Ayshah here with Newsround this Sunday afternoon.

0:00:030:00:07

This is what's coming your way: The start of a year-long party

0:00:070:00:10

for cub scouts AND the furry little fella having fun in the snow.

0:00:100:00:15

Many of us woke up to snow today as it fell over large parts

0:00:280:00:31

of the UK.

0:00:310:00:32

South-East England saw some of their first snow flurries,

0:00:320:00:32

as well as Western Scotland, North-West England and the Midlands.

0:00:340:00:37

You've been sending in your snowy snaps.

0:00:370:00:40

Kate and Tom have sent this picture of a snowman they've made

0:00:400:00:43

together.

0:00:430:00:44

And this is the view on Lucy and Isobel's street.

0:00:440:00:47

Here's a snow bear which Violeta has made.

0:00:470:00:49

And Milly who's seven

0:00:490:00:52

and from Luton sent us this pic of her snow ladies.

0:00:520:00:56

And check out Dorothy the snow lady.

0:00:560:01:00

Made by Charlie and katie from Milton Keynes.

0:01:000:01:03

A lot of you will be having fun in the snow,

0:01:040:01:07

and this squirrel in Estonia,

0:01:070:01:08

Eastern Europe, is certainly enjoying this winter wonderland.

0:01:080:01:11

Temperatures in the area reach around -12 this month.

0:01:110:01:16

And this fella seemed to be diving in to find his favourite

0:01:160:01:19

food - nuts!

0:01:190:01:22

More than 20 new marine conservation zones are being set up

0:01:220:01:25

around the UK coastline.

0:01:250:01:27

They're designed to help protect the habitats

0:01:270:01:29

and wildlife living there.

0:01:290:01:30

Conservation and wildlife organisations are pleased but they,

0:01:300:01:32

along with fishermen's groups, are also concerned about how it

0:01:320:01:35

will be managed.

0:01:350:01:38

We've been damaging our seas for centuries now, overfishing

0:01:410:01:43

and polluting and using the protected area networks is one

0:01:430:01:47

way to start to look after it and give our species

0:01:470:01:50

and our habitats the space and time to start to recover and hopefully

0:01:500:01:55

they can then start to thrive again.

0:01:550:01:59

What's in the middle of our planet?

0:02:000:02:01

That's what a team of scientists are trying to find out

0:02:010:02:04

in an amazing experiment.

0:02:040:02:06

Here's Leah.

0:02:060:02:07

This is a drilling ship called the JOIDES Resolution,

0:02:100:02:12

heading to the middle of the Indian Ocean.

0:02:120:02:14

The team on board are preparing to drill miles beneath

0:02:140:02:18

the ocean floor.

0:02:180:02:20

They've chosen here because Earth's crust is thinner than other places,

0:02:200:02:23

so it is easier to break through.

0:02:230:02:26

It is a huge challenge, something no one has managed before.

0:02:260:02:30

Our Earth is made up of layers, a bit like an onion.

0:02:300:02:33

The scientists plan to sample the super hot rock from here,

0:02:330:02:37

the planet's mantle.

0:02:370:02:40

They'll use this to learn more about how the Earth was formed

0:02:400:02:43

by studying the rocks buried there.

0:02:430:02:47

They also wanted to try and find out if there's anything living

0:02:470:02:50

there that could survive such extreme heat and pressure.

0:02:500:03:00

The drill needs to travel 700 metres down through the seam and 5.5

0:03:020:03:05

kilometres into the rock before it reaches the mantle,

0:03:050:03:07

that's the length of about 50 football pitches!

0:03:070:03:09

Even with the latest technology, it will take several years.

0:03:090:03:12

It will take a long time, longer than we have on this

0:03:120:03:14

expedition here to drill deeper and deeper until we finally reach

0:03:140:03:17

this objective, then that's a very important finding and a very big

0:03:170:03:20

implication for what we believe is going on deep in the subsurface

0:03:200:03:23

of the planet.

0:03:230:03:24

It's the start of a year-long party for anyone who's a Cub Scout

0:03:240:03:27

and that's because it's the 100th anniversary

0:03:270:03:29

of the organisation.

0:03:290:03:32

Celebrations will be happening throughout the year,

0:03:320:03:34

and to kick things off, cubs from all over the UK went

0:03:340:03:37

for a sleepover at London Zoo.

0:03:370:03:39

So what do these guys like about being Cubs?

0:03:390:03:43

I thought I should join the Cubs because my brother was in it

0:03:450:03:48

and he told me it was much more fun.

0:03:480:03:51

Every week there were different adventures and you're not doing

0:03:510:03:54

the same boring thing over and over again.

0:03:540:03:57

You get this really excited feeling like you've done something really

0:03:570:04:00

well when you get your badge.

0:04:000:04:01

All I want to do is get more badges than my brothers.

0:04:010:04:05

It's that time of the week again when we bring you the most weird

0:04:070:04:10

and wonderful stories.

0:04:100:04:11

Yes, it's Strange, Stranger, Strangest!

0:04:110:04:14

Take a look at this incredible footage of a soap bubble freezing

0:04:140:04:19

in -15 degrees.

0:04:190:04:23

The artist who made the video wanted to show his daughter just how cold

0:04:230:04:26

it was outside.

0:04:260:04:30

Ice crystals in the water to begin to form, just like 2-D snowflakes

0:04:300:04:33

in a snow globe.

0:04:330:04:35

Staying with that freezing feeling, have a look at this car in New York.

0:04:390:04:43

Just a few weeks ago, the city was enjoying its warmest

0:04:430:04:46

Christmas on record, but now people living

0:04:460:04:47

there are facing layers of ice and snow.

0:04:470:04:50

The car, in Buffalo, was turned into a giant icicle

0:04:500:04:53

as temperatures plummeted.

0:04:530:05:00

And this has to be the strangest moment of the week.

0:05:000:05:03

Astronaut Tim Peake showing us just how you drink water in space.

0:05:030:05:14

And hopefully you can see there how water behaves,

0:05:140:05:16

which also means it's easier to drink.

0:05:160:05:22

Nice one, Tim!

0:05:220:05:24

Just incredible.

0:05:240:05:28

Last up, a new panda star has made its first appearance

0:05:290:05:31

to his adoring public at the National Zoo in Washington

0:05:310:05:35

in America.

0:05:350:05:36

Bei Bei is five months old and until now has

0:05:360:05:38

only be seen by video link.

0:05:380:05:40

But big crowds gathered to see him making his debut,

0:05:400:05:43

and you can't blame them, he's super-cute!

0:05:430:05:47

That's all from me and the team, Newsround's back tomorrow

0:05:480:05:51

morning with Ricky.
