Hello, I'm Ayshah
and this is Newsround. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:24
First up, a year ago,
11-year-old Raghba had | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
never even played Squash. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
But now she's dreaming of playing
for her country Syria. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
Whitney's got this... | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
She trains almost every day,
focusing on her game and working to | 0:00:32 | 0:00:37
be quicker on her feet. But five
years ago, life was very different | 0:00:37 | 0:00:42
for Raghba and her family when they
were forced to leave their home town | 0:00:42 | 0:00:48
of homes because of the Civil War in
Syria. They moved across the border | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
to Jordan where they first lived in
refugee camp. It was when they moved | 0:00:52 | 0:00:59
to the outskirts of the city that
Raghba and two of her sisters got | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
the chance to try squash. She now
plays in a team of four girls, and | 0:01:03 | 0:01:09
it's not all about the sports. We
have trading five times a week, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:14
squash and English, to help them
become competitive squash players so | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
they can compete in squash
tournament here in Jordan and around | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
the world. And we want them to
achieve academic status they can in | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
role in schools. Squash is in a very
popular sport in Syria both people | 0:01:24 | 0:01:32
played in other countries in the
middle East. But now Raghba and her | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
team-mates are now hoping to one day
go back to Syria and share their | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
love of the sport. TRANSLATION: It's
been six months since I played | 0:01:39 | 0:01:44
squash and this is my first
tournament. I want to play around | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
the world and go back to Syria and
become a coach. I want to take part | 0:01:47 | 0:01:52
in Arab and foreign tournaments. I
like sport, and especially squash, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:58
because when I grow up I want to
travel and compete in tournaments | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
around the world and make Syria and
my family proud. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:07
Best of luck, girls, I hope you
smash it! | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
Next, we're celebrating
sporty girls here and now | 0:02:10 | 0:02:15
off to meet Jessica,
who | 0:02:15 | 0:02:16 | |
lives in Liberia in West Africa
where girls haven't traditionally | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
played football, but she's hoping
to help change that... | 0:02:19 | 0:02:25
Hi, my name is Jessica. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
Welcome to my home. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
Jessica's ten years old. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:32
She lives in West Point, which is
the biggest slum in Liberia. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:36
This is where I started playing
football when I was six years old. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
She was spotted by a talent
scout and has spent | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
the last couple of years
at the Monrovia football academy. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
It's the first one in Africa to take
on both boys and girls. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
In West Africa, the female football
is not well structured, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
but this is what we're trying
to change, to give the girls access | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
to opportunities out there. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
When they're playing good football,
they can have opportunities | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
of a professional football contract. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
I fell in love with football
because I want to be | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
a good football player,
and I love football very much. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:13
Nearly two thirds of children
in Liberia have never been | 0:03:13 | 0:03:19
to school, so the academy helps
with learning off the pitch, too. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
Jessica's had the chance to play
in international games, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
and it's her dream to one day be
part of one of Europe's | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
biggest clubs, Real Madrid. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
You go, girl! | 0:03:33 | 0:03:40
One of the UK's biggest
supermarkets is trying a new way | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
of tackling food waste.
Dry and tinned goods like pasta | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
and soup that are still ok to eat
are being sold for 10p. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
But it won't apply to fresh
foods like fruit and veg. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
The Co-op says they want to lower
the amount of waste | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
that we throw away. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:55
Want to get into the Christmas
mood, watch this... | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
You can thank me later. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
It's no loving Santa Clauss. These
guys have all dressed up for a | 0:04:04 | 0:04:10
charity do at these key resort. I'm
pretty sure Basantas shouted ho, ho, | 0:04:10 | 0:04:22
ho as they bombed it down the
slopes. Look at them snow, I mean | 0:04:22 | 0:04:27
go!
What a terrible joke! | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
Finally meet Fafa the lovable giant
panda from China... | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
Who's is pretty good
at entertaining himself. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
His keepers at the zoo
say most of the | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
pandas are pretty quiet and Fafa
loves playing around with a ball | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
or climbing up trees. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:41
He is the only male panda
at the Lianoning Shenyang Forest | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
Zoo, and he also loves a good ol
stretch and a snooze. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
But he hates carrots! | 0:04:46 | 0:04:47
I feel your pain Fafa.. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:50
I don't like them either. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
That's the latest from
the Newsround Team, I'll be | 0:04:52 | 0:04:54
back at 7:40am tomorrow
with Tuesday's top stories. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
See you soon, bye-bye. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00 |
