Morning - I'm Ricky,

and this is Newsround.

0:00:120:00:14

First to the US, where flash floods

and mudslides have caused loads

0:00:140:00:19

of damage in southern California.

0:00:190:00:21

Rescue teams are trying to help

people after heavy rains

0:00:210:00:23

turned roads into rivers.

0:00:230:00:25

Witnesses have described large

rocks, the size of small cars,

0:00:250:00:28

rolling down hills, blocking roads

and destroying houses.

0:00:280:00:33

Police say more than 100 people have

been taken to hospital.

0:00:330:00:36

At least 13 people have died.

0:00:360:00:39

Gay people can get married

everywhere in the UK apart

0:00:390:00:43

from in Northern Ireland.

0:00:430:00:44

Two women or two men have been able

to marry in England,

0:00:440:00:47

Scotland and Wales since 2014.

0:00:470:00:49

Martin's been speaking

to Northern Ireland, to find out

0:00:490:00:53

what people there think.

0:00:530:00:55

We're all just people

and we should have equal rights,

0:00:550:00:57

no matter who we are.

0:00:570:00:59

These kids set up this group

so there would be somewhere

0:00:590:01:02

for people who are gay and straight

to chat about things

0:01:020:01:04

that affect them.

0:01:040:01:06

And one big issue that comes up

again and again is gay marriage,

0:01:060:01:09

which isn't allowed in Northern

Ireland.

0:01:090:01:12

I think it's old-fashioned and a bit

slow of the people making the laws.

0:01:120:01:21

It's unfair, because when I'm older

and I do truly love someone

0:01:210:01:26

and want to get married, it just

means that I can't really do that.

0:01:260:01:29

If I could sit in front of people

that have the decision to change

0:01:290:01:33

this, I would tell them,

"What are you doing?"

0:01:330:01:35

Right now I shouldn't even be

here discussing why gay

0:01:350:01:37

marriage isn't a thing,

because it should

0:01:370:01:39

already be a thing here.

0:01:390:01:40

There's like a lot of people

in our area who don't actually know

0:01:400:01:43

that gay marriage still isn't legal

in Northern Ireland.

0:01:430:01:47

Eventually it will change.

0:01:470:01:48

I think we're just putting it off.

0:01:480:01:51

But obviously it's going to happen.

0:01:510:01:54

'S

0:01:540:01:54

For Alice, there is another reason

why it's important to her that gay

0:01:540:01:59

people should be able to marry.

0:01:590:02:01

Her uncle is gay and lives

in the Republic of Ireland,

0:02:010:02:04

where gay marriage is allowed,

after moving from Northern Ireland.

0:02:040:02:08

How was it knowing that you couldn't

get married even if you wanted

0:02:080:02:11

to in Northern Ireland?

0:02:110:02:12

What it does do is it

tells you that you're not

0:02:120:02:15

the same as everybody else -

you're not allowed the same

0:02:150:02:17

freedoms as everybody else.

0:02:170:02:18

And a lot of other people

in Northern Ireland want

0:02:180:02:22

the laws to change.

0:02:220:02:23

In a recent poll, over two thirds

of people here said they think gay

0:02:230:02:26

marriage should be allowed.

0:02:260:02:30

The biggest political party

here is called the DUP.

0:02:300:02:36

And I'm just outside

their headquarters in Belfast.

0:02:360:02:38

The DUP don't believe in gay

marriage, and that's a big reason

0:02:380:02:41

why it hasn't happened

in Northern Ireland -

0:02:410:02:44

unlike England, Wales and Scotland.

0:02:440:02:48

Now we wanted to speak

to someone from the DUP,

0:02:480:02:51

but no one wanted to be interviewed.

0:02:510:02:54

But someone who would

speak to us was John.

0:02:540:02:56

He is a Christian.

0:02:560:02:58

He thinks that gay marriage is

against what his religion teaches.

0:02:580:03:02

In the Bible I believe that marriage

is something that we didn't create -

0:03:020:03:05

it's something that was given to us

as a gift by God.

0:03:050:03:08

I think God suggests that

marriage is something

0:03:080:03:12

between a man and a woman.

0:03:120:03:14

I think it's important that

all people are treated well,

0:03:140:03:17

all people are treated with dignity,

all people are respected,

0:03:170:03:21

no matter their creed,

colour or sexual orientation.

0:03:210:03:24

And I think that is fair.

0:03:240:03:28

John - who we just heard from -

is from a big Christian group that

0:03:280:03:32

wants the ban on gay marriage

to continue in Northern Ireland.

0:03:320:03:37

Next to football, and Manchester

City came from behind

0:03:370:03:39

to beat Bristol City

in their League Cup

0:03:390:03:41

semi-final first leg match.

0:03:410:03:44

The Championship side took the lead

from the penalty spot

0:03:440:03:46

through Bobby Reid

at the Etihad Stadium.

0:03:460:03:48

Kevin de Bruyne then

equalised for the unbeaten

0:03:480:03:52

Premier League leaders,

followed by substitute

0:03:520:03:53

Aguero's late winner.

0:03:530:03:55

It means Manchester City take a 2-1

lead into their second match.

0:03:550:04:02

They're hard to see, but you can

probably find them in your

0:04:020:04:05

bathroom at home -

I'm talking about microbeads.

0:04:050:04:07

The UK has just banned them -

but what exactly are they?

0:04:070:04:10

Here's Ayshah.

0:04:100:04:11

Microbeads are a tiny

balls of plastic smaller

0:04:110:04:15

than five millimetres -

roughly the size of a grain of sand.

0:04:150:04:20

They're used in some shower gels,

face washes and toothpaste to help

0:04:200:04:23

add that extra scrub.

0:04:230:04:26

But now the UK has banned making

products containing them.

0:04:260:04:28

Why?

0:04:280:04:29

They say trillions of microbeads end

up in the world's oceans,

0:04:290:04:32

lakes and rivers, and that harms

the sea life who eat them

0:04:320:04:35

or breathe them in by mistake.

0:04:350:04:39

Just one shower can lead

to 100,000 plastic particles

0:04:390:04:42

going into the ocean.

0:04:420:04:45

Many companies have already

taken steps to remove

0:04:450:04:47

microbeads from their stuff.

0:04:470:04:49

And although making things with them

has now been banned,

0:04:490:04:53

microbeads won't be removed

from shops completely

0:04:530:04:54

until later this year.

0:04:540:04:57

Environmental campaigners hope

a worldwide ban will soon follow.

0:04:570:05:04

Now for something you

don't see every day.

0:05:040:05:07

This is the Sahara desert -

but not as you may know it.

0:05:070:05:10

Instead it's covered in snow.

0:05:100:05:11

It's only the third time in 40 years

that they've seen snowfall.

0:05:110:05:14

It didn't last long though -

it all melted away soon after these

0:05:140:05:17

pictures were taken.

0:05:170:05:19

Police patrolling the streets

in the US state of Florida

0:05:190:05:22

caught something pretty

unusual on camera.

0:05:220:05:24

Yep, a skateboarding dog.

0:05:240:05:27

He's doing nothing wrong,

but the police were clearly

0:05:270:05:29

impressed with his skills.

0:05:290:05:30

They filmed the pooch,

and then posted the video online.

0:05:300:05:32

He's got some serious skills.

0:05:320:05:37

Just enough time left to tell

you to head to Newsround online,

0:05:370:05:40

where you can see the amazing

wildlife photos which are part

0:05:400:05:43

of a national competition.

0:05:430:05:44

Plus, the London Underground

is 155 years old.

0:05:440:05:46

Take a look at the very first

tunnels created for the trains

0:05:460:05:49

underneath England's capital city.

0:05:490:05:53

That's it from us.

Have a great day at school.

0:05:530:05:54

Hayley's back with more Newsround

stories this afternoon.
