You're watching a special Newsround with me Ricky,

:00:12.:00:15.

live in Belgium on the day millions remember World War One.

:00:16.:00:21.

Today marks exactly 100 years since Britain joined the First World War.

:00:22.:00:27.

I'm here in the city of Mons - where the first big battle involving

:00:28.:00:31.

Behind me is the St Symphorien war cemetery, where final preparations

:00:32.:00:35.

are underway for a special ceremony of remembrance later this evening.

:00:36.:00:43.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate, will be attending.

:00:44.:00:51.

This morning in Liege in Belgium, world leaders from 50 countries

:00:52.:01:05.

gathered to mark the invasion of Belgium 100 years ago.

:01:06.:01:09.

Balloons were released in memory of the lives lost on the battlefields -

:01:10.:01:13.

and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were there, too.

:01:14.:01:23.

We were enemies more than once in the last century, and be sold at

:01:24.:01:31.

those who died to give us their freedom.

:01:32.:01:35.

In Scotland, Prince Charles and the Prime Minister David Cameron

:01:36.:01:37.

were at a special service at Glasgow Cathedral, which

:01:38.:01:39.

remembered the part the Commonwealth nations played in the war.

:01:40.:01:42.

In Kent, Prince Harry unveiled a memorial arch in Folkestone -

:01:43.:01:44.

where a parade followed the route taken by millions of soldiers who

:01:45.:01:48.

marched to the harbour to begin their voyage to France in WW1.

:01:49.:01:55.

Kids all over the UK have been learning about what

:01:56.:01:58.

happened 100 years ago - and why it's so important to remember those

:01:59.:02:01.

There have only been two World Wars. I think it is really important. It

:02:02.:02:25.

is quite scale, I would not want anyone I know to go through that. I

:02:26.:02:32.

think it is important that we remember this. Here in Mons, some

:02:33.:02:44.

children are preparing to deliver a song that decomposed themselves. You

:02:45.:02:48.

only have a fewer errors, how are you feeling? -- a few hours. We are

:02:49.:03:00.

nearly there and it is so exciting. Tell us about the song. I was

:03:01.:03:08.

inspired by the whole experience, and it is all about hope and peace.

:03:09.:03:15.

I think it is going to be a good song to commemorate this event. And

:03:16.:03:27.

you must be proud of these guys? They have written the perfect song

:03:28.:03:32.

for this very daunting occasion. It is going to go very well and we are

:03:33.:03:39.

really excited. You have done a lot of research, read some postcards?

:03:40.:03:45.

How did you feel? It made us think about what it was like. We never

:03:46.:03:49.

knew about some of the horrible things that happened. It opened our

:03:50.:03:55.

eyes. It was horrible to think that they had to keep positive, and about

:03:56.:04:00.

how it got, but that helped us. Good luck. I look forward to hearing it.

:04:01.:04:14.

Well a lot is happening today to mark the centenary.

:04:15.:04:17.

Yes Ricky, the services and ceremonies will continue this

:04:18.:04:20.

Here at Westminster Abbey in London, from 10pm there will be a special

:04:21.:04:24.

And while that service is going on, all over the UK public buildings,

:04:25.:04:29.

businesses and people in their homes will turn

:04:30.:04:31.

off their lights for an hour, to leave just a single candle burning.

:04:32.:04:34.

In the cathedral behind me, at 11pm, there'll be a special moment to

:04:35.:04:37.

mark the exact time Britain declared war on Germany in 1914.

:04:38.:04:54.

That is all from me. You can help the song later on at 6:30pm.

:04:55.:04:59.
