Hi, I'm Whitney.

0:00:120:00:13

This is Newsround.

0:00:130:00:15

First to Asia, where

there are growing fears

0:00:150:00:17

of an environmental disaster

in the East China Sea as a huge

0:00:170:00:21

tanker is leaking oil.

0:00:210:00:22

Here's Ayshah.

0:00:220:00:24

Toxic, black smoke fills the skies

as an oil tanker continues to burn

0:00:240:00:31

many hours after it hit a cargo

ship via China.

0:00:310:00:39

The Sanchi vessel caught light

after the collision two days ago off

0:00:390:00:42

the coast of the city of Shanghai.

0:00:420:00:43

The huge tanker is more than 270

metres long and was carrying

0:00:430:00:46

about a million barrels of oil

to South Korea.

0:00:460:00:50

Chinese authorities are now warning

that the tanker is in danger

0:00:500:00:52

of exploding or sinking.

0:00:520:00:56

If the entire cargo ends up

in the ocean, that would effectively

0:00:560:00:59

be in the top ten oil

spills worldwide, ever.

0:00:590:01:03

So it has a huge potential

for environmental damage.

0:01:030:01:07

Major oil spills from tankers

are becoming less common.

0:01:070:01:10

One of the most serious from recent

years was the sinking

0:01:100:01:13

of the Prestige off the coast

of Spain in 2002.

0:01:130:01:18

More than 60,000 tonnes of oil

0:01:180:01:20

came ashore over a long

stretch of coastline.

0:01:200:01:25

Specialist clean-up vessels have

been sent to the scene

0:01:250:01:27

of the tanker fire.

0:01:270:01:29

There were 32 crew on board.

0:01:290:01:31

One of them has died.

0:01:310:01:33

The rest are missing.

0:01:330:01:35

Rescuers trying to reach the site

are being pushed back by a large oil

0:01:350:01:39

slick and thick clouds of smoke,

but are continuing their efforts.

0:01:390:01:48

Tonight's FA Cup game

between Brighton and Crystal Palace

0:01:480:01:50

will be the first time

Video Assistant Referee technology

0:01:500:01:54

is used in a competitive

club match in England.

0:01:540:01:57

It's called VAR

for short - and basically means

0:01:570:02:03

a referee will be able to watch back

tackles and goals on a screen

0:02:030:02:06

by the side of the pitch if he's not

quite sure what happened.

0:02:060:02:09

The International Football

Association has agreed to a trial

0:02:090:02:13

of the technology.

0:02:130:02:18

Thank you, that's a yellow card.

0:02:180:02:21

We'll be watching

to see how it goes.

0:02:210:02:23

Next, how clean is the

air we're breathing?

0:02:230:02:25

Research by the World Health

Organisation says air quality

0:02:250:02:27

in more than 44 UK cities

isn't good enough.

0:02:270:02:29

And one girl wants to

try and change that.

0:02:290:02:31

I've been to meet her.

0:02:310:02:32

Air pollution isn't

always easy to see.

0:02:320:02:35

It's caused by burning fossil fuels,

things like coal and oil

0:02:350:02:39

that we use to make heat,

electricity and to fuel

0:02:390:02:42

cars and lorries.

0:02:420:02:45

Hadeel goes to school in a part

of London with one of the highest

0:02:450:02:48

levels of air pollution

in the country.

0:02:480:02:52

This road is really busy

with trucks, vans, cars,

0:02:520:02:54

buses, you name it.

0:02:540:02:59

Using this special camera,

we can see some of the harmful

0:02:590:03:02

gases in the air.

0:03:020:03:05

Look as it drives off and look

at the cars next to it as well.

0:03:050:03:08

When you put it in normal mode...

0:03:080:03:10

Nothing.

0:03:100:03:11

You can't see anything.

0:03:110:03:12

But what are we actually looking at?

0:03:120:03:15

This lab measures quality of air

from all over the UK.

0:03:150:03:19

I can see here that you've got

pollution coming out

0:03:190:03:21

of the exhausts of vehicles.

0:03:210:03:23

That is mainly going to be nitrogen

dioxide and very small particles,

0:03:230:03:26

both of which can be

damaging to health.

0:03:260:03:28

It's not a worry for most

of us who are healthy,

0:03:280:03:31

but if you have an existing problem

with your breathing,

0:03:310:03:35

like many old people do,

or if you have asthma,

0:03:350:03:38

both of those things can be

affected by air pollution.

0:03:380:03:40

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan,

says the problem is unacceptable,

0:03:400:03:43

and has promised to help get

pollution levels down

0:03:430:03:45

to the World Health Organisation

standards by 2030.

0:03:450:03:51

But Hadeel wants more

done more quickly.

0:03:510:03:54

I am writing this letter

to the London Mayor, Sadiq Khan,

0:03:540:03:57

to tell him how unhappy I am

about the air pollution in London.

0:03:570:04:01

I wrote two proposals.

0:04:010:04:03

The first one is to see more

electric cars on the road.

0:04:030:04:06

The second one is to get factories

to stop using harmful chemicals.

0:04:060:04:11

She is sending it to City Hall,

where the Mayor of London works.

0:04:110:04:14

Newsround contacted Sadiq Khan

about Hadeel's concerns,

0:04:140:04:18

and his office told us

that the Mayor is doing

0:04:180:04:20

everything in his power

0:04:200:04:22

to tackle London's toxic air,

creating 12 low emission bus zones,

0:04:220:04:27

phasing out diesel taxis,

checking the quality of air around

0:04:270:04:29

schools and alerting people when air

quality falls below

0:04:290:04:34

a certain standard.

0:04:340:04:36

The Government has promised to give

£3.5 million to help

0:04:360:04:39

improve air quality.

0:04:390:04:44

That's it from us.

0:04:440:04:45

Ricky's here in the morning.

0:04:450:04:50

Make sure you head online for the

rest of the day's stories. And why

0:04:500:04:55

not try out our quiz of the week?

See you tomorrow.
