Good afternoon, it's
Whitney here with your | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
Saturday morning Newsround. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:21
Now, if you're heading out today,
make sure you wrap up | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
warm because winter | 0:00:24 | 0:00:25
has definitley arrived. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
Snow has been falling | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
in parts of Scotland,
Northern Ireland, Wales, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
and Northern England,
and temperatures could | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
drop to as low as -6. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
And the weather is due to get
even worse on Sunday. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
Looks like it's time
to get your sledges out, guys. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
Next up, US President Donald Trump
has declared a state of emergency | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
in Southern California
because the wildfires | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
are spreading fast. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
Firefighters are still
having to battle | 0:00:44 | 0:00:53
the blazes and more
than 200,000 people have had | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
to leave their homes. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
Thousands of buildings
have also been damaged. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
Next, if you're from a country
in the European Union | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
but you are living in the UK,
or if you are British and living | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
in a country in the European Union,
we've got some big news for you. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
Here's what you need to know. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:08
So, the UK is leaving a club of 28
countries called the European Union. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
A lot of people have
called this Brexit. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
When British people voted to leave
last year, it wasn't clear | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
what would happen to the 3 million
people from the EU who | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
live here in Britain. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:24
And also, what would
happen to British people | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
living in EU countries. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:31
And that got some people worried. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
But now the British government
and the European Union have agreed | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
that everyone will be allowed
to carry on living and working | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
where they are now. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:46
The two sides say they have also
come to an agreement about | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
the border between Northern Ireland
and the Republic of Ireland. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
This issue has caused big problems,
and the details still | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
need to be worked out. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
And finally, it has also been agreed
that when the UK leaves, | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
it will pay money to the EU. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
Although it is not yet known
how much that will be, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
it is likely to cost tens
of billions of pounds. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:11
So that is Brexit all sorted, then? | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
Well, not quite. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
Even though the two sides have
agreed on these three big issues, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
there are still loads of things
we will need to sort out before | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
the UK leaves the EU in 2019. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:27
Next to a guest who
is out of this world. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
Astronaut Tim Peake came
into the studio yesterday to answer | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
some of your questions. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
Take a look. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
This is no longer Newsround HQ. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
Just for a moment,
this is Mission Control | 0:02:39 | 0:02:40
and that's because we have a very
special guest who is about to join | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
all of us here. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:49
Are you guys ready? | 0:02:49 | 0:02:50
Yes! | 0:02:50 | 0:02:51 | |
I think they're ready. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:52
It is the one, the only,
it's Tim Peake. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
Hi, guys. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
Hiya. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:58 | |
That is wonderful, Tim. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
Ayshah, lovely to meet you. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:01
Welcome to Newsround. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
Thank you very much. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:04
Take a seat right here for us. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
Thank you. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:06
Tim, thank you so much
for joining us at | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
Newsround HQ. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:10
Let's go straight in to the first
question right here. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
What do you miss most about space? | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
Two things, really. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:15
I think the first thing I miss
is weightlessness, you know, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
floating around in space
and the second thing | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
is the view of Planet Earth. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
And I know we have a
great question here | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
as well. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:24
What's your question? | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
If you were to name
a new planet, what | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
would you name it? | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28
I'd have to see it first. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
I think you've got to see
something to be able to come | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
up with a name. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:33
But, yeah, I mean, there's loads
of new planets out there | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
and there's loads
of potential for it. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
What about you? | 0:03:38 | 0:03:39
What's your question? | 0:03:39 | 0:03:40
So, what differences
in, like, experiences | 0:03:40 | 0:03:47
So, what differences in,
like, experience is | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
there from Earth's
atmosphere to zero gravity? | 0:03:49 | 0:03:50
Wow. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:51 | |
I mean, coming back
into Earth's atmosphere is | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
incredible. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:54
You get the re-entry,
you get the heat, the deceleration. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
Up in space it's really liberating. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:58
You're just floating around
and seeing the stars | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
at night and the Earth
by day, it's beautiful. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
I'm going to squeeze one more in. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
What's your question? | 0:04:04 | 0:04:05
Who or what was your
inspiration to become an | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
amazing astronaut? | 0:04:07 | 0:04:08
Well, I've had a lot
of inspirational characters | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
throughout my life and the first
thing I wanted to do was become a | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
pilot, test pilot. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:14
So people like Chuck
Yeager and reading books | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
like The Right Stuff for me
was very inspirational. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
Now to a lovely tale of a police
officer who rescued a dog | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
after Hurricane Irma. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:24
He's now brought him back to the UK
from the British Virgin Islands. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:30
Meet Buddy, the lucky labrador cross
who is now living in the UK. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
Sit. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35 | |
Good boy. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
Buddy is a stray. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
He won the heart of a police
officer called John Harvey. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
John was sent from Suffolk Police
to the British Virgin Islands. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
He was sent there to help people
after the devastation | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
of Hurricane Irma. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:48
He put his paws around my thigh
and just wouldn't let me go, really. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
So I was trying to leave,
and he was walking | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
with me on his back legs. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:55
And I just thought I'd
like to bring him home, if I can, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
and give him a chance
of a better life, really. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
Buddy spent 21 days in Washington DC
in the US, where vets checked | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
that he was healthy and fit,
before he was allowed | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
to travel on to the UK. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:12
It was fantastic, really,
really good to see him. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
He was excited, I was excited. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:15
And it was kind of the start
of the next chapter. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
The pair are now happily
settling in, ready for | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
new adventures together. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
But it can all get a bit exhausting. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:24
BUDDY SNORES. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:30
Finally, the Harlem Globetrotters
are known for their incredible | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
basketball skills and to celebrate
World Trickshot Day, | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
one of the players leaned
from the window of a bus parked | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
on the roof of an art museum
in St Louis and shot a basketball | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
through a hoop on the street below. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
And here's the shot. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
Amazeballs, but of course, guys,
do not try this at home. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
Let's leave it to the professionals. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51
That's all from me, we'll be back
just after 1 o'clock. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
Bye! | 0:05:53 | 0:05:58 |
