Hi, I'm Naz, live in London on what's been a historic day. | :00:00. | :00:07.
After more than 40 years, the UK has decided to leave | :00:08. | :00:11.
I'm here with a special Newsround live from outside | :00:12. | :00:27.
It's been a huge day with the news that the UK has voted to leave | :00:28. | :00:33.
the club of 28 countries known as the European Union, or EU. | :00:34. | :00:42.
Just take a look kindly. There are hundreds of people still here. Lots | :00:43. | :00:50.
of media here from newspapers, TV, radio, lots of people here all | :00:51. | :00:54.
trying to get news of that special moment and that decision was | :00:55. | :00:59.
announced. I was also there and this is what happened. | :01:00. | :01:00.
This means that the UK has voted to leave the European Union. | :01:01. | :01:03.
This was the moment we knew that Britain | :01:04. | :01:08.
In the end, more adults voted to leave than to stay in | :01:09. | :01:15.
which left people who wanted to leave very happy. | :01:16. | :01:18.
David Cameron has just stepped outside. | :01:19. | :01:22.
It's been confirmed that the UK will leave the European Union. | :01:23. | :01:29.
The British people have voted to leave the European Union | :01:30. | :01:32.
I will do everything I can as Prime Minister | :01:33. | :01:38.
to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months. | :01:39. | :01:42.
But I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain | :01:43. | :01:46.
that steers our country to its next destination. | :01:47. | :01:49.
As you've just heard, David Cameron has told us | :01:50. | :01:53.
he is stepping down as Prime Minister, | :01:54. | :01:56.
but it won't be for another three months | :01:57. | :01:58.
so the Conservative Party has time to choose a new leader. | :01:59. | :02:03.
The decision to leave could have a huge effect | :02:04. | :02:06.
Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to stay in. | :02:07. | :02:14.
Now politicians in Scotland are talking about whether there | :02:15. | :02:16.
should be a new vote on independence from the UK. | :02:17. | :02:20.
I can therefore confirm today that in order | :02:21. | :02:23.
to protect that position, we will begin to prepare for | :02:24. | :02:27.
legislation that would be required to enable a new independence | :02:28. | :02:30.
referendum to take place if and when Parliament so decides. | :02:31. | :02:35.
There is a huge amount to work out before the UK can | :02:36. | :02:38.
Many people who wanted to stay are worried by the result | :02:39. | :02:43.
of this vote, as so many things are uncertain. | :02:44. | :02:46.
But for many of those who wanted to leave, | :02:47. | :02:49.
this is a day to celebrate taking back control. | :02:50. | :02:53.
Well, joining me now is Theo Leggett. | :02:54. | :02:55.
It's his job to explain politics for people like you | :02:56. | :02:58.
Theo, were you surprised by the result of the vote? | :02:59. | :03:09.
I have to admit, it was. I was a baby 40 years ago when we first | :03:10. | :03:16.
joined the European Union. I never seriously thought that we would | :03:17. | :03:20.
leave. I believe the opinion polls which up until yesterday said the | :03:21. | :03:24.
vote would be for domain. What about the prime ministers stepping down? | :03:25. | :03:29.
We heard from him just a minute ago. Was that uprising for you? Not so | :03:30. | :03:33.
surprising. Once he had lost a referendum that he had called, it | :03:34. | :03:37.
was a vote against his position and he had led the campaign, he couldn't | :03:38. | :03:42.
carry on. He had to hand over to somebody else who could carry on the | :03:43. | :03:45.
negotiations with 27 other countries to at where we go from here. The | :03:46. | :03:53.
decision means a lot of uncertainty. We have had lots of questions from | :03:54. | :03:56.
people back at home and we apologise that we cannot and saw all of them. | :03:57. | :04:01.
Jonathan wants to know why the younger generation don't get to | :04:02. | :04:05.
vote. Blame the politicians, Jonathan! They make up the rules. | :04:06. | :04:10.
There is a question that slightly younger people should be given the | :04:11. | :04:13.
vote so perhaps young people should stand up and say they want that | :04:14. | :04:19.
boat. Jacob who is ten from West Yorkshire asks, I'm going on holiday | :04:20. | :04:22.
to Spain in a couple of weeks. Will this affect the number of euros I | :04:23. | :04:28.
can get? I'm afraid it will because -year-olds are going to become more | :04:29. | :04:31.
expensive for us but don't worry, you will still be able to enjoy your | :04:32. | :04:37.
holiday. -- euros are going to become more expensive. We have some | :04:38. | :04:45.
more questions here. We will be the first country TV is the EU so how | :04:46. | :04:49.
can we guarantee that we will be financially stable? You said it | :04:50. | :04:55.
yourself. Nobody really knows what is going to happen is other are no | :04:56. | :04:59.
guarantees. Although we voted to leave the European Union, it will | :05:00. | :05:02.
take us a couple of years before we actually do so we can work out how | :05:03. | :05:06.
it will all function in that time so don't panic just yet. Who will be | :05:07. | :05:13.
funding our projects and staff because I know that Crossrail was | :05:14. | :05:20.
heavily funded by the EU? That kind of funding probably wants happen any | :05:21. | :05:25.
more. That comes from Europe and pays for broad temperatures but | :05:26. | :05:28.
don't forget, by leaving Europe we stop paying into the European budget | :05:29. | :05:32.
as well so in theory the British Government should be able to pay for | :05:33. | :05:37.
that kind of thing. My name is Ryan and I am curious to know how this | :05:38. | :05:44.
referendum will change the future of our students and our education? You | :05:45. | :05:49.
are 13 and you told me you plan to go to university. As part of the | :05:50. | :05:53.
European Union you have the right to live and work and study in the | :05:54. | :05:56.
European Union. It is possible but not certain that in the future you | :05:57. | :06:02.
might not have that right. Will have two wait-and-see. We have time for | :06:03. | :06:08.
one more. Who will take David Cameron's Place? At the moment it | :06:09. | :06:13.
looks most likely to be Boris Johnson because he has been leading | :06:14. | :06:17.
the league campaign. He is one of the more charismatic politicians in | :06:18. | :06:20.
the Government but other candidates could put their hands up as well. | :06:21. | :06:26.
Thank you, feel and you for joining us. | :06:27. | :06:27.
Well, Hayley's been to a school in Salford to find out | :06:28. | :06:29.
The adults of the UK have now voted that they want to leave the EU. | :06:30. | :06:34.
Well, I feel happy but at the same time I feel angry | :06:35. | :06:38.
because we pay ?350 million a month to the European Union. | :06:39. | :06:41.
Now that we've left the EU, we could spend it on health care. | :06:42. | :06:44.
We could be using the other countries for teamwork | :06:45. | :06:46.
and helping each other whereas now that we're on our own, | :06:47. | :06:50.
so we could lose a lot of things because of that. | :06:51. | :06:54.
How do you feel about us leaving the EU? | :06:55. | :06:57.
Most people who voted to leave were, like, over 65, and they won't have | :06:58. | :07:02.
to deal with the consequences in future generations. | :07:03. | :07:05.
I'm glad that we left the EU because the cost of | :07:06. | :07:08.
staying there we could spend on re-funding the NHS | :07:09. | :07:11.
I don't feel like I got enough information about it. | :07:12. | :07:15.
I'm a bit worried about the future for our generation | :07:16. | :07:18.
because we don't know whether it's going to change | :07:19. | :07:20.
I think that a lot of jobs will move away from the UK | :07:21. | :07:28.
so I won't get as good a job when I'm older | :07:29. | :07:30.
That's all we've got time for here at Westminster. | :07:31. | :07:40.
If you didn't have your question answered here, head online | :07:41. | :07:45.
where we have tried to answer as many as possible. | :07:46. | :07:53.
Thank you for watching and join us at the weekends where we will have | :07:54. | :07:58.
more of the news. Thank you for watching, buy buy. | :07:59. | :08:01. |
