Hi, I'm Whitney. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
And this is Newsround. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
This time last year
Billy Monger was being tipped | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
as the next Lewis Hamilton. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
He was 17 and a star
of Formula four racing - | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
but he had an accident in his car
last April and lost | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
both his lower legs. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
But Billy is making a comeback. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:34
There was a slight moment when I
thought I would not drive again. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
It doesn't change the dream. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
The dream stays the same. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
I want to be an F1 driver. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:49
My mum is very nervous. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
If I don't do it,
what else am I going to | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
do with my life? | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
I need to make my life
into something positive. | 0:00:54 | 0:01:02
Billy is a very
special lad, for sure. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
Regardless of his injuries,
the level of control | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
he's got now, for prosthetic
legs, is phenomenal. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
When you control the pedal normally
you do it all through | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
the ankle, but with me,
because I haven't got ankles, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:18
the way I simply control
it is through my leg like this. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
I do a push motion instead
to control the car. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:27
Now, gay people can get married
everywhere in the UK apart | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
from in Northern Ireland. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
Two women or two men have been able
to marry in England, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
Scotland and Wales since 2014 -
Martin's been speaking to people | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
in Northern Ireland to find
out what they think. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:41
We're all just people
and we should have equal rights, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
no matter who we are. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
These kids set up this group
so there would be somewhere | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
for people who are gay and straight
to chat about things | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
that affect them. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:51
And one big issue that comes up
again and again is gay marriage, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
which isn't allowed in Northern
Ireland. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
I think it's old-fashioned and a bit
slow of the people making the laws. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:05
It's unfair, because when I'm older
and I do truly love someone | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
and want to get married, it just
means that I can't really do that. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:14
If I could sit in front of people
that have the decision to change | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
this, I would tell them,
"What are you doing?" | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
Right now I shouldn't even be
here discussing why gay | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
marriage isn't a thing,
because it should | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
already be a thing here. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
There's like a lot of people
in our area who don't actually know | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
that gay marriage still isn't legal
in Northern Ireland. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:32
Eventually it will change. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
I think we're just putting it off. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
But obviously it's going to happen. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
For Alice, there is another reason
why it's important to her that gay | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
people should be able to marry. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
Her uncle is gay and lives
in the Republic of Ireland, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
where gay marriage is allowed,
after moving from Northern Ireland. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
How was it knowing that you couldn't
get married even if you wanted | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
to in Northern Ireland? | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
What it does do is it
tells you that you're not | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
the same as everybody else -
you're not allowed the same | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
freedoms as everybody else. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
And a lot of other people
in Northern Ireland want | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
the laws to change. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
In a recent poll, over two thirds
of people here said they think gay | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
marriage should be allowed. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
The biggest political party
here is called the DUP. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
And I'm just outside
their headquarters in Belfast. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
The DUP don't believe in gay
marriage, and that's a big reason | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
why it hasn't happened
in Northern Ireland - | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
unlike England, Wales and Scotland. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:34
Now we wanted to speak
to someone from the DUP, | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
but no one wanted to be interviewed. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
But someone who would
speak to us was John. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
He is a Christian. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:43
He thinks that gay marriage is
against what his religion teaches. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:51
In the Bible I believe that marriage
is something that we didn't create - | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
it's something that was given to us
as a gift by God. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
I think God suggests that
marriage is something | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
between a man and a woman. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:00
I think it's important that
all people are treated well, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
all people are treated with dignity,
all people are respected, | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
no matter their creed,
colour or sexual orientation. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:09
And I think that is fair. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:16
And finally, check out
these frozen cars. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
They're covered in ice
because of ridiculously low | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
temperatures in Eastern Germany. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
Drivers spent hours
trying to defrost them. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
Icy winds are battering
the mountainous area | 0:04:27 | 0:04:28
of Saxony with everything
there covered in snow. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
And if you're a bit bored
tonight and fancy heading | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
to Newsround online -
we have just the thing to make | 0:04:34 | 0:04:38
you laugh... | 0:04:38 | 0:04:39
A skateboarding dog!!! | 0:04:39 | 0:04:40
I'm not even joking! | 0:04:40 | 0:04:41
Plus take a look at the amazing
animal photos which are part | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
of a national competition. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:45
That's it from me. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:46
Enjoy the rest of your day. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
Ricky's back with loads more great
stories in the morning. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
See ya! | 0:04:50 | 0:04:56 |
