# I don't care, I don't care... #

Smash it, own it.

0:00:000:00:00

Hi, I'm Martin and

this is Newsround.

0:00:100:00:14

First, have you ever

seen anything on YouTube

0:00:140:00:16

or YouTube Kids that worried you?

0:00:160:00:19

There's been lots of reports

about videos being put up

0:00:190:00:22

on the site that are not

suitable for children.

0:00:220:00:26

Some of you have seen upsetting

videos on there when you thought

0:00:260:00:29

you were watching

something meant for kids.

0:00:290:00:30

So, as part of Safer Internet Day,

Hayley decided to ask

0:00:300:00:33

YouTube what's going on.

0:00:330:00:38

Chardonnay, Lamar, Molly,

Siddique and Umema invited me

0:00:380:00:40

to their school to tell me

about their experiences on YouTube.

0:00:400:00:43

So we asked Katie

to come and meet us.

0:00:430:00:46

She's the director of policy

for Google who own YouTube.

0:00:460:00:50

So, first of all, can you tell us

how you are going to make it as safe

0:00:500:00:54

as possible for kids?

0:00:540:00:56

We've actually built a whole

new platform called YouTube Kids

0:00:560:00:58

where we take the best content,

the stuff that you're most

0:00:580:01:00

interested in, and put it

on there in a packaged-up place

0:01:000:01:03

just for kids.

0:01:030:01:04

These kids here have got stories

to tell you about their experiences

0:01:040:01:07

on YouTube and YouTube Kids.

0:01:070:01:08

So, Chardonnay, would

you like to go first?

0:01:080:01:10

I was on YouTube listening to a song

and an advert came up

0:01:100:01:13

with scary messages.

0:01:130:01:14

When I was on Kids YouTube,

I was watching a child-friendly

0:01:140:01:17

video by a YouTuber

who was quite famous.

0:01:170:01:19

In the video, the YouTuber

started swearing.

0:01:190:01:22

When I was on YouTube,

I logged into a kid-friendly video

0:01:220:01:25

about slime and a scary image popped

up of a clown with blood on it.

0:01:250:01:29

I felt really scared and I couldn't

sleep that day and I feel YouTube

0:01:290:01:34

should check the videos

because there are lots of children

0:01:340:01:38

from very different ages watching.

0:01:380:01:41

I think YouTube should watch it

before we watch it so kids

0:01:410:01:44

like me don't get scared.

0:01:440:01:49

All these guys have been upset

or hurt in some way by what they've

0:01:490:01:52

seen on YouTube and Kids YouTube,

so what have you got to say to them?

0:01:520:01:56

We don't want anyone to have a tough

or bad experience and we work really

0:01:560:01:59

hard to make sure people can see

the kind of content we want.

0:01:590:02:02

So I'm really sorry for all

of you who have had good experiences

0:02:020:02:06

on YouTube but also had bad

or tough experiences.

0:02:060:02:08

Isn't that too late for the kids?

0:02:080:02:09

They are seeing dangerous things

on YouTube and YouTube Kids.

0:02:090:02:12

Surely you have a responsibility

to check these things before

0:02:120:02:14

any child sees them?

0:02:140:02:16

We have a responsibility to make

sure that the platform can

0:02:160:02:18

survive and can thrive

and so that we have a collection

0:02:180:02:22

of content that comes

from around the world on there,

0:02:220:02:25

and we want people to be able to do

that in a safe and responsible way.

0:02:250:02:29

We also know that there is a diverse

amount of content on YouTube,

0:02:290:02:32

as there is on the wider internet,

and it wouldn't be fair if I sat

0:02:320:02:36

here and said to you,

"We can make it perfectly safe."

0:02:360:02:38

But things are still going wrong.

0:02:380:02:43

Kids are still seeing

things on Kids YouTube

0:02:430:02:43

that are inappropriate.

0:02:430:02:43

Do you need to work harder?

0:02:430:02:44

Do you need to do more?

0:02:440:02:46

Absolutely, we need to do more.

0:02:460:02:49

We need to do more to make sure

children are able to experience

0:02:490:02:52

the internet in a way that they feel

confident of, in a way

0:02:520:03:00

that they feel safe,

in a way that they feel

0:03:010:03:03

they can flag content

that isn't correct and they can

0:03:030:03:05

get their education and support

from us and from wider family

0:03:050:03:08

and friends and school too.

0:03:080:03:09

All these kids here have been

quite hurt and upset.

0:03:090:03:12

Some of them have not been

able to sleep at night

0:03:120:03:14

after what they saw on YouTube.

0:03:140:03:16

Would you like to take this

opportunity to say sorry to them

0:03:160:03:19

and other kids who might have

seen anything disturbing?

0:03:190:03:21

I find it very tough to hear that

you've seen and experienced things

0:03:210:03:24

that you didn't want to and that

you found really difficult on there.

0:03:240:03:27

I would really like to make

sure that that doesn't

0:03:270:03:29

happen again and I'm very,

very sorry for any hurt

0:03:290:03:32

or discomfort that you found

because that's not nice,

0:03:320:03:34

at any age.

0:03:340:03:35

While we're talking about staying

safe online, we know things

0:03:350:03:37

you see and hear online can

hurt your feelings or confuse you.

0:03:370:03:40

But that doesn't mean

you need to be scared.

0:03:400:03:42

Own It is a new BBC

website which can help.

0:03:420:03:45

So, head to bbc.com/ownit

for real-life stories,

0:03:450:03:47

advice from experts,

fun quizzes, and videos

0:03:470:03:51

with celebs and vloggers.

0:03:510:03:57

Next, 100 years ago today,

a change in the law gave women

0:03:570:04:01

in the UK the right to vote

in general elections

0:04:010:04:03

for the very first time.

0:04:030:04:04

They still didn't have the same

voting rights as men,

0:04:040:04:07

but this date marked an important

step towards getting equality

0:04:070:04:10

between men and women.

0:04:100:04:12

But what does equality mean?

0:04:120:04:13

We spoke to four women

to see what they say.

0:04:130:04:18

It means that if the boys can do

it, you can do it too.

0:04:180:04:23

Equality to me means listening

to everybody and valuing

0:04:230:04:26

what they have to say,

no matter who they are.

0:04:260:04:31

I think my very favourite

description of equality comes

0:04:310:04:34

from an indigenous tribe

in Latin America where they say,

0:04:340:04:38

our tribe is like an eagle,

an eagle has two wings,

0:04:380:04:46

one is male, one is female,

only when the two wings are equal

0:04:460:04:49

will our tribe fly true.

0:04:490:04:51

Equality to me means having equal

rights between both men and women

0:04:510:04:53

or whatever gender you identify as.

0:04:530:04:56

Equality is super important

to me and it should be

0:04:560:04:58

for all of you watching Newsround.

0:04:580:05:00

The reason is because

we do not have it yet.

0:05:000:05:02

If we don't consider

the voices of half the world,

0:05:020:05:05

we just miss out on the voices

of half the population.

0:05:050:05:13

I see it loads in school where girls

can't act the same way as boys or do

0:05:140:05:18

the same things and then they get

personally attacked by boys

0:05:180:05:20

and that's not really cool.

0:05:200:05:21

It's really important,

I think, that we live

0:05:210:05:23

in a society that's fair.

0:05:230:05:28

If you are gay, if you are not

white, lots of people

0:05:280:05:31

are still fighting to have equality.

0:05:310:05:33

We've got a long way

to go, but we are going

0:05:330:05:35

in the right direction.

0:05:350:05:41

And if you want to know about this

subject, then head online

0:05:410:05:43

where we've made some great videos

you can watch.

0:05:430:05:46

That's it from me.

0:05:460:05:47

We'll be back at 4.20, bye.
