See you. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:02
Morning guys, it's Monday,
I'm Martin and first up, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
we have a big question for you -
who invented the selfie? | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
Whitney's been finding out. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
Watch this. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
The selfie. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
We all take them, some
of us more than others, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:30
but the big question is,
who invented the selfie and why? | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
Now, that's a really
good question, John. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
A really good big question,
so I've done some research and come | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
up with a few answers. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
Lots of people claim to have
invented the first selfie. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
Last year, celebrity Paris Hilton
claimed that this picture | 0:00:45 | 0:00:46
was the first selfie ever taken. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
Social media were not
happy about this - | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
they concluded that maybe
that was a bit crazy, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
and of course that she didn't. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
I can now reveal the first selfie
was taken by a man named... | 0:00:56 | 0:01:02
Robert Cornelius. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
The 30-year-old took it outside his
lamp shop in America in 1839, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
so that is who invented the selfie. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:14
But the word 'selfie' has
a different history. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
So let's fast-forward to 2002,
when the word 'selfie' was born. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
A guy in Australia took a photo
of his lip that he had cut | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
and wrote, "Sorry about the focus,
it was a selfie." | 0:01:24 | 0:01:31
In Australia, I don't know
if you know, but they tend to add | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
'ies' at the end of their sentences,
ie barbies, sunnies, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
so it's not that surprising, is it? | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
By 2012, the word 'selfie' became
widespread, and by 2013 it entered | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
the dictionary and became the word
of the year. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
It even has its own day in June,
National Selfie Day. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
So remember that the next time
you're taking a selfie. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:56
If you're a big fan of sports
like skiing, snowboarding, | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
and ice hockey then you'll probably
be very excited that | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
there's now just 17 days
until the Winter Olympics begins | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
in South Korea. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
And I'm very excited to have two
of Team GB's skeleton racers | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
in the studio with me! | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
Laura Deas and reigning Olympic
champion Lizzy Yarnold are both | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
heading to PyeongChang in less
than two weeks. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
Let's see them both in action... | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
Come on Lizzie, last corner! | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
Lizzy Yarnold is
the Olympic champion! | 0:02:24 | 0:02:32
One woman stood between the Germans
and a wash of the podium, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
Great Britain's Laura Deas,
a great first start. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:50
And a delighted Laura Deas... | 0:02:53 | 0:03:01
We are hoping to see that excitement
in the Olympic Games! Let's talk | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
about the skeleton, what is it? It
is an unusual name for a sport, can | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
you describe what it is? The
skeleton | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
you describe what it is? The
skeleton sled is what we lie on to | 0:03:15 | 0:03:16
go down the track. It weighs about
30 kilos so it is really heavy and | 0:03:16 | 0:03:21
it's about this tour from the
ground, so quite big, and it is | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
called the skeleton because inside
there is a basic steel structure, a | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
bar at the top and two down the
side. The top one is like your | 0:03:29 | 0:03:35
shoulders, the bottom one is like
your spine, it is like a human | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
skeleton. That makes sense! You both
did different sports before | 0:03:39 | 0:03:44
skeleton, Lizzie I think you did
heptathlon and Laura you were | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
equestrian? How do you go from that
to being on the ice? It seems like a | 0:03:48 | 0:03:55
strange transition but we both came
through a UK Sport scheme called | 0:03:55 | 0:04:01
Goals For Gold which was designed to
find athletes who might be suitable | 0:04:01 | 0:04:07
for Olympic sports and skeleton was
one of them so we went through | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
selection trials not necessarily
knowing what we might be best suited | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
for, then we were asked to try
skeleton and went from there, | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
really. This is your first Olympics,
how are you feeling? Exciting, | 0:04:17 | 0:04:23
because I have been giving the sport
than nine years now and this has | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
always been my goal, so to finally
be on the plane to Pyeongchang next | 0:04:27 | 0:04:31
week is really exciting. Lizzie, you
must be pretty excited, current | 0:04:31 | 0:04:36
Olympic champion, how feeling? It is
crazy because if you told | 0:04:36 | 0:04:42
ten-year-old me that I would be
selected for my second Winter | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
Olympic Games, I would not have
believed you! So I can't wait to go | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
out there, defend my title and did
my absolute best and enjoyed the | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
Winter Olympics. Thank you very much
for coming in, and good luck. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
That's it from us - we'll be back
in just over half-an-hour. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:06 |
