And the dogs paddling their way to a surfing crown.

They say dogs are man's best friend but on Middle Island in Australia,

dogs and penguins are even closer than that.

Some specially trained Maremma dogs have the job of protecting local

penguins from foxes.

Martin has more.

These guys have a important job to do.

They protect the penguins.

They are called Little Penguins, and are the smallest in the world.

Foxes have been attacking the colony living on the Middle Island

in Australia for years.

The problem became so bad in 2006, there

were only ten penguins left.

Then a local chicken farmer up with an idea

to use his Maremma dogs, that protect his chickens,

to protect the penguins.

The famous story is that penguins are just chooks in dinner

suits, so if we can train them to look after the chooks,

low to the ground, feathered variety, they should transfer over

to the penguins.

These sister dogs started work and over the last ten years,

they've done a fantastic job.

Penguin numbers on the island are now more than 180.

But lately, they've been getting too old for

fox chasing, so now there is a new recruit.

It will take a lot of training to get him up to speed but it should

prove to be worth the effort.

To football now and Leicester are still top of the premier league

after the weekend's action.

Manchester United lost 1-0 to West Brom,

it's their first win over United in the league for 32 years.

Soloman Rondon scored the only goal of the game.

United were down to ten men after Juan Mata was sent off

in the first half.

Manager Louis Van Gaal was not too impressed.

It's a big blow again, because it was not necessary.

You see the game in the first half, then it was not

necessary, I think.

Great Britain ended the Track Cycling World Championships

in London at the top of the medal table.

Laura Trott won her second gold medal of the competition

in the women's omnium.

Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish also picked up

a gold medal in the madison.

Wiggins said it was a nice way to finish the championships.

This was like a bit of a bonus, we hadn't done any madison changes,

it was just something we would get up

and do, a bit of a spectacle at the end, so it was so nice to be

world champion again.

Like Mark said, we can maybe ride the London 6 together as world

champions now, the Ghent 6 maybe.

So that is a bit of a celebration thing at the end of the year to do

all of those.

So it is just brilliant, yeah.

There was success in the tennis too as Great Britain

are through to the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup competition.

Andy Murray rounded off the weekend's matches by beating

Kei Nishikori over five sets.

Team GB will take on Novak Djokovic's Serbian team in July.

It was Andy's first match back since the birth of his daughter,

who he couldn't wait to get back to.

Looking forward to getting back, you know,

it's Kim's first Mother's Day, so.

Yeah, so, nice to hopefully get to see her this

evening, I'll try and get back for bath-time and try and put her,

put her to sleep.

It sounds like an idea from the distant future,

but driverless lorries could be making an appearance on our roads

sooner than you'd think.

The government is expected to agree plans for testing

the new technology later this month, according to newspaper reports.

The vehicles would use cameras and radars to help them avoid other

road users and a human driver would be present too.

A similar scheme has already been tested in Germany.

Stargazers across the country were treated to a dazzling display

of the Northern Lights last night.

Known as the aurora borealis, it was visible in Scotland

and Northern Ireland, but also spotted as far south

as Anglesey in Wales and Oxfordshire in England,

painting the night sky with shades of green,

purple and blue.

Before we got take a look at these talented pooches.

These pets and their owners opened a surfing festival

on Australia's sunshine coast.

Competitors from all over the world have travelled to the event

in Queensland, which is described as surfing's answer

to the Olympic Games.
