Can you help me make an animal picture?

An animal picture is a great idea. But what can we use to make it?

Let's have a look.

Ha-ha! It's a pot of hair gel(!)

Oh, no! That won't do.

Do you mind holding onto that? I'll have another look.

Ooh, here we go.

Ha-ha! It's a hair...brush.

What's that doing in there? This won't do!

Come on, we can find something.

Let's find something for our picture.

Oh, what's this in my back pocket?

Wow! It's some kitchen foil.

It's a bit squashed. I must have been sitting on it.

But this has just given me a great idea. Let's try something.

Try making a foil animal picture.

-It's Fido the foil dog!

-DOG BARKS

Let's make it! First, we'll need somewhere to make it.

Ho-ho! We'll also need some things from the doodle drawers.

A sheet of card or paper.

Some scissors and a glue stick.

Wow! A heavy book.

Some stickers and a pen.

We need a lot more things for this picture. I'll call Scraps.

BEEPS HORN

Hello, Scraps! We need lots of things that are made out of foil.

Can you help? Oh, good. Thank you.

Wow! Apple pie! My favourite!

Mmm!

Oh, yeah! That was lovely!

This foil case is perfect,

but we need a lot more foil, please, Scraps. Down you go.

Ooh, yes. That's excellent. Any more?

What have you got? Oh, well done, Scraps! Thank you!

OK then, Alex, let's make a foil animal picture like this one here.

Look, it's a foil dog.

DOG BARKS

-All right, Alex, are you ready?

-Yes.

Are you ready?

Fantastic! Let's get making.

The first thing we're going to do is take a foil tray with a lid.

We're going to take this lid off and put it to one side.

It's time to turn over the tray.

We're going to squash it flat with a heavy book. Here we go.

Wow! That's nice and flat. Now this is going to be the body of our dog.

Let's put it over here. Now we need to squash some smaller cases.

This is great for recycling foil containers that have been washed.

You can turn them into something new.

Everything has been squashed, so let's move these pieces to the side.

Now we're going to use these foil lids, like the one from earlier.

These are going to make the other parts of the dog.

What shapes are on our dog?

We've got triangle shapes for the tail and the feet

and rectangle legs, a zigzag mouth and V-shaped ears.

All right, Alex, let's cut out the dog's shapes,

-but we need to be careful with scissors because they are...

-Sharp.

That's right! Get some scissors.

Here's the card.

And let's get cutting.

If you haven't got foil lids, any type of card will do.

It's time to build the foil dog.

We're doing this on dark paper. It works really well -

it makes our foil really stand out.

Let's bring back in the pieces of the dog.

When you're happy with everything, stick it all down.

-Are you happy, Alex?

-Yes.

Good. Let's get sticking. Can you put some glue on the back of that?

That's it, put plenty on. Thank you.

Let's make some eyes for our dog.

I'm going to give you the stickers.

Can you draw some dots in the middle, please, for pupils?

Well done. Let's stick these on.

And finally, we can make a bone shape from kitchen foil.

There! Now we can stick this down onto the paper for our dog to chew.

We're all finished! It's a fantastic foil dog.

You can make all sorts of foil animals in the same way.

How about a fierce foil cat,

using a round foil case and sparkly pipe cleaner whiskers?

Or how about a mouse with a lump of cheese?

Or you could try a spider with pipe cleaner legs.

Hello. Captain Maker here. I'm looking for my ship.

I hope it hasn't sailed off without me. Let's have a look.

Ah, yes. Oh, right. Whoa!

Hang on a minute. Ship ahoy!

Ha-ha! Look at that! It's my cheese box boat.

It can be made by reusing an old cheese box.

And it takes just one minute. Now, to make it, we will need...

A triangle of wrapping paper, some scissors,

a straw, an empty cheese box, a glue stick,

a hole punch, a ball of modelling clay and some sticky tape.

Do you think it's possible to make this cheese box boat in one minute?

-ALL: No way!

-Well, let's find out.

I'm going to have to be very quick.

I'll remind you how to do it at the end.

-Are you ready?

-ALL: Yes!

Are YOU ready? Brilliant!

Let's make it in a minute.

ALL: Three, two, one, go!

First, we get our scissors

and carefully we're going to cut the lid and the base in half.

-We need to be careful. Scissors are...

-Sharp!

-That's right.

Now, we're going to put these two pieces together like that.

And stick them in place with a bit of sticky tape.

We can stand it up and put our ball of modelling clay in the middle.

We need our wrapping paper. Let's put some glue on this side.

And then fold it in half to make a sail.

Let's get our hole punch and very carefully make two holes like that.

And now if I get a straw, push it through the holes

like that and like that.

And if I stick it into the modelling clay, you get a cheese box boat.

Phew, just in time.

If you've got more than a minute, you could paint it like this.

And if you've got even more time, why don't you make a fleet of boats?

How about a spotty boat?

A boat with folded sails?

-Or even a pirate ship?

-Har har!

-Cheese box boats, made in a minute!

Why don't you try it? Here's a reminder of how to do it.

Let's go back to the beginning.

Cut a cheese box in half and tape the two pieces together.

Fold the wrapping paper triangle and glue it like this.

Carefully make holes in the sail with a hole punch.

Push a straw through the holes. Put modelling clay into the boat.

Push the straw into it and your cheese box boat is finished!

I've got a lovely new home for you to look at.

It's a beautiful cottage. There's only one problem though.

It hasn't been built yet.

So Glen, Mandela, Jonathan, Hannah and Mona, will you help me

-build a big country cottage?

-ALL: Yes!

OK, then. Let's make it!

-Now, what can we make our cottage out of?

-Cardboard!

That's a great idea.

Now how many windows shall we have in our cottage?

-How many do you think?

-Four.

I think we should have four windows.

We've got to make some very pretty flowers to go around our cottage.

What can we use? Good idea. Tissue paper.

We can use a pipe cleaner as well. I think we're ready, aren't we?

-ALL: Yes!

-Come on, then. Let's make it!

We'll need lots of paint for the cottage and the countryside.

I'm painting the tree.

And here's the roof.

This big surprise has been great fun so far.

Why don't you join in and make your very own Mini Make?

Try making a little country cottage to play with and have fun with.

You will need some card,

scissors and sticky tape, some coloured stickers, and a pen.

First, fold a piece of card once.

Then a second time.

Now, fold in the ends of the card.

Unfold the card to see the creases.

And carefully make six cuts at the end of the folds like this.

Then fold the card in half again.

And make two cuts into the folded edge to make a chimney shape.

And cut along the top of it.

Unfold the card again.

Now cut a door shape in one of the ends.

You can decorate your cottage with felt tip pens and stickers.

Finally, fold each side of the cottage together.

And tape the cut ends in place like this.

Now your lovely country cottage is ready to play with.

What a lovely cottage! I wonder how our big one's coming along.

-Is everybody OK?

-ALL: Yes!

What lovely flowers!

There we go! This way, Hannah. Let's put down our window box.

-We've got a nice bush there and...

-Boo!

Now we need a blue sky.
