Mr Bloom's Nursery travelling fete is open. So, get set, grow!

Today I've brought my travelling fete to King's Lynn

and I'm off out to find some tiddlers.

you can see really well. You can see in the dark.

with your new telescope?

Well, I thought I'd discovered a whole new planet.

I was going to name it Princess Cabbage World.

But it was just Joan's lovely green hair.

Oh, I wouldn't say it was that lovely.

Oh! I'll never be a space explorer.

Margaret, you'll be a brilliant star spotter,

you just need a bit of practice, that's all.

You can only see stars in the night-time.

That is true, Raymond, they're a lot easier to see in the dark.

But I don't like the dark. It's all scary and creepy.

Hey, don't worry. Lots of things seem strange,

but there's nothing to be really scared of. KLAXON

This is exciting, Compo wants us to go to a very special place.

It's a place where the dark is actually useful.

-because its leaves are quite a lot like lettuce.

But that doesn't look like the chicory growing here.

What we want are the roots. Urgh!

It's these roots that are important.

Don't worry, my little butternut squash,

In fact, I can see some people who can help us out.

-We're planting some chicory roots.

And look, Raymond, these roots are fully grown

and can be used to grow the chicory you buy in the shops.

-Would you like a hand?

I don't think we'll squeeze many more roots in there.

Mr Bloom, what's that trickling sound?

But, you know, it's not just any old water.

No, because this water is full of goodness,

which means this chicory doesn't even need to be grown in soil. Look.

It's just grown in all this water.

Why is it so dark in here, Mr Bloom?

That is a very good question, Raymond. Well done.

Tiddlers, apart from water, what else do plants need to grow?

-Sunshine.

-Spot on!

When you grow chicory outside, it makes the leaves turn green,

but they don't taste very nice.

If you grow chicory inside where there's no sunshine

the leaves grow white. This is what it looks like.

Ohh! That's the chicory you can eat.

-Would you like to try some chicory?

-Yeah.

-There's some for you, David. Go on.

-Oh!

-Some for you, Milly.

Hey, what do you think it tastes like?

-BOTH: Yummy!

-Yummy. It tastes delicious.

Who'd have thought so much could happen in the dark.

And with a little help from my torch,

I can see everything so much more clearly.

It isn't scary at all!

I told you there was nothing to be scared of, but well done, you.

Now, I think it's time we got out of here, don't you?

Oh, it's much, much brighter back at my fete.

It's such a lovely, bright sunny day!

I can wear my new designer Dolce & Banana sunglasses.

And they help me see things better.

Everything's darker when I'm wearing these.

Need to make sure it's super tight. Just wrap it around a few times.

So she can look at the night sky and see all the stars.

But Margaret is a little bit afraid of the dark.

So she thinks she'll never be able to see any planets.

Have you ever been afraid of the dark?

-I am still afraid.

Hey, we saw vegetables growing in a very strange place.

-Well, it was scary at first,

everything was dark and I couldn't see,

but the tiddlers were ever so brave.

And did you see any stars?

No stars, Margaret, but we saw lots of vegetables called chicory.

They were growing in the darkness because it makes them taste better.

Yeah. And once we put on our head torches, we saw everything clearly.

-It wasn't scary at all, was it, Raymond?

-Oh, no, Mr Bloom.

But when you get used to the darkness, it can even be fun.

I really want to use my telescope now!

Do I have to wait until it's dark?

I can't think how else you'd see the stars. Can you, tiddlers?

-No.

-You have to wait for night-time to see the stars.

We made a tent. It had a plastic cover.

So maybe that's the way that Margaret can use her telescope.
