Good morning, Ricky here with your

first Newsround update of the day.

0:00:120:00:16

And many of you will be

opening your curtains to see

0:00:160:00:19

snow this morning after

wintry weather overnight.

0:00:190:00:22

Many schools in Scotland,

Northern Ireland and some parts

0:00:220:00:25

of Northern England may

be closed today.

0:00:250:00:28

The snow and ice are causing

serious problems on roads.

0:00:280:00:32

Public transport will

also be affected.

0:00:320:00:35

You can visit Newsround

online to keep up to date

0:00:350:00:38

with today's top stories,

including more on that snowfall.

0:00:380:00:41

If you've woken up to a Winter

Wonderland we'd love to hear

0:00:410:00:44

from you and see your snowy snaps.

0:00:440:00:47

Head online and

join in the conversation.

0:00:470:00:51

Next, want to see a bit

of sporting history?

0:00:510:00:53

Then take a look at this...

0:00:530:01:01

That's not just any goal -

it's the first goal ever to be

0:01:010:01:04

awarded by the video

assistant referee.

0:01:040:01:07

It was called in the FA Cup game

between Leicester City

0:01:070:01:09

and Fleetwood Town last night.

0:01:090:01:12

In the new technology,

an assistant ref can watch the game

0:01:120:01:14

on a screen and speak to the referee

on the pitch through a headset

0:01:140:01:18

to give advice about decisions.

0:01:180:01:21

Leicester's goal was allowed,

meaning they knocked Fleetwood out

0:01:210:01:23

of the competition 2-0.

0:01:230:01:28

Now, kids across Japan

are getting to choose a very,

0:01:280:01:30

very important part

0:01:300:01:32

of the next Olympic Games that

will be hosted in their country.

0:01:320:01:36

Martin's been finding

exactly what...

0:01:360:01:39

What do most big sporting

events have in common?

0:01:390:01:42

Amazing athletes, superb sports?

0:01:420:01:45

Well, yes.

0:01:450:01:47

But also mascots, of course.

0:01:470:01:50

Every primary school class in Japan

is voting for the mascots they want

0:01:500:01:54

for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic

games, which is to be held

0:01:540:01:58

in their home country.

0:01:580:02:00

So who is in the running?

0:02:000:02:02

Could these be the next Olympic

and Paralympic mascots,

0:02:020:02:05

representing tradition

and the cutting-edge tech that

0:02:050:02:08

Japan is famous for?

0:02:080:02:11

Or perhaps this Olympic hopeful,

based on a cat in a box,

0:02:110:02:16

partnered up with this Paralympic

hopeful based on a dog?

0:02:160:02:20

And last but not least,

this fox and raccoon, red and white,

0:02:200:02:25

just like the Japanese flag.

0:02:250:02:27

TRANSLATION: I like

the character's energetic pose

0:02:270:02:29

with its clenched fist.

0:02:290:02:32

I like the smiling

face of the character,

0:02:320:02:34

which I think is cute.

0:02:340:02:36

His chubby cheeks are so cute.

0:02:360:02:38

Schools across Japan have

got until mid-February

0:02:380:02:40

to cast their votes.

0:02:400:02:42

The Olympics and the Paralympics

are amongst the biggest

0:02:420:02:45

sporting event in the world,

so choose carefully, guys!

0:02:450:02:51

Take a look at this

incredible dinosaur tail.

0:02:510:02:56

Well, it's looking for a new home.

0:02:560:02:57

The 17-metre long fossil belonged

to an Atlasaurus some

0:02:570:03:00

165 million years ago.

0:03:000:03:05

It's being auctioned in Mexico,

and it's hoped it will fetch

0:03:050:03:07

thousands of pounds.

0:03:070:03:09

Some of the money raised will be

spent on rebuilding schools

0:03:090:03:11

in Mexico that were damaged by two

earthquakes that stuck

0:03:110:03:14

the area last year.

0:03:140:03:16

Next, to the Philippines,

a country in south-east Asia.

0:03:160:03:19

A huge volcano there is erupting -

but it's not a usual eruption.

0:03:190:03:23

Whitney's been finding out more.

0:03:230:03:29

This is the most active

volcano in the Philippines.

0:03:290:03:37

Scientists say what is happening at

the moment is called quiet eruption.

0:03:370:03:41

There is no big explosion, instead

the lover is flowing out slowly and

0:03:410:03:46

quietly. It is still dangerous, but

people do not always realise it

0:03:460:03:52

because it is not as dramatic. So

even though 15,000 people living

0:03:520:03:56

nearby have left their homes, lots

of other people still have not. The

0:03:560:04:00

volcano erupted 50 times in the last

500 years, and lies in what is known

0:04:000:04:06

as the ring of fire. That is an area

around the Pacific Ocean where

0:04:060:04:12

earthquakes and volcanic eruptions

are common. But now the authorities

0:04:120:04:16

believe things are about to get

worse. It is expected to change from

0:04:160:04:21

a quiet eruption to an explosive

one. If that happens, no one will be

0:04:210:04:25

allowed to stay in the area until

the danger has passed.

0:04:250:04:29

You've probably heard

of twins or triplets -

0:04:290:04:32

but how about sextuplets?

0:04:320:04:33

Well, check out these six

rare white tiger cubs -

0:04:330:04:36

all brothers and sisters.

0:04:360:04:38

This was the first time the public

got a glimpse of them

0:04:380:04:41

a wildlife park in China.

0:04:410:04:44

Looks like their mum

will have her work cut out.

0:04:440:04:49

That's all we've got time for now.

0:04:490:04:51

Newsround's back in 40 minutes.

0:04:510:04:54

Enjoy your breakfast.
