Hi, I'm Hayley and
this is Newsround. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
First, have you ever
seen anything on YouTube | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
or YouTube Kids that worried you? | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
There s been lots of reports
about videos being put up | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
on the site that are not
suitable for children. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
Some of you have seen
upsetting videos on there, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
when you thought you were watching
something meant for kids. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
So as part of Safer Internet
Day, I decided to ask | 0:00:31 | 0:00:37
These kids invited me to their
school to tell me about their | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
experiences on YouTube. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
So we asked Katie
to come and meet us. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
She is the director
of policy for Google, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:52
who own YouTube. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
First of all, can you tell us
how you are going to | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
make it as safe
as possible for kids? | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
We have actually built a whole
new platform for kids, where we | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
take the best content, stuff that
you're most interested in, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
and put it in there on a package
that plays just for kids. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
These kids have got stories to | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
tell you about their experiences
on YouTube and YouTube Kids. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
Chardonnay, would
you like to go first? | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
I was on YouTube listening
to a song and an advert | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
came up with scary messages. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
And I was on kids you
Tube, I was watching | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
a video by a YouTuber
who is quite famous. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
In the video he started swearing. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
When I was on YouTube I logged
into a video about slime and | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
a scary image popped
up with blood on it. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
I felt really scared
and I couldn't sleep that day. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:36
I feel YouTube should
check their videos | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
because there are lots of children
of different ages watching. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:43
I think YouTube should
watch it before we | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
watch it so kids like
me don't get scared. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:54
All these guys have been upset
or hurt in some way by what | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
they have seen on YouTube
and gives YouTube. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
So what have you got to say to them? | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
We don't want anyone to
have a tougher bad experience and we | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
work really hard to make sure that
people can see the kind of content | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
that we want. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
So I'm really sorry for all
of you who have had good | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
experiences on YouTube but also bad
or tough experiences. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
Is it not too late for the kids? | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
Surely you have a responsibility
to check these things before | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
any child sees them? | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
We have a responsibility
to make sure that the | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
platform can survive and can thrive,
so that we have a collection of | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
content that comes
from around the world. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
We want people to do that in a safe
and responsible way. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
We also know there is
a diverse amount of | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
content on YouTube,
as there is on the wider Internet, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
and it wouldn't be fair if I sat
here and said to | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
you, we can make a perfectly safe. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
Both things are still going wrong,
kids are still seeing things on | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
YouTube Kids that are inappropriate. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:44
Do you need to work harder? | 0:02:44 | 0:02:45
Do you need to do more? | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
Absolutely we need to do more. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
We need to do more to make
sure that children can | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
experience the Internet in a way
they feel confident, and away they | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
feel safe, and away they feel
they can flag content that isn't | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
correct and they can get
the education and | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
support from us and from the wider
family and friends and school too. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:07
All these kids here have been
quite hurt and upset. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
Some have not been able
to sleep at night over what | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
they have seen on YouTube. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:13
Would you like to take
this opportunity to say | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
sorry to them and other kids
who might have seen things | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
that are disturbing? | 0:03:18 | 0:03:19
I find it very tough to hear
that you have seen and | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
experienced things you didn't want
to and you can't really difficult | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
on there. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
I would really like to make sure
that doesn't happen again, and | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
I'm very, very sorry for any hurt
or discomfort that he found, because | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
that's not nice at any age. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
While we're talking about staying
safe online, we know things | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
you see and hear online can
hurt your feelings or confuse you. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
But that doesn t mean
you need to be scared. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
'Own It' is a new BBC
website which can help. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:47
So head to bbc.com/ownit
for real-life stories, | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
advice from experts,
fun quizzes, and videos | 0:03:50 | 0:03:51
with celebs and vloggers. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:56
Next, 100 years ago today,
a change in the law gave women | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
in the UK the right to vote
in general elections | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
for the very first time. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
They still didn't have the same
voting rights as men, | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
but this date marked an important
step towards getting equality | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
between men and women.
But what does equality mean? | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
We spoke to some amazing women
to see what they had to say. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:22
It means if the boys can do it, you
can do it too. A quality means | 0:04:23 | 0:04:30
listening to everybody and valuing
what they have to say no matter who | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
they are. Everyone is exactly the
same. We are all the same people. We | 0:04:33 | 0:04:40
are all humans. It's important in
society that everyone gets treated | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
with the same opportunities. Life is
all about finding a passion and | 0:04:43 | 0:04:49
living happily. With the quality it
means you can have that chance in a | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
matter who you are. Everybody
deserves it. My favourite | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56
description of equality comes from
an indigenous tribe in Latin | 0:04:56 | 0:05:01
America, where they say our tribe is
like an eagle. An eagle has two | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
wings. One is male, one is female.
Only when the two wings are equal | 0:05:05 | 0:05:10
will our tribe 's like true. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:12
And to see more of these incredible
women, then head online, | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
where we've also got got
all you need to know about women's | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
fight for the right to vote.
Take a look. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
That's it from me. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:21
We're back tomorrow morning. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
Bye! | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26 |
