Hi, guys. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:10
Ricky here, with your
Monday Newsround. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
Loads coming up today. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:12
We catch up with two of Team GB'S
Winter Olympics hopefuls. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
And... | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
We all love taking them, but who
actually invented the selfie? | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
We'll be finding out. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:26
First up, if you're a big fan
of sports like skiing, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
snowboarding, and ice skating,
then you'll probably be very excited | 0:00:35 | 0:00:40
that there's now just 17 days
until the Winter Olympics begins | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
in South Korea. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
Team GB has been announced this
morning, and we caught up with two | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
of our skeleton racers -
Olympic champion Lizzy Yarnold | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
and first-timer Laura Deas. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
They told us how much they're
looking forward to the Games. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:59
I've been doing this sport | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
for nine years now and this has
always been my goal, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
so to finally be on the plane
to Pyeongchang next week | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
is really exciting. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
It's crazy, because if you told
ten-year-old me that I would be | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
selected for my second
Winter Olympic Games, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
I would not have believed you! | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
So, I can't wait to go out there,
defend my title and do my absolute | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
best, and enjoy the Winter Olympics. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
Good luck to them. Next, we have a
big question for you. Who invented | 0:01:22 | 0:01:32
the selfie? | 0:01:32 | 0:01:38
The selfie. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:39
We all take them, some
of us more than others, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
but the big question is,
who invented the selfie and why? | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
Now, that's a really
good question, John. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:45
A really good big question,
so I've done some research and come | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
up with a few answers. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
Lots of people claim to have
invented the first selfie. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
Last year, celebrity Paris Hilton
claimed that this picture | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
was the first selfie ever taken. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:55
Social media were not
happy about this - | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
they concluded that maybe
that was a bit crazy, | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
and of course, that she didn't. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
I can now reveal the first selfie
was taken by a man named... | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
Robert Cornelius. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:12
The 30 year old took it outside his
lamp shop in America in 1839, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
so that is who invented the selfie. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
But the word 'selfie' has
a different history. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
So let's fast-forward to 2002,
when the word 'selfie' was born. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:25
A guy in Australia took a photo
of his lip that he had cut | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
and wrote, "Sorry about the focus,
it was a selfie." | 0:02:28 | 0:02:35
In Australia, I'm not sure
if you know, but they tend to add | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
'ies' at the end of their sentences,
ie barbies, sunnies, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
so it's not that surprising, is it? | 0:02:40 | 0:02:46
By 2012, the word 'selfie' became
widespread, and by 2013, it entered | 0:02:46 | 0:02:52
the dictionary and became
the Word of the Year. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
It even has its own day in June,
National Selfie Day. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
So remember that the next time
you're taking a selfie. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:02
And remember, if you want
to have a chance of gettingyour | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
question answered, you can head
to Newsround online and send it in! | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
Netball now, and England
face Australia tonight | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
in the Quad Series. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:10
It's after a busy weekend
for the teams from all | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
of the UK's home nations. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:14
Hayley's been taking a look. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:22
On the weekend, Northern Ireland,
Wales and Scotland played | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
their qualifying matches for next
year's Netball World Cup, | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
that will take place in Liverpool. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
After some gruelling
matches, Northern Ireland | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
secured their place,
as well as Scotland. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
But unfortunately, Wales
didn't manage to qualify. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
England didn't have to worry,
as they automatically have a place, | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
as the host nation. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:51
But they still had a busy weekend
playing in the Quad Series, | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
a tournament with four of the best
teams in the world - | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
England, Australia,
New Zealand and South Africa. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
And they started with a win. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:05
It was a nail-biting
finish to this game, | 0:04:05 | 0:04:12
where England beat New Zealand
in extra time 64-57. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
The crowd's been really noisy,
getting behind their national team. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
I can't really believe what's
just happened, in a way, | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
because of the extra time. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
It's a small snippet
into what 2019's going to be like. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
Obviously, the World Cup
launched this week for us, | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
and that build-up into Liverpool. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
I think... | 0:04:28 | 0:04:29
I just can't wait for
that moment, you know. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:34
Coming and playing
in a home Test Series, | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
with the crowd behind you,
makes such a difference. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
England take on Australia here next,
who are world number ones, | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
but a win here now tonight has given
a real boost to the national team. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:46
It is loud there! | 0:04:46 | 0:04:47
That's it from me. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
Martin's back tomorrow, at 7:40. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:50
Don't forget to head
online for all the rest | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
of the day's stories. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
Bye! | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58 |
