Can we recycle old paper to make something new?

I think we can. I think we can recycle this old paper

to make something new. In fact, we could make...

Oh, dear. That's not quite right.

Oh, I know. Um... Yes... Um...

Oh, no, that's not right either.

Oh, no! Wait a minute! Wait a minute!

This has just given me a great idea!

Let's try something.

Try making a scrunched-up countryside out of old paper.

It looks very realistic.

-BOTH: Let's make it!

-But first, we'll need somewhere to make it.

And we'll also need some things from the Doodle Drawers.

I'll be back soon, thank you.

Some twigs, leaves and flowers from a garden,

but make sure you ask an adult to help you collect these.

A bowl, some sticky tape and some gloopy PVA glue.

We also need some pebbles. I wonder if Scrappz can help us.

HONK

-Ha-ha!

-Oh, hello, Scrappz.

We need some pebbles but I'm in a bit of a rush.

-Could you go to the garden centre for me?

-Hee-hee!

-Oh, thank you!

Ah, Scrappz, there you are, thank you.

-Ha-ha, hee-hee.

-Perfect, some pebbles!

We'll also need some paint and some brushes...

..and lots of coloured paper and card.

OK then, Morgan, let's make a scrunched up countryside,

like this one here.

Wow, look at it...beautiful.

-All right, Morgan, are you ready?

-Yeah!

Brilliant. Are you ready? Fantastic. Let's get making.

Take some blue and green paper and we scrunch up

the mountain and hill shapes first, OK?

Let's have a look at them. Look, they're all crinkly

which gives them interesting shapes and details.

All right, let's get scrunching.

There you go. Scrunch that.

When you've finished scrunching,

bring in some card to stick your mountains and hills to.

Let's arrange them and when we're happy with them

stick them down with tape. Let's start with that mountain.

Can you put some tape on there?

Well done. And another bit of tape, please.

Now we can place twigs, leaves and flowers

around our scrunched-up mountains and hills.

We can even put them here, in the gaps between the shapes.

Now, this adds colour to our countryside.

All right, Morgan, you can find twigs, leaves and flowers.

We'll put them all in place and we'll stick them down with..?

-Sticky tape.

-That's right. Let's find some.

That'll be nice. I'll put that in place. In there will be nice.

Now we can add pebbles and stones to look like rocks.

Now we need to make a very special mixture

that's half gloopy glue and half paint.

We'll use blue paint for this

because this mixture is going to be our water.

All right, Morgan, you can help with this.

Here's a cup. Make the special mixture, please,

and put in some gloopy glue first. That's it, put in a big squirt.

Give it a stir with the paint brush.

Good mixing, Morgan, it's now time to pour that mixture

over our countryside

to make a waterfall and a lake.

OK then, here we go.

It looks great!

And, when it's all dried, you have a wonderful waterfall and a lake.

For a bit of extra detail we can brush on white paint

to make ripples and waves in the water.

There, it's all finished. It's a super scrunched-up countryside!

And you can use this idea in lots of different ways.

How about making a beach with a cardboard boat and paper sand dunes?

Or why not make a seaside harbour with a pebbly beach

and paper sailing boats?

-Why don't you try one? All right, Morgan, did you enjoy that?

-Yeah.

Brilliant. We made it and now your home is where the art is. High five!

Oh, this is a lovely day for a drive out in the Makermobile, isn't it?

-Squawk!

-Minute-make time!

Hey, it's minute-make time. I'm on my way!

Here we are.

-It's minute-make time, everyone!

-ALL: Yeah!

Ha-ha! I love basketball.

In fact, I'm rather good at it.

CRASH! Oh! Sorry!

I think I need more practise but that's a good thing

because today we're going to make this! It's a mini basketball game

and we can make it in just one minute by using these things.

Some tissue paper, some modelling clay,

a net bag - this is the type that fruit normally comes in.

A long strip of card, a long thin cardboard tube and some sticky tape.

Now, do you think it's possible to make this mini basketball game

-in just one minute?

-ALL: No way!

Let's find out. I'll have to be quick.

Don't worry! I'll remind you how to do it at the end. Are you ready?

-ALL: Yeah!

-Are you ready?

Great! Let's make it in a minute.

ALL: Three, two, one, go!

Start the clock! First we get our strip

and then our piece of net like that

and we lay it on top and get a bit of sticky tape,

a long piece, and stick the net to the strip

and then curl it into a loop,

making sure that the net's inside,

we can stick it together with sticky tape.

There we go. Brilliant.

Let's put that there and get our tube.

We'll put some sticky tape on here, like that.

And then stick our tube onto our hoop like that.

Now we get our modelling clay and squish it down.

If we put our tube into there we're nearly ready

but we need a ball.

Get our tissue paper and open it up and then

scrunch it into a ball, like that.

We need a bit of sticky tape to stick it together.

We've got a ball and a mini basketball game!

ALL: Yeah!

Phew, I made it...just!

But if you've got more than a minute, you could paint it stripy

like this, very nice.

Or you could even stick your net onto a painted cardboard wall.

Mini basketball games made in a minute.

Why don't you make one? Here's a reminder of how to do it.

Let's go back to the beginning and take a look.

Stick the netting onto a strip of card.

Tape the card into a hoop.

Stick the hoop onto a cardboard tube

and push the other end into the modelling clay.

Screw up a ball of tissue paper and tape it together

and your mini basketball game is finished.

Why don't you make it in a minute?

And when you have made it, you can play with it.

All you have got to do is throw the ball through the hoop.

-ALL: Yeah!

for a big surprise?!

These Mini Makers have no idea that we're making something very special.

Let's give them a big surprise.

-Hello!

-ALL: Ha-ha!

Hello, it's great to meet you and I am glad you were so surprised

-ALL: Ha-ha!

I thought a "boo" might make them jump but you giggled!

That must mean you're just the Mini Makers I need.

I think we should make a spooky house together.

-Will you help me?

-ALL: Yeah!

Fantastic! All right then. Leila, Leon, Sophia, Iman

and Emannuel, let's make it!

Mini Makers, we're making a big spooky house.

So what colour should it be?

-I think it should be purple.

-Purple! That's a lovely idea.

-What should we make to go round our house?

-A pop-out ghost.

A pop-out ghost! What can we use to make our ghosts?

Oh, this! But we'll need something underneath this.

Ah, great! There we go.

Catch, Leon! Good catch. I think we're ready, aren't we, Mini Makers?

-ALL: Yes!

-Come on then, let's make it.

We're making the spooky house.

I'm making a ghost.

I'm making the moon.

Now we'll need a spooky background.

Lovely, all right, in you come, Mini Makers. That's it.

This big surprise has been great fun

so why don't you join in and make your very own mini make?

Try making a funny paper ghost. It looks really spooky.

Make it, play with it, have fun with it. To make one you will need...

some tissue paper and kitchen foil. Sticky tape, some googly eyes,

a pencil, a sticker, some modelling clay,

elastic, scissors

and a large plate.

First, draw around the plate onto a square of tissue paper.

Do the same again with another piece of tissue in a different colour.

Then carefully cut around the lines to make tissue paper circles.

Fold the circles in half, keeping them together.

Once, twice, three times

and a fourth time to make a thin triangle shape.

Then take the kitchen foil and the elastic.

If you don't have elastic, you could use wool.

Tape the elastic onto the foil and scrunch the foil up into a ball.

Now unfold the tissue paper circles.

Take some modelling clay and make a hole in the middle with a pencil.

Thread the elastic through the holes.

This is a bit fiddly so you may need an adult to help you.

Cut a round sticker in half and stick it on for a smiley mouth.

Then stick on the googly eyes

and you're ready to hang up your spooky ghost.

Why don't you try making a great little ghost?

But right now, let's see how our Mini Makers are getting on.

-Bring it in!
