Good afternoon, I'm Hayley with Newsround. | :00:11. | :00:12.
Today we're talking about Jo Cox, who was an MP - | :00:13. | :00:15.
She was voted in by the people in her local area to work on issues | :00:16. | :00:21.
Yesterday, sadly, she was killed while doing that work. | :00:22. | :00:28.
Jo Cox has been described as hard-working, a star | :00:29. | :00:31.
and someone who fought for a better world. | :00:32. | :00:35.
She was the MP for people in the area of Batley and Spen | :00:36. | :00:38.
Jo lived on a boat in London and, before becoming a politician, | :00:39. | :00:43.
she worked with refugees and for charities like Oxfam | :00:44. | :00:46.
She was a supporter of immigration - that's people coming here to live | :00:47. | :00:53.
Whilst we celebrate our diversity, the thing that surprises me time and | :00:54. | :01:07.
time again is that we are far more at United and have far more in | :01:08. | :01:10.
common than that which divides us. Yesterday, Jo died after being | :01:11. | :01:13.
attacked in the village of Birstall in West Yorkshire, | :01:14. | :01:15.
while out doing her job. It's left people across | :01:16. | :01:18.
the country in shock. Today our nation is rightly shocked | :01:19. | :01:28.
and I think it is a moment to stand back and think about some of the | :01:29. | :01:31.
things that are so important about our country. | :01:32. | :01:33.
shouted, "Britain First" or, "Put Britain First". | :01:34. | :01:38.
Britain First is also the name of a political party. | :01:39. | :01:40.
They've said in the past that they hate politicians | :01:41. | :01:42.
However, they've said the suspect was never a member and that | :01:43. | :01:47.
Britain First has no connection to what happened. | :01:48. | :01:49.
They've also said the attack was wrong. | :01:50. | :01:53.
We don't yet know why it happened, but some people are asking | :01:54. | :01:56.
whether hatred towards immigrants and politicians that support them | :01:57. | :01:59.
Police are still investigating the event, which has | :02:00. | :02:04.
It's important to remember that events like this are extremely rare. | :02:05. | :02:11.
And if you're ever feeling upset by the news, then head to Newsround | :02:12. | :02:14.
Among those remembering Jo today are pupils at a school in the area | :02:15. | :02:23.
But when I met Jo Cox, I thought some MPs are actually really lively | :02:24. | :02:33.
She was a really funny, caring person. | :02:34. | :02:37.
Going up and down the country taking everyone's ideas and just trying to | :02:38. | :02:40.
When she told us that she was an MP, it | :02:41. | :02:45.
She stood up for what she thought was right. | :02:46. | :02:49.
She made a big difference to our community. | :02:50. | :02:51.
Jo Cox liked to help loads of young people. | :02:52. | :02:54.
And she liked helping other people around the | :02:55. | :02:58.
All day many people have been leaving flowers | :02:59. | :03:03.
and messages in Birstall, where Jo had been working yesterday. | :03:04. | :03:05.
The BBC's Sophie Long sent Newsround this report | :03:06. | :03:07.
These are some of the flowers that people have brought | :03:08. | :03:15.
You can see this one here is from the staff and | :03:16. | :03:18.
pupils at a local primary school with pictures of when Jo Cox took | :03:19. | :03:22.
Some people here have been very, very upset and haven't | :03:23. | :03:27.
Others are asking why such a terrible thing happened to such a | :03:28. | :03:32.
She did a lot of work with children in particular refugee | :03:33. | :03:42.
Yes. She had only been a member of Parliament for one year. She had | :03:43. | :03:55.
spent her whole life sticking up some of the most vulnerable children | :03:56. | :04:00.
in the world. In the last year she had been pressing the Prime Minister | :04:01. | :04:04.
to help children in Syria who are stranded without their parents and | :04:05. | :04:07.
desperately need a home. It is because people like how that many of | :04:08. | :04:12.
those children are now being cared for. That's amazing. Many people | :04:13. | :04:18.
shocked. Many people have been phoning end. Why is it important | :04:19. | :04:22.
that people who do the work they year and Jo Cox do I protected from | :04:23. | :04:29.
violence like this? Because MPs are elected by the people in the team | :04:30. | :04:32.
unity is where we left and we speak on their behalf. It is important | :04:33. | :04:37.
that when we decide how we run the country that we heard. Should not | :04:38. | :04:42.
just be the people who shout the loudest or ability other people who | :04:43. | :04:47.
get the loudest voice. That is way Jo Cox was important, because she | :04:48. | :04:52.
was always honest and spoke up even when her opinion was unpopular. What | :04:53. | :04:57.
is it like to see all these tributes from all over the world? It shows | :04:58. | :05:03.
how great she was. She was fearless and spoke on behalf of people. | :05:04. | :05:07.
People were to her because of the way she went about her daily | :05:08. | :05:12.
business. She was respectful and honest. The best thing we could do | :05:13. | :05:16.
to honour her now is to make sure that we respect one another and men | :05:17. | :05:21.
we debate we do it in a way that looks after one another and cares | :05:22. | :05:24.
for everyone in the country. Thank you. | :05:25. | :05:24.
Newsround will be back on TV tomorrow morning at 8.55am | :05:25. | :05:30. |
