We are in the Party Pad.

It's the perfect place for a party, so let's get arty!

Oh, hello, Scrappz, my friend. It's great to see you.

What do you think we should make our party about today?

I wonder if you've got any ideas?

Over here, Mini Makers. Come on, my friends.

We'll show you some clues -

see if you can guess what our party is going to be about today.

What do you think it is? Let's have a look. What is it?

-MINI MAKERS:

-MINI MAKERS:

-Grasshopper.

I think it might be a praying mantis.

-MINI MAKERS:

-Centipede.

A centipede. And...?

-A fly.

Oh! Ha! There he is. It's my toy beetle Bernard.

So, my friends, what's our party going to be about today?

-Insects!

That's right. We are going to have an insect party today.

-ALL:

-Yeah!

Ha-ha! Hello, Scrappz. Look at you - you're being a bee.

So, my friends, let's put our thinking antenna on

and make an arty party picture.

-What shall we use today, my friends?

-Stickers.

-Pencils.

-Paper.

-What sort of insects could we make?

-Butterfly.

-Ladybird.

Where do insects live?

In the grass.

Well done, Mini Makers - some great ideas there.

In fact, that's just given me a brilliant idea.

Let's get arty at our party and make a brilliant bug picture

full of big, buzzy bugs hiding in the long grass.

But first, we'll need some things from...

-MINI MAKERS:

-The Doodle Tube!

We'll need coloured paper and card...

..some glue...

..a mug of tea...

A mug of tea? Doodle Tube!

We need bugs, not mugs!

Needs milk, anyway.

And we'll need stickers and a pen.

All right, then, many makers. Let's get started.

We are going to bring in some paper or card.

This will be our background and we can use it for the sky.

So, let's bring in this brown paper here

and tear a nice, long strip.

This is going to be our ground. Let's glue it on.

There we go. Now, we need to make some grass or plant stems.

We can do that by tearing out long strips from green paper.

Let's tear some nice, long strips, Mini Makers.

As wiggly as you like.

Thank you very much, Nathan. Let's do another one.

Here we go. Thank you very much. Let's do another one.

I'll put that there - there we go.

You can have one there. There we go.

Next, let's try a different colour.

And now, we need to glue them down.

Let's stick the last one down.

Now, Mini Makers, you'll see that some of the grass

is hanging over the sides of the card,

so carefully tear off the edges.

Next, we need to add some insects or bugs into our picture.

So we've got some shapes over here that I've already torn out.

I'm going to put some glue on here and then stick it on.

There we go. That's the body, but now, we need some wings.

Georgia, can you help me? We've got some wing shapes here.

Can you put glue on the back of them for me?

Thank you very much, Georgia. Let's stick them down.

Very nice. This is going to be a dragonfly,

but you can make any bug or insect you like.

Brilliant - so, our insect has got wings, but now it needs eyes.

-What can we use for eyes?

-Stickers.

-Stickers - brilliant!

Let's stick some stickers on. There's one.

And then another one.

You can add some extra detail, like pupils, with a pen.

You can add as many colourful insects as you like.

It looks really good, doesn't it, Mini Makers?

-MINI MAKERS:

-Yeah!

And now, you can make your very own arty party picture.

Well, lots of creepy crawlies here.

Sophie, your picture's really taking shape.

What is going to go on here?

-A butterfly.

-A butterfly on a paper spring.

-How did you make the paper spring?

-I got a piece of paper.

-I folded it one way, then the other, then again.

-Wow.

-And then I got some glue.

-Oh, yes.

I put it on the bottom and then stuck it down.

Wow! Very springy indeed. Well done, Sophie.

You keep making and I wonder...

Has anyone else ever had any arty ideas to do with insects?

Let's find out.

Many years ago, it was impossible to colour things bright red.

Oh, why oh why can't I make things red?

Then, one day, someone in Central America

came up with a brilliant idea.

Today cannot get any worse!

-BOING!

-Oh! Ow!

My finger - it is bleeding!

Oh - and the blood is very red.

Oh...ow!

Oh - and it is the same red of the deep red

of the beetle on the cactus.

Oh, a deep red beetle. Oh - that's it.

That's what we need!

It was discovered that the colour red

could be made out of a cochineal beetle that lives on a cactus.

Cochineal beetles were dried in the sun and crushed to make powder.

This bit is a real grind.

That should do it.

The powder was then added to things to make them bright red.

Hey, presto!

It's bright red.

In fact, it was used to colour things bright red for a very long time.

Bright red socks. Just what I need!

It's true - that's how red colouring used to be made.

But don't worry, Mini Makers - these days, we can make red dye

without squashing any beetles.

Now, let's see how the Mini Makers are getting on.

Esther, I love your picture. Let's show everyone.

-I've made a butterfly, a bee...

Oh, yes.

..a caterpillar, a ladybird

and a worm going into its hole.

Oh, I love the way you have used

a strip of wiggly brown paper

to show that the worm

is wiggling under the ground.

What creepy crawlies have you got here, my friend?

A worm, a spider, a butterfly and a bee, with paper wings.

Oh, yes. Great idea.

Noah, I love your buzzing bees. How did you make the stripes?

Well, I ripped out pieces of black and yellow paper

and stuck them overlapped to make them like stripes.

It's a brilliant idea and it really works.

Well done, my friend. SNORING

What's that noise? It sounds like snoring.

That's right. It's the Shapes. I think we should wake them up.

To make a bottle bug like this...

..twist three pipe cleaners together in the middle to make legs.

Then glued two plastic lids to the legs, like this,

to make the body.

Bend all the pipe cleaners to make knees...

..and use stickers to make eyes.

Your bottle bug is finished and ready to play with.

And you can make any bottle bug you want.

-A spider - I called it Party

cos I made it at the Arty Party.

Oh, he's very nice. He's got lots of coloured spots.

-How did you make those spots?

-I just used stickers.

I made a caterpillar. I made it two-headed

cos I thought it would be funkier.

It is a lot funkier.
