Hey, Whitney here. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
It's Wednesday and
this is Newsround. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:15
Your top stories today... | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
First, to a refugee swimmer whose
story is so amazing, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
it's now being made in to a film. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
I've been finding out
all about Yusra Mardini. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:30
Yusra competed as a swimmer
at the Rio Olympics last year. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
But less than a year before that,
she was forced to leave her home | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
in Syria because of the war. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:42
When they were telling me that I'm
leaving to the Olympics, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
I was also really surprised. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:49
After only one year, I'm a refugee
in Germany and I'm going. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
And there was a
Refugee Olympic Team. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
It was incredible. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
She had a great time
and took part as a member | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
of the first ever Team Refugee. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
But Yusra's life hasn't
always been this much fun. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
It took her 25 days to travel
from Syria to Europe. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
Part of that journey was in a boat. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:11
When it began to sink,
she got into the sea, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
along with her sister,
and helped save 19 | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
others who were onboard. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:21
The hero was pulling
a rope, you know. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
It's OK, I helped the boat. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
It was not only me,
or only my sister. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
But you can imagine that they told
you it's 45-minutes trip, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
and you stayed three hours
and a half. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
She now lives in Germany
and is training for the next | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
Olympics, which will be
in Tokyo, in 2020. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
My ambition is just
to be an athlete. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
If I'm going to start
for Germany, or for my country, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
or for the Refugee Olympic Team,
I'm going to do the best I can | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
and it will be my pleasure. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
Now a film's being made
telling her incredible story. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
Let's hope she gets some time
at the pool to watch it! | 0:01:53 | 0:02:01
Let's hope she gets some time out
of the pool to watch it! | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
Next, if you happen to be
in Japan over the weekend, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
you may get to see a couple
of shooting stars - | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
but they're stars with a difference. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
A company is making their own
by releasing metal particles | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
from a tiny satelite,
which will then burn up as they | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
enter the Earth's atmosphere. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
If everything goes to plan,
the organisers of the 2020 | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games
will feature the man-made shooting | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
stars at the opening ceremony. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:29
Cool! | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33 | |
So, I want to know -
how many of you love using an emoji? | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
My personal fave is the heart one. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
But have you ever wondered
who decides which ones you get | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
to have on your phone or tablet? | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
Well, we went to meet one woman
who's got that very job. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:53
My name is Jennifer 8.
Lee. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:54 | |
I'm part of a group that helps
to decide the world's emojis. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
What are the things in our
world that are important | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
enough to be an emoji? | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
So, are dinosaurs important
enough to be emojis? | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
What kind of dinosaurs? | 0:03:03 | 0:03:09
Certain emoji, like mosquito emoji,
is really important, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
because it allows you to communicate
the ideas of danger | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
without having to know
every single language - | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
because everyone
recognises mosquitoes. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
Some people think that people use
emoji because they're really lazy. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
But if you think about it,
the reason people love emojis | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
so much is that it's a really fast,
simple way to communicate ideas, | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
and it allows people who don't
speak the same language | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
to communicate using emoji. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:32
Sometimes, emoji are really clear. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
But sometimes, it can
be really confusing | 0:03:34 | 0:03:35
what the other person means. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
And some people don't like that. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
And other people think that's
what make emoji fun. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
In different cultures, people can
give the emoji their own meaning. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
In Japanese, this is
how you say thank you. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:52
But in America - and,
sometimes, the West - | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
this looks like people praying. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
And some people actually think it
looks like a high-five. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
So, you can actually have very
different interpretations | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
of the different emojis. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:08
What a cool job! | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
So, this was Andy Murray's first
match since the Wimbledon | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
quarter-finals which he lost,
but there was plenty | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
of fun to be had. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:15
That's Murray, in the ginger wig,
at a charity event in Glasgow. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
Federer joined in, and played -
and won - in a kilt. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:22
It's also been announced that Andy's
wife, Kim, has given birth | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
to the couple's second daughter. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:26
No news on the name yet! | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
Congratulations. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
