and Christian Fuchs. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:00
See you! | 0:00:00 | 0:00:07
Morning, I'm Ricky. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:08
Coming up on Newsround... | 0:00:08 | 0:00:09
The girls grilling the supermarkets
about plastic packaging. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
The guys taking advantage
of flooding in Paris. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
And the kangaroo and the pillowcase. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:21
Some big supermarkets in the UK
are promising to do more to help cut | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
the amount of plastic we use
and throw away, but they haven't | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
met these two yet! | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
They're determined to make sure food
stores change their ways. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
Hi, I'm Amy. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:43
And I'm Ella. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
And we're here today
on a bit of a mission. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
Every year, UK supermarkets use
a million tonnes of plastic. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
And all that plastic
is seriously harming our planet. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
We want them to make a change. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
Iceland is one of the
big UK supermarkets. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
They say they want to cut the amount
of plastic that they use. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
So we've come to grill one
of their bosses to see | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
if they are doing enough. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
We know that wasting
plastic is really bad, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
so why do you use so much of it
in your shops? | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
Because that's what we've been used
to for the last 30 years, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
we've been using plastics
all the time. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
It's not right, now, but it's just
something that we used, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
moving away from traditional
materials like paper and board. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
See, the reason we are so passionate
about this is because plastic, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
when it's thrown away,
is really harmful to the planet. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:31
It doesn't rot like paper or food. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
So we end up with
mountains of the stuff. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
Animals get trapped in it,
it is eaten by fish in our seas. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
And if it's the sort of plastic
that can be recycled, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
it means making more and more of it. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
Supermarkets are making some
changes, though, like trying to make | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
more packaging recyclable. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
Iceland say that in five years,
all of its own products | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
will be plastic free. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
Five years is quite a long time. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
Now, by that point we'll be around
17 and 19 years old. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
So why aren't you doing it now? | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
Why is it taking this long? | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
Because the materials
are just not available. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
We'd love to do it now. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
So if we go in and say "Right,
we're changing direction and we're | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
going to another material"
and that's more expensive, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
we don't think the consumer
is going to pay for that. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
If it's only your products that
are going to become plastic free, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
what about everything else? | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
Are your shops still going to be
completely full of plastic? | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
We're trying to get
rid of all plastic. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
We're going to push the other brands
that you see around the store, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
we're going to push everybody
to do it. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
Plastic has been a problem
for years, so why is the change only | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
starting to happen now? | 0:02:35 | 0:02:36
Blue Planet came along,
we all watched it and we were | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
shattered, weren't we? | 0:02:38 | 0:02:39
We're killing sea turtles,
we're killing seals. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
Yes, we're on it. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
We are already looking at things,
we are already changing things, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
but when Blue Planet came on,
I think everyone was aware than that | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
we've got a problem. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
Thank you very much. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
Well, it was great to hear
what Ian had to say, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
and to hear about all the changes
that Iceland are making. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
It just seems to lack that sense
of important urgency. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
Yeah, Ian said some good
stuff but I just can't | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
imagine a place like this
being completely plastic free. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
So there's still a lot of steps
that Iceland and other | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
supermarkets need to take. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
I just wish it could happen sooner. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:19
Some great questions, girls. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
If you want to find out more
about plastic and why it can | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
be bad for the planet,
we've got a full guide online. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29

you about France's heaviest | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
rainfall in 50 years,
which flooded parts of Paris | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
with some places still underwater. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:35
But while the floods have been a bit
of a nightmare for some - | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
these wakeboarders took the chance
to practice just outside | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
their house in the capital. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
The River Seine has risen
about six metres above normal | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46

Now some more freaky weather... | 0:03:52 | 0:03:56
Snow on palm trees! | 0:03:56 | 0:04:02
These pics are from the North
African country of Morocco. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
It's the first time they've
seen snow in the south | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
of the country in 50 years. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:08
This little kangaroo
is taking his very first hops. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
Bradley has been taking
the internet by storm. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
The cute little guy is an orphan,
so he's being looked | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
after at the Kangaroo Sanctuary
in Alice Springs, Australia. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
When he gets tired he jumps
into a pillowcase that's standing | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
in for his mum's pouch. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
Awwww... | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
I want one! | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
Just enough time to tell you to head
online, where our big question this | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
week is all about Lego
and who invented it. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
Plus this weekend sees one
of the biggest sporting | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
events in the world! | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
