I'm practising my magic for when the tiddlers get here!

Oh, are you trying to make that cupcake disappear?

Well, yes, but it's not working.

I'm saying lots of magic words, but nothing is happening.

-Am I getting them in the wrong order?

-Hmmmm, I don't know.

Ooh! Hang on, isn't that Captain Asparagus over there,

saving the day and generally being a really super superhero?!

Ooh! Captain Asparagus?! What? What? Where? Where?

Oh, dear, I missed Captain Asparagus.

He must have rushed off to do some more daring deeds!

Oh, I'm sorry to keep you,

but Compo and I have been busy this morning.

Well, er, what's your names?

It's Charlotte, we've got Zamri and we've got Elizabeth.

And, hey, can you tell me something?

Can you tell me why I might have all these cardboard tubes?

-So you can recycle them.

-Wow. Well, I am recycling them.

They've all been used, and now I've got them in my nursery,

but what might I use them for?

Could I be using them as special containers for,

perhaps storing my favourite seeds in?

I could put them in there, and keep them all safe.

Would that work?

-No, they've gone on the floor!

-The seeds are on the floor.

They're not good for that. How about this?

I could use them as gloves. Put them on my fingers, like this.

When I need gloves, I'll get some of these. Woo-hoo-hoo!

-No.

-And then I could use this for my... Ooh! Oh, dear.

-I can't pick anything up in those, can I?

-No.

I was hoping you'd say that. Come on.

All right, then, tiddlers.

Let's have a look at my prized carrots. Mmm.

They're growing in this bed.

Carrots, when they're growing down,

like to push into the ground without bumping into anything.

If they do bump into things, they can grow into funny shapes.

Look at these funny carrots!

-It's gone twirly-whirly.

-It's gone all twirly-whirly!

He's crossed his legs.

To make sure that my juicy crop of carrots is safe,

I use these cardboard tubes and I fill it full of compost

so that means that the carrot can grow freely down into the ground

-without bumping into anything.

-Is it like a knight's shield?

That's right. It's like a shield, a shield for the carrots.

But there's an even better trick.

-This carrot is almost fully grown. Shall we pull it up?

-Yeah!

But be careful. Pull it slowly.

-OK. We'll pull it slowly.

-So it doesn't break.

-Yeah, we don't want it to break.

-No.

Here it comes.

Hey! Here it is.

Look! Can you see the cardboard tube?

Wow! Look what's happened, tiddlers.

What do you think has happened to the tube?

It came off the carrot.

This is all we've got left of the cardboard tube!

It's all gone. Where do you think that cardboard tube has gone?

-In the mud.

-Right.

Because the cardboard tube has been in the ground for a good while,

it's started to rot away and decompose.

This is what's left. All the goodness in a cardboard tube

gets returned to the ground and that's how nature recycles itself.

In fact, it's like a magic disappearing trick. Ta-da!

Ooh, Mr Bloom and the tiddlers are talking about magic.

I can't wait for them to come, then I can show them

my magic disappearing trick.

No time to hang about.

-Compo, that's right!

So, Joan can sneak out the back

and it would look like she'd disappeared!
