We need our magnifying glasses today

because we're on the lookout

for pests that have been spoiling my vegetables.

So keep your eyes peeled.

But what about those carrots over there?

Take a look at those.

-Do they look healthy and happy?

What's the matter with them?

-They've got a bump.

-They've got bumps and holes in.

-Yeah.

I pulled them up from a different part of the garden

and they're not very well at all.

Look here I've got one here and can you see?

-Someone's been nibbling away.

-It's the pests.

Yes, it is a pest.

It's called a carrot fly

and what he does is

he flies around my nursery

and he's sniffing out for my carrots.

HE IMITATES FLY

When he finds my carrots,

he lands on the ground and he buries down into the soil

and he lays his eggs in the soil.

And then the eggs hatch

and out come little maggots

and they wake up and start munching on my carrots

cos carrots, they're their favourite food,

and all my tasty carrots, they get ruined, don't they?

ALL: Yeah.

But, tiddlers, listen to this.

I've got a sneaky trick, which I'm going to play on the carrot flies.

Listen... who knows what this is?

-Apple? Onion.

-That's right, Harry. It's an onion.

Sniff that.

-Let me sniff.

-Yuck!

What's it like, Harry?

-Stinky pants.

-It's a bit of a ponger, isn't it?

Now, tiddlers, what I'm going to do

is to plant onions around my carrots.

It means that the carrot flies won't be able to smell the carrots

cos all they'll be able to smell is?

-Onion!

-Onions!

Can you tiddlers help me plant?

ALL: Yeah!

Let's make it amongst the carrots.

Pop it in there and then tuck it in.

There's your little onion bulb, Grace.
