Good morning guys, Martin
here with Monday's top stories. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
Coming up... | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
The six-year-old British
girl who's won an Oscar. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:16
The class sleeping in the cold to
highlight the issue of homelessness. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
Plus we take a look
at Messi's 600th goal. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:26
First, six-year-old Maisie
from Swindon has just found out | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
the film she stars in has
won an Oscar. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:41
She's over in LA in America
with all the stars! | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
Maisie is deaf, the same
as the character she plays | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
in The Silent Child. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:47
Newsround is with her in Hollywood. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:48
The Silent Child, Chris Overton
and Rachel Shenton! | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
This was the moment the team
behind the film found out | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
they'd won an Oscar. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:57
I made a promise to our six-year-old
lead actress that I'd sign | 0:00:57 | 0:01:02
the speech, and my hands are shaking
so I apologise. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:07
So who's the six-year-old
she's talking about? | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
It's a story so happy it could have
been the plot of a Hollywood movie. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
Maisie hadn't even acted before,
then her parents were told | 0:01:18 | 0:01:25
about the film looking for deaf
children to star in it. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
And now here are the nominees
for Best Live Action Short Film... | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
This is the moment the film team
found out they'd been | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
nominated for an Oscar. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
My Nephew Emmett. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
The Silent Child... | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
CHEERING. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:54
And so, Maisie, along
with her cuddly toy... | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
Welcome onboard! | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
..made her way to LA
to take her place as part | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
of Hollywood history. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:09
When she got there, she made sure
she did all the important things. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
And last night was the big night. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
We're so thrilled to be here,
and that we've managed | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
to put this subject,
which largely isn't talked about, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
in front of a mainstream audience. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
So how are they feeling
about the big win? | 0:02:25 | 0:02:31
The film's writer, Rachel Shenton,
says it's amazing to win, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
and she's so proud of the team
behind the film for bringing | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
the topic of deafness
to a huge audience. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
She told us she's surprised Maisie
managed to stay awake | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
for the announcement,
because the ceremony was so late! | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
But that she was shouting
with excitement. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
What a fantastic achievement! | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
Let's hope Maisie wasn't too tired
to join in with the celebrations. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:57
Next, snow has caused
problems across the UK, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
but it's a huge problem for those
without homes, living | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
on the streets. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
Newsround caught up with some
students who wanted to do something | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
to help the homeless. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
Ladies first. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
OK. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:11 | |
I'm supposed to go first
and you said, "Ladies..." | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
Yeah, ladies first, on about myself! | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
Oh. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18 | |
They're having a mass sleep out
in solidarity for young people | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
who find themselves homeless. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
We can't replicate what homeless
people have to go through, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
because nobody should have to go
through that, but we're | 0:03:26 | 0:03:30
sleeping on the floor
and the heating is off, | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
and phones, no, MP3 players,
none of that, at all. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:38
I think the most challenging thing
that will happen tonight is sleeping | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
on the ground because most people,
like me, I'm used | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
to sleeping on a bed. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
I think the most challenging thing
for me is trying to keep warm. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
Tonight, the thing that I'm
going to miss the most is my family, | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
because I usually have them there. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:58
I think the students will get
a really small flavour of what it | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
might be like to sleep
without their home comforts, | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
put themselves in the shoes
of someone who's experiencing life | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
on the streets. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:07
I can't wait until the morning
because I'm not going to wake | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
up, it's too early,
and it's the weekend. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:18
On a scale of one to ten, I was one. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
It was awful, freezing
cold, I was hungry. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
I was about a three. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
I was minus five. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
I think if I was uncomfortable
inside on a cold wooden floor, | 0:04:34 | 0:04:39
then how is it for them
when they don't have | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
any sort of shelter? | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
I think it's going to be ten times,
even 100 times harder on people that | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
are sleeping outside,
with no home, no room, no shelter. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
More people should be
taking the time to talk | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
to them and try to get them
out of homelessness. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
I think it's giving me the best
insight because there's no other | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
experience to make you feel
what they're feeling. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:06
To football now, and Manchester City
are 18 points clear at the top | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
of the English Premier League
after beating Chelasa 1-0 | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
at the Etihad Stadium. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:13
This goal by Bernardo Silva
was the only thing that | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
seperated the teams. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:18
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has been
critisised for using negative | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
tactics against City,
after deciding to play | 0:05:21 | 0:05:22
without a striker. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:27
Lionel Messi, the five-time
World Footballer of the Year, | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
has hit another amazing record. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:31
This free kick against
Atletico Madrid yesterday not only | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
sent Barcelona eight points clear
in the Spanish league, | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
it was also his 600th goal
for his club and country. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
He's won eight La Liga titles,
four Champions Leagues | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
and five Spanish Cups. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:49
That's it from the Newsround
team this morning. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51
Ayshah will be back with loads more
when you get back from school. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:57
Enjoy the rest of your day, guys.
Buy. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:01 |
