more than a minute,

you can paint yours another colour.

And try some other ideas too.

How about this red bird, with a crown of yellow feathers

and blue glittery stripes?

You could use a bigger bottle to make

an orange bird with green feathers.

How about using an even bigger bottle to make a yellow bird

with purple feathers?

Bottle birds made in a minute. Why don't you try it?

Here's a reminder of how to do it.

Let's go back and take another look.

Squeeze some paint into a clean bottle,

add a squirt of washing-up liquid and give it a shake.

Stick a foam circle on the body,

and a triangle to make a beak.

Stick a feather to either side, for wings

then stick on two googly eyes and your bottle bird is finished.

Ha-ha! Hello there, it's me, Captain Maker!

I've lost me treasure.

And I thought instead of sailing the seven seas looking for it,

I'd just make some new treasure.

Ha-ha! So, will you help me?

ALL: Yes!

Brilliant! All right then. Sarah, Subhan, Luke, Anza

and Thomas, let's make treasure and lots of it!

We're going to make some treasure.

What is treasure?

-It's sparkly stuff.

-Sparkly stuff, that's right.

-Shiny.

Sparkly and shiny. What colours should we use in our treasure?

-Red!

-Red? We've got some red pom-poms here.

-Silver!

Silver, Anza, that's good.

-Gold.

-Gold. Where should we put the treasure?

-A treasure chest!

-A treasure chest! That's a great idea.

-What can we make our chest from?

-Cardboard box!

Cardboard! Great minds think alike.

I think we're ready, aren't we?

ALL: We're making treasure!

Here's the treasure chest. Let's put it on top here.

We'll need a nice, dark background.

This big surprise has been great fun so far.

Why don't you join in and make your very own mini-make?

Try making this terrific treasure chest to

keep all of your treasure safe!

You'll need paint, a box,

a plastic container, plastic coins and jewels,

some glue, tissue paper and sticky tape,

stickers and shiny paper, some scissors, a paint brush and a pen.

First, find a box and a plastic container that are the same size.

Carefully cut the lid off the box.

Stick one edge of the container to one edge of the

box with sticky tape, like this.

Add a squirt of gloopy glue to your paint,

give it a mix and paint your treasure chest.

When it's dry, decorate it with shiny paper strips.

Stick them across the base of the chest and the lid.

Next, draw a keyhole shape onto a piece of shiny paper.

And stick it onto your chest.

Add some decoration with stickers and more shiny paper.

Fill your treasure chest with scrunched up tissue paper

and all of your shiny treasure.

You've made a fantastic treasure chest for all of your

precious things, that's great to play with.

What a terrific little treasure chest.

I wonder how our big treasure's coming along.

Oh, it looks great, everyone.

We're going to need lots and lots of treasure.
