Happy New Year, guys, Ricky here with the first Newsround of 2017.

0:00:030:00:06

Here's what's coming up this Tuesday.

0:00:060:00:09

We check out what 2017 has got in store in pop, news and TV.

0:00:090:00:15

We meet the kids in India getting glasses from a special van.

0:00:150:00:17

And imagine living on the world's steepest street!

0:00:170:00:20

Now you know on Newsround we've got things covered,

0:00:280:00:31

so let's get the year started with some of the stuff we can

0:00:310:00:35

look forward to in 2017.

0:00:350:00:38

Move over 2016, it's all about 2017.

0:00:380:00:42

First up, it's time for Donald Trump to take over

0:00:420:00:46

from Barack Obama as the president of the United States.

0:00:460:00:50

He'll take the oath of office on January 20th, and become

0:00:500:00:53

America's 45th president.

0:00:530:00:55

Next, let's go to the Alpine World Ski Championships in February.

0:00:550:01:00

They take place in the snowy mountains of Switzerland.

0:01:000:01:02

Brr, I bet that's a bit chilly!

0:01:020:01:06

The Formula 1 season begins in March, down under.

0:01:060:01:09

The championship is up for grabs with world champ Nico Rosberg

0:01:090:01:12

retiring from the sport.

0:01:120:01:15

Hotting up, July 1st marks the start of the 104th Tour de France.

0:01:150:01:19

This year the course is steeper than normal.

0:01:190:01:22

Do you know, I think I'm going to leave that up

0:01:220:01:25

to the cycling pros.

0:01:250:01:27

Also kicking off in July, the Netherlands host

0:01:270:01:30

the Uefa Women's Euro 2017.

0:01:300:01:32

It's the first final tournament to involve an increased 16 teams.

0:01:320:01:36

Little Mix begin their Glory Days tour in Aberdeen two months later.

0:01:360:01:39

But not before British band The Vamps have started their world

0:01:390:01:44

tour here in April.

0:01:440:01:46

And to finish, although we said goodbye to head judge Len Goodman,

0:01:460:01:49

Strictly will lead our run-up to Christmas.

0:01:490:01:53

Seven!

0:01:530:01:54

And that's not all that is going on in 2017, so be sure to stay tuned

0:01:540:01:58

to Newsround to find out what else is going to happen

0:01:580:02:01

throughout the year.

0:02:010:02:03

So that's just some of what's coming up in 2017.

0:02:030:02:06

And we want to know what you're looking forward to?

0:02:060:02:08

Maybe it's a sporting event, a new hobby or a special trip.

0:02:080:02:11

Get on over to Newsround online and let us know.

0:02:110:02:16

Let's look at some football and after Christmas and New Year,

0:02:160:02:19

Chelsea are still top of the Premier League.

0:02:190:02:22

Liverpool missed the chance to go ahead of them

0:02:220:02:24

after Jermain Defoe scored two penalties to give Sunderland a 2-2

0:02:240:02:28

draw at the Stadium of Light.

0:02:280:02:33

Manchester City are third after beating Burnley 3-1 with this

0:02:330:02:35

great goal from Sergio Aguero.

0:02:350:02:38

Fernandinho got sent off during the match and afterwards

0:02:380:02:41

the manager Pep Guardiola seemed pretty fed up.

0:02:410:02:45

What was your view of the red card for Fernandinho?

0:02:450:02:47

You are the journalist, not me.

0:02:470:02:49

You're the manager, I'm sure the fans would like to know.

0:02:490:02:51

Ask the referee, not me.

0:02:510:02:53

You don't seem that happy that you've won.

0:02:530:02:55

More than you believe.

0:02:550:02:57

More than you believe, I'm happy.

0:02:570:02:59

You aren't showing it.

0:02:590:03:01

I'm so happy, believe me, I'm so happy.

0:03:010:03:02

Happy New Year.

0:03:020:03:06

Now some experts say we're eating half the sugar we should have

0:03:060:03:10

all day before we've even got to lunch!

0:03:100:03:13

Public Health England says breakfasts like sugary cereals

0:03:130:03:16

and juices are to blame.

0:03:160:03:20

Here in the UK, wearing glasses to help you see and read

0:03:200:03:23

is perfectly normal.

0:03:230:03:24

But for young children in poor parts of India,

0:03:240:03:26

getting help with eye problems is very difficult.

0:03:260:03:29

Now a new scheme is trying to change that.

0:03:290:03:33

This is a part of Northern India called Uttar Pradesh.

0:03:330:03:37

It's very large and many people here are poor.

0:03:370:03:40

Going to school and learning is a way out of poverty

0:03:400:03:45

for children in the area, but sometimes something incredibly

0:03:450:03:47

simple gets in the way.

0:03:470:03:50

Children with bad eyesight are not able to follow lessons at school,

0:03:500:03:54

and because the area is so poor they are unable to get glasses

0:03:540:03:58

or the help they need.

0:03:580:04:01

TRANSLATION: I feel upset when I cannot study, which I love.

0:04:010:04:04

Because my eyes hurt when I try to read for more than an hour,

0:04:040:04:07

my interest in studying is also dwindling.

0:04:070:04:10

There is only one eye hospital in the region and some parents

0:04:100:04:12

cannot afford to take the children there.

0:04:120:04:16

But help is at hand.

0:04:160:04:18

This is the Orbis Vision Van.

0:04:180:04:21

A mobile one-stop shop to help children with vision problems.

0:04:210:04:24

They are doing the first ever eye tests at schools in the region.

0:04:240:04:28

The chart they use is so simple, one letter that gets

0:04:280:04:32

smaller and smaller.

0:04:320:04:34

You just have to show which way the letter is pointing,

0:04:340:04:36

so children can take the test even if they can't read yet.

0:04:360:04:40

TRANSLATION: It was an E on the chart but it was blurry.

0:04:400:04:44

I felt anxious when I could not read from the chart clearly.

0:04:440:04:47

I'm not sure why, but I felt so.

0:04:470:04:50

Suhatee can now get her eyes examined and measured for glasses.

0:04:500:04:54

Sehrish also had problems with her vision, but she was able

0:04:540:04:58

to get help at the van and has now had her specs for two months.

0:04:580:05:01

When she grows up she now wants to be an eye doctor.

0:05:010:05:04

TRANSLATION: Before I would copy the notes down from my friends.

0:05:040:05:07

But now, my friends tell me that you don't need

0:05:070:05:09

to copy notes from us.

0:05:090:05:11

In fact some of them copy the notes I take down nowadays.

0:05:110:05:14

Meanwhile Suhatee and her school friend Kajan have chosen

0:05:140:05:16

their new specs and are excited to show them off.

0:05:160:05:20

TRANSLATION: I was really happy when I got my glasses.

0:05:200:05:22

TRANSLATION: Even I felt really happy to get my glasses.

0:05:220:05:26

Glasses here give these girls the chance to learn and get

0:05:260:05:29

jobs when they're older.

0:05:290:05:30

The first Vision Van has been so successful that a second

0:05:300:05:34

one has been launched, and the future is looking a little

0:05:340:05:36

clearer for these kids.

0:05:360:05:40

Finally, imagine living at the top of this street.

0:05:400:05:42

It's been named the world's steepest residential road.

0:05:420:05:45

Baldwin Street in New Zealand is so steep that walking

0:05:450:05:48

to the top isn't an easy task.

0:05:480:05:52

Spare a thought for the local postman!

0:05:520:05:56

That's all from me, Newsround's back at 4.20pm.
