Happy New Year, guys, Ricky here with the first Newsround of 2017.

Here's what's coming up this Tuesday.

We check out what 2017 has got in store in pop, news and TV.

And we meet the kids in India getting glasses from a special van.

Now you know on Newsround we've got things covered,

so there's no better way to get things started than with a rundown

of some of things to look forward to this year.

Move over 2016, it's all about 2017.

First up, it's time for Donald Trump to take over

from Barack Obama as the president of the United States.

He'll take the oath of office on January 20th, and become

America's 45th president.

Next, let's go to the Alpine World Ski Championships in February.

They take place in the snowy mountains of Switzerland.

Brr, I bet that's a bit chilly!

The Formula 1 season begins in March, down under.

The championship is up for grabs with world champ Nico Rosberg

retiring from the sport.

Hotting up, July 1st marks the start of the 104th Tour de France.

This year the course is steeper than normal.

Do you know, I think I'm going to leave that up

to the cycling pros.

Also kicking off in July, the Netherlands host

the Uefa Women's Euro 2017.

It's the first final tournament to involve an increased 16 teams.

Little Mix became their Glory Days tour in Aberdeen two months later.

But not before British band The Vamps have started their world

tour here in April.

And to finish, although we said goodbye to head judge Len Goodman,

Strictly will lead our run-up to Christmas.

Seven!

And that's not all that is going on in 2017, so be sure to stay tuned

Here in the UK, wearing glasses to help you see and read

is perfectly normal.

But for young children in poor parts of India,

getting help with eye problems is very difficult.

Now a new scheme is trying to change that.

This is a part of Northern India called Uttar Pradesh.

It's very large and many people here are poor.

Going to school and learning is a way out of poverty

for children in the area, but sometimes something incredibly

simple gets in the way.

Children with bad eyesight are not able to follow lessons at school,

and because the area is so poor they are unable to get glasses

or the help they need.

TRANSLATION: I feel upset when I cannot study, which I love.

Because my eyes hurt when I try to read for more than an hour,

my interest in studying is also dwindling.

There is only eye hospital in the region and some parents

cannot afford to take the children there.

But help is at hand.

This is the Orbis Vision Van.

A mobile one-stop shop to help children with vision problems.

They are doing the first ever eye tests at schools in the region.

The chart they use is so simple, one letter that gets

smaller and smaller.

You just have to show which way the letter is pointing,

so children can take the test even if they can't read yet.

TRANSLATION: It was an E on the chart but it was blurry.

I felt anxious when I could not read from the chart clearly.

I'm not sure why, but I felt so.

Suhatee can now get her eyes examined and measured for glasses.

Sehrish also had problems with her vision, but she was able

to get help at the van and has now had her specs for two months.

When she grows up she now wants to be an eye doctor.

TRANSLATION: Before I would copy the notes down from my friends.

But now, my friends tell me that you don't need

to copy notes from us.

In fact some of them copy the notes I take down nowadays.

Meanwhile Suhatee and her school friend Kajan have chosen

their new specs and are excited to show them off.

TRANSLATION: I was really happy when I got my glasses.

TRANSLATION: Even I felt really happy to get my glasses.

Glasses here give these girls the chance to learn and get

jobs when they're older.

The first Vision Van has been so successful that a second

one has been launched, and the future is looking a little

clearer for these kids.
