Morning, guys! | 0:00:06 | 0:00:07
It's Monday, I'm Martin
and this is Newsround. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
Loads coming up today... | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
We catch up with two of Team GB'S
Winter Olympics hopefuls. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
The tiger cubs showing their faces
for the first time. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
And, Minnie Mouse gets
a long-overdue award. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:27
First, if you're a big fan of sports
like skiing, snowboarding, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
and ice hockey then you'll probably
be very excited that | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
there's now just 17 days
until the Winter Olympics begins | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
in South Korea. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:48
And this morning we've
caught up with two of Team | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
GB's skeleton racers. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
But what is skeleton? | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
Well, reigning Olympic
champion Lizzy Yarnold | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
and first-timer Laura Deas,
who are both heading | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
to the Games, explained. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
The skeleton sled is what we lie
on to go down the track. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
It weighs about 30 kilos
so it's really heavy, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
and it's about this tall
from the ground, so it's quite big. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
And it's called the skeleton
because inside there | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
is a basic steel structure,
a bar at the top and two | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
bars down the side. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
The top one's like your shoulders,
the sides ones are like your spine, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
then there's a bar at the bottom,
like a human skeleton. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
You both did different
sports before skeleton - | 0:01:22 | 0:01:27
Lizzie, I think you did heptathlon
and, Laura, you were equestrian? | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
How do you go from that
to being on the ice? | 0:01:30 | 0:01:38
We both came through a UK Sport
scheme called Girls For Gold | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
in 2009, which was designed to find
athletes who might be suitable | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
for several different Olympic sports
and skeleton was one of them, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
so we both went through selection
trials not necessarily knowing | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
what we might be best suited for,
then we were asked to try skeleton | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
and went from there, really. | 0:01:56 | 0:02:01
Laura, this is your first Olympics,
how are you feeling? | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
It's really exciting,
because I've been doing this sport | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
for nine years now and this has
always been my goal, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
so to finally be on the plane
to Pyeongchang next week | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
is really exciting. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
Lizzie, how are you feeling? | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
It's crazy, because if you told
ten-year-old me that I would be | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
selected for my second
Winter Olympic Games, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
I would not have believed you! | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
So I can't wait to go out there,
defend my title and do my absolute | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
best, and enjoy the Winter Olympics. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:30
Thank you for coming in, good luck! | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
And if you want to know more
about what's happening | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
at the Winter Olympics,
head to Newsround online, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
where you can find out everything
you need to know about the Games, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
the mascots, and plenty of info
about the differernt | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
sports involved. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
Say hello to five
Manchurian tiger cubs. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:53
These cuties were born
in a tiger shelter in China. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
It's very rare for five cubs
to be born all together, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
and they need to be keept close
to mum so she can feed them | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
all the milk they need
to grow strong and healthy. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
Next up, we have a big
question for you - | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
who invented the selfie? | 0:03:06 | 0:03:07
Whitney's been finding out. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:08
Watch this. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
The selfie. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
We all take them, some
of us more than others, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
but the big question is,
who invented the selfie and why? | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
Now, that's a really
good question, John. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
A really good big question,
so I've done some research and come | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
up with a few answers. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
Lots of people claim to have
invented the first selfie. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
Last year, celebrity Paris Hilton
claimed that this picture | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
was the first selfie ever taken. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
Social media were not
happy about this - | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
they concluded that maybe
that was a bit crazy, | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
and of course that she didn't. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
I can now reveal the first selfie
was taken by a man named... | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
Robert Cornelius. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
The 30-year-old took it outside his
lamp shop in America in 1839, | 0:03:48 | 0:03:54
so that is who invented the selfie. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
But the word 'selfie' has
a different history. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
So let's fast-forward to 2002,
when the word 'selfie' was born. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:05
A guy in Australia took a photo
of his lip that he had cut | 0:04:05 | 0:04:09
and wrote, "Sorry about the focus,
it was a selfie." | 0:04:09 | 0:04:17
In Australia, I'm not sure
if you know, but they tend to add | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
'ies' at the end of their sentences,
ie barbies, sunnies, | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
so it's not that surprising, is it? | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
By 2012, the word 'selfie' became
widespread, and by 2013 it entered | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
the dictionary and became the word
of the year. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:31
It even has its own day in June,
National Selfie Day. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
So remember that the next time
you're taking a selfie. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:42
A bit of tennis now,
and Kyle Edmund is getting ready | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
for his first ever Grand Slam
quarter-final after he beat | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
Italy's Andreas Seppi
at the Australian Open this weekend. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:53
The British number two got
off to a slow start. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
Edmund trailed by a set
but recovered well, finding his form | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
and smashing 25 aces
to win the match. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
He will face Grigor Dimitrov
of Bulgaria tonight. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:06
And did you know that Kyle was just
ten years old when he first | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
started playing tennis? | 0:05:10 | 0:05:11
For more facts about the British
tennis star, head on over | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13
to Newsround online. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:23
And there's big news for one
of Disney's most famous stars. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:25
Minnie Mouse is finally
due to receive a star | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:29
She's been in entertainment for 90
years, and many fans have | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
said her star should have been
there ages ago. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
Mickey got his star 40 years
ago and Donald Duck, | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
Tinker Bell, Winnie the Pooh,
Snow White and Kermit | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
the Frog have one. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:44
Miss Piggy still doesn't
have one, though. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:45
That's all your news
from me for this morning. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
Ricky's back at 4.20pm. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:48
Have a great day at school,
and don't forget to head | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
to Newsround online to check out
all the rest of the | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
day's big stories! | 0:05:54 | 0:06:02 |
